good morning Marian, i have not played Dreamfall in years so i forget. using the PC, how do i move the characters around and what's with this focus field? robert.
From MaG's walkthrough, here is how you move around in the game, as well as how other controls work:
To move, use the directional arrows or the WASD keys. Press-hold the shift key to walk. Press-hold ctrl key to sneak. Inventory is accessed by the tab key. Press the m key for the mobile that has the e-mail, the dialogues and notes to self. For the focus band, the q key is for the next focus and e key is the previous focus. The pause key pauses the game. l key is for light attack, k key is for heavy attack and the space bar is for blocking. Right click to open the game focus band to check out things in a location. The character cannot move during this time. Right click again to toggle it off.

As I recall, the keys can also be reassigned to suit the player. My own play was using the up arrow to move forward, and the mouse to pan around.
The focus field is used for people/objects at a distance. It isn't used all that frequently in the game.

hi, i am trying to give Olivia the notebook so she can de-crypt it. before that, in MaGtRo's w/t. it says a message is received that Jana has cancelled future appointments. i didn't receive that message. could that be why i can't give Olivia the notebook? robert.

hi Marian, i am at the back of Victory Hotel. i have the lockpick from the Chinese merchant, looked at the padlock, can't speak to Liv on the mobile because i don't have the 'gears' icon, can't get the lockpick although i can see it in my inventory. how can i open the padlock? robert.

If you already have the lockpick then you won't need to call Liv again.
Are you standing close enough to the padlock in order to use the lockpick on it?

hi Mag, when i try to enter the Victory Hotel by using the axe on the boards, the axe is not active. the mobile IS! i sneaked past the dog and got the axe from the shed and checked the inventory for an axe which i have. by the time i climbed down the ladder, the axe was gone??? i can't break the boards with a MOBILE. what happened to the axe? i can't figure it out. robert.

Ah - you said that the "axe is not active" when you try to use it on the board. So you do have it inventory at that time.
Look close at the boards and see if you can then use the axe.

Mag, i didn't explain the situation too well. no, i do not have it in inventory, at least not in 'usable' inventory. it is to the right of the mobile - 'usable' inventory with the 'gears' icon. robert.

If it is in inventory, can you not scroll to place it at center of the inventory selection to make it active and also be sure that you are close (zoomed in) to the board.

I downloaded the manual of Dreamfall.
Open inventory with the TAB button or by clicking the mouse wheel.
Cycle through items in your inventory with the A and D keys or the mouse wheel.
Press W or click the left mouse button to intiate interaction with the highlighted inventory item.
From there, you get several choices on what to do with the selected item,: examine, use/give or combine.

I can't be more specific than what is in the walkthrough.
Maybe do the step by step there line by line and you might combine the 2 successfully.

Mag, when i just click on the rag after the selected axe handle, nothing happens. i don't get a torch therefore i MUST be doing something wrong. can you identify what please? robert.

Let's go through this step by step:
- Go through the open doorway and see that it is dark in the hallway.
- Go back to the lit workshop.
- Pick up the axe handle from the floor.
- Take some filthy rags from the table.
Now to combine them:
- In inventory, select the axe handle.
- Click on the wrench icon. See a + sign.
- Using the left or right arrows on the computer, scroll to place the rag at center of the inventory selection.
- Click on the rag to combine it with the axe handle to make a torch.
Check off each step after you do it.

Hi robert,
The movement of the guy in shorts might be random -- continue on with the game and see what happens. As long as you do everything else that's necessary, you should be ok. Check against MaG's walkthrough if you think you might have missed something.

hi Rushes, i am at the Victory Hotel at the window with the radiator beneath. i have the filthy towel and dirty sheets in inventory but i can't combine them to make a makeshift rope. do i have to fight Vinnie and defeat him as a prerequisite and where should i fight him at this stage or am i doing something else wrong? robert.

Hi robert,
No, you don't have to fight Vinnie. If you're able to elude him, all the better.
Did you check room 201 and find that the door was locked?
Then, at the window with the radiator, did you look through the window and see room 201 with the red sheet on the bed?
Now Zoe knows she needs to make a rope to be able to get into room 201.

hi Rushes, i may have broached this before but is it necessary to hide from the man in shorts at the end of the bathroom at the Victory Hotel to complete the rest of the game? i have read and reread the walkthrough for days and can't get the best strategy to get the man in shorts into the bathroom so i can hide from him. any tips? robert.

It isn't necessary. MaG's walkthrough says If the man arrives in the bathroom, meaning that his movement may be random. It's also certainly possible to move around upstairs and hide from the other guy (Vinnie) without ever having to fight him -- I played through it once myself this way. You just need to be absolutely sure that you've covered everything that needs to be done.
Have you managed to make the makeshift rope yet?

Robert,
I presume it's the same way you do any combining in the game.
- In inventory, select the dirty sheet(or filthy towel).
- Click on the wrench icon. See a + sign.
- Using the left or right arrows on the computer, scroll to place the filthy towel (or dirty sheet) at center of the inventory selection.
- Click on the item at center of inventory selection to combine it with the other item to make a makeshift rope.

Replay the clue - the waterwheel again.
Then go back and do the puzzle. Be sure that you do the correct sequence. Then wait. The cutscene takes time to show up.
If you make a mistake - go away again and then come back and redo the puzzle.

hi Mag, 'the cutscene takes time to show up'. i take this to mean open the door in the wall. how long does this take - 10 seconds, 1 minute etc. i tried waiting approx. 30 seconds without success but is this long enough? also, if you click 4 times on each glyph the door doesn't open but each glyph blinks and glows. is this a factor in opening the wall? and, do i have to go back to a saved game to re-hear the tune? robert.

It is indeed left (a high sound/tone), middle (a medium sound/tone), left (a high sound/tone), and then right (a low sound/tone).

hi Marian, i don't know what to say except i have played and re-played the waterwheel/glyphs sequence umpteen times and hanging in there to complete Dreamfall as i think it's an excellent game. do you think there's something in the Troll sequence i may have missed? i managed to get past the Trolls and got the glowing egg ok. i can't think of anything else as i have followed Mag's w/t meticulously so the weakest area would be somewhere between the egg and the waterwheel. your opinion would be appreciated, robert.

Hi Robert, I'm not sure what step you might be missing. If you got past the trolls and got the glowing egg, that all sounds well and good. Have you done all of this?
Go forward to the end of the ledge and see a giant waterwheel. Climb down the steps and look at the waterwheel. There's a platform up there. Climb the steps close to the waterwheel. Go forward and see a broken ladder.
See a machine on the right platform. Turn the wheel and see sparks come out from top. Saved game here. Open inventory and place the glowing egg on top of the machine. Now, turn the wheel again and hear musical sound. Remember this sound. See that the powered machine opens up the water flow. The water wheel turns. Stand to left side of the machine and look up at the egg. Take the glowing egg off the machine.
Go down the steps and use the water wheel. See Zoë hold on to one of the waterwheel board to reach the top platform. Go forward and jump across the broken walkway. Go forward and climb the ladder.
If you are still stuck after this, let's wait and see if someone else can figure out how to get you moving on with the game again.

hi Marian, i have gone back, collected 2 pebbles and thrown each one to distract those trolls as per MaGtRo's walkthrough then redid the waterwheel and the glyphs with no success. do you have a Youtube video handy i could look at to see where i'm going wrong please? robert.

Hi Robert, did you retrieve the glowing egg after using it to activate the wheel? I'm pretty sure the egg is needed for the glyphs to appear.

The egg should allow you to see the glyphs. Have you tried using the saved game that MaG sent you?

Hi Robert, you would first need to find out where the Dreamfall saves are located on your hard drive - have you done that already? I have no idea where they are located on Windows 7; you would need to first start a search for folders called something like Dreamfall or Funcom. After you find where the saved games are, you can just copy and paste the saved game into the saved-game folder, then load up the game and choose that save when you load.
If you need more help, you could try posting over in our Glitches forum and someone there may be able to give you better instructions.

Hi Robert, if you have done all the steps that were described previously in this thread about this problem, and also have the glowing egg with you when you arrive at the glyphs, unfortunately I don't know why the glyphs aren't flashing. I wish I could offer better help.
Maybe another player will be able to think of something else for you to try that will allow you to move ahead in the game.

Robert,
Replay from the part when you placed the glowing egg in the machine.
Then turn the machine and hear the tones.
That might be where you missed something.
Then take that glowing egg again after turning on the machine.

hi Mag, i tried out the glowing egg as you suggested without success so going back pre-trolls is not an option at this stage but i WAS able to get the glyphs to light up and flash. any comments please robert.

There should be a cutscene here of a door opening on the wall. I can't remember if it is left or right of the glyphs.
Be sure that you have the glowing egg in inventory.

Why not try to do both and see which ones work.
I always do an "eye" to know what that item is and if I want to take - use the hand.

You can't bypass it because - you have to go through that hole to the next part of the game.
That is why - you will not be able to do so until you finish this part.
You will not be able to come back here anymore after going through that hole.
So if you missed doing something here - you can't continue.

hi Mag, thank heavens! my wife and daughter, less the grandchildren, they were too taken up with Santa's gifts, visited me for Christmas here at the nursing home and it didn't take my daughter long to get the hole in the wall to open up. she used a combination of UHS, getting the glyphs to flash, and your walkthrough to open the hole. i asked how she managed it but didn't know how but i am glad she did. now i am back in business. HOORAY! robert.

After you read the mail from Olivia saying that she has updated your mobile and where the contact is located, you have to see which of the next path-action you have to do.
It depends if you:
- If only one ticket is taken,
- Or If Riko has a ticket and you don't have the gum.
Then check the walkthrough on what to do then.

Robert,
Below is the part that mentions opening the staff door using the mobile on the scanner of the staff door.
I presume that once you did the actions below - that gear icon is for you to use the mobile on the scanner of the staff door.
Enter the Staff door:
Use the red hand scanner right of the staff door. The guard comes over. Zoë would need Olivia's help. Zoë mails Olivia. Check the mail and see Olivia's response. The contact is at 4th floor, section 2. Olivia updated the mobile to open this staff door.
If only one ticket is taken:
Go to the First BunnyBot display where Hiro the boy is looking at. Stand behind the boy to talk to Hiro. Give Hiro the gum and then try to talk to him again.
Touch the BunnyBot exhibit. Again be reprimanded by the guard.
Talk to Hiro again. He agrees to distract the guard. Hiro enters the exhibit and BunnyBot hops down and out of the exhibit.
While the guard is distracted, use the mobile on the red hand scanner of the staff door.
If Riko has a ticket and you don't have the gum:
Riko talks to Hiro and they argue. To prove that Hiro is not a crybaby nor afraid. He enters the display.
Timed symbol matching puzzle: This is the same random timed matching puzzle as the other previous puzzle. Find the match of the lit symbol at bottom to one of the symbols on the top. Do this to all symbols. Go through the now open Staff door.

- Click on the wrench icon. See a + sign.
- Using the left or right arrows on the computer, scroll to place the torn ticket (or sticker) at center of the inventory selection.
- Click on the item at center of inventory selection to combine it with the other item to make a makeshift museum ticket.

Be sure that you are at the correct panel.
Then highlight the mobile in inventory.
Click on the "use" icon and click it on the panel.

It should be the open hand icon. You might see this icon after you highlight the item and then click on gear icon.

See what happens when you go behind the altar.
Also try the ctrl key - see if that works.
It might also be an automatic response if you're at the right place.

That's because you're not hidden. He sees you, panics and runs away. Be sure that you're hidden behind the altar so he'll come in and go to the second door.

hi Rushes, i have hidden behind the altar and the troll does something with the three??? symbols, opens the door then disappears through the door. according to the W/T, it has something to do with the focus field i think but i'm not sure what. what should i do now to get through that door? robert.

Here's some advice I found online that might be of help:
While continuing to hide, activate the Focus Field function to zero in on the locked door as the troll enters the secret code. After the troll enters and the door closes, leave the safety of your altar hiding place and re-enter the secret code to unlock the door. Go inside and take the staircase that leads down to find the next key item in your quest. Many gamers experience difficulty opening the altar door due to failing to use the Focus Field function or to activating it too soon. If you do it properly, you should view a cut scene showing the troll's every movement. If you don't get the cut scene, you know you didn't time things correctly. Simply remain hidden behind the altar and wait for another troll to come along and open the door.

hi Marian, i have successfully gotten past the altar and entered the secret code to open the door downstairs. i have progressed in Alchera to the point where i would like to get back to this point, past the unbeatable big beastie troll, and start this level afresh without going back to the absolute beginning but i have saved so often, the program won't let me go back to an earlier time. there must be some limit to the times you save. is there any way round this? robert.

Hi Robert, if I am understanding you correctly and you want to restore to an earlier point in your game but all of your saved games are past that point, then unfortunately you won't be able to go back that far in the game. Some games do indeed have a limited number of save slots while other games offer far more.
I'm glad to hear you got past the altar and have been making nice progress with the game.

hi Marian, i have restarted Dreamfall again and am at Vinny at the Victory Hotel. how do i 'try out' something from the walkthrough WITHOUT actually using up a save slot? they are precious in this game. robert.

Hi Robert, the main thing is to not save your game again until you know you are safe for a while and will not be encountering any dangers near or at where you save your game; looking over the walkthrough should be helpful in that regard. Good luck.

You can also overwrite any used saved game slot that you think you don't need anymore.
Also you can copy paste those used saved games in another folder (save them) - so that you can use them later - if you want to.
Then you can overwrite those slots at your leisure.
