Hi tamberine,
Be sure to have read the page of the journal which mentions pushing the moose's eye -- otherwise the game doesn't register you being aware of needing to do this and the hotspot won't become active.
The secret compartment that then opens up is in one of the walls, as I recall, not the moose itself.
