Let me know if I've posted this one before, and if so I'll kill it.

There is a nice, long road in a particular part of the UK which was once in the "open air". One day, the Department of Transport decided that, for the safety of all concerned, the road should go through a tunnel instead. So now one particular section the road, unchanged from its original course, goes through an artificial hill.

Explain, using "yes/no" questions, why they went to all that expense.

To waste one second of one's life is a betrayal of one's self.
I wonder what's on television...?

Was the hill man made first and then the tunnel built?

Was the hill man made first and then the tunnel built? Yes - a hill was built by men then a tunnel driven through it

Was there a landslide over that section of the road?

Netflix needs to stop asking if I'm still watching and start asking if I've switched the laundry over yet

Was there a rifle range nearby?

Added: I love these too. I hope it's okay for me to submit another question before the previous one is answered.

One slight correction having looked up the history book - it was not so much a hill as a sort of massive shed covering the road, open at both ends...

Okay, this doesn't really involve a river but near me there is a stretch of road going up into the mountains. At one point it was covered in a shed to prevent the snow from closing the road. Could it be that?

Were hooks from anglers fly-fishing in the river cast into traffic?

Pandora is nearest so far, but it's not landslides they're worried about - they're contained by a seperate steel mesh barrier. With a large river running beside the road, what might you see if you looked up? think

Here in Puget Sound we have very large cranes for loading and unloading cargo from ships. Is it to protect the drivers from crane accidents?

Does the road go under a bridge where various discharge from above threatens traffic below?

Like passenger trains on an overhead trestle, dumping (while movin') all kinds of stuff to the ground below.

Or, maybe too many people were offing themselves, from some sorta favorite overpass spot, inconveniencing traffic below with their suicide bids?
