The Raven chapter 1

Hello,

I am stuck at the puzzle for opening the inspector's cabin door with the wire. I have tried and tried and can't seem to make it open. Even looked at a walk through screen shot. I can get the tumblers pushed up, but apparently not pushed enough. Any tips? I'm going crazy!

The silver tubes on top should be pushed up so that the gold tubes below them are all even enough to allow the rod to pass through.
So push the silver tubes by adjusting the wire at left to the required height.

Thank you MaG. With your answer I had to reexamine what I was attempting, which was WRONG and never going to get me anywhere. Thought I had to push the gold bars to the top. Ugh. So now I was able to do it, thanks to you!
