The Samaritan Paradox - 04/19/14 10:05 PM

Okay, Richard, here I be.
Question: have you fiddled with the horse yet?

Gil.

Re: The Samaritan Paradox - 04/19/14 10:10 PM

Yes I have I put it on the pedestal and turned it but which way do I turn it.
Richard

Re: The Samaritan Paradox - 04/19/14 10:11 PM

Try putting the compass on the horse.

Gil.

Re: The Samaritan Paradox - 04/19/14 10:16 PM

Will do Gil never thought of that. Which way should the horse be north, south east or west. Thanks

Re: The Samaritan Paradox - 04/19/14 10:21 PM

Richard,

Click to reveal..
It all depends on whether or not you've talked to Signe, Jonatan's wife. Put the record from the room behind the fireplace on the phonograph to wake her up. Talk to her completely. Then show her the horse. She'll repeat a poem about the horse that gives you directions on what to do.

Now, you can help me if I'm still hanging around in #3 once you get there. grin

Gil.
Posted By: kjos

Re: The Samaritan Paradox - 04/19/14 10:34 PM

Gil there are four directions in the poem will try them all.
Richard

Re: The Samaritan Paradox - 04/19/14 10:38 PM

Do it as if you're opening a safe, Richard, first one direction then another.

Gil.

Re: The Samaritan Paradox - 04/19/14 11:52 PM

Gil I don't know how you did it. I've been trying so hard but no luck. Would you send me a step by step on how you did it. Sure would appreciate it. Thanks
Richard

Re: The Samaritan Paradox - 04/20/14 12:23 AM

Hang on, Richard, I have an earlier save so I'll go back and see just what I did.
Be back soon!

Okay, here's what you do.
Click to reveal..
Take the horse off the pedestal and the mechanism will reset.
Put it on again.
Turn the horse Clockwise to the South.
Turn it Counterclockwise to the East.
Turn it Clockwise to the West.
Turn it Counterclockwise to the North.
Try to pick it up and Ord will say he doesn't have to mess with it anymore.

Take it from there or do this if you want to.

Click to reveal..
Look above the pedestal.
You'll see now that a painting used to hang there.
Go ask Veronika about it.
Go telephone Sara.
She'll tell you where the missing painting is.

Now you're in just the right place to get stuck with me. grin

Hey, Richard,

I'm right behind you but not likely to play any more tonight.
I've got

the ring, the flask, the shield and dagger and a rope with a lump of resin from the tree stuck to it so far.

That lighthouse isn't being cooperative. lol
Anyway, don't run off and leave me at the bottom of this cliff!

Re: The Samaritan Paradox - 04/20/14 10:57 AM

Gil did you get the moss and polish the shield? Did you look at the clouds on the light house. I've got the other things. How do I add a spoiler to the tex.
Looking for a bowl. I light a fire in the light house. Fighting a duel with the dragon.
Richard

Re: The Samaritan Paradox - 04/20/14 03:07 PM

Whahoo!
Where did you find a dragon?

Click to reveal..
Yep, I polished the shield and promptly lost it by using it on the lighthouse to start that fire. So, I get the idea I have to produce three puffs of smoke, right? To get that dragon?

To add a spoiler, you have to be on the Reply or Quote screen. The thing that looks like a megaphone up at the top will insert spoiler tags if you click on it once you highlight the text you want to hide.

If you forget to use Reply or Quote, you can always hit Switch to Full Reply Screen after you've finished typing, the way I did here. grin Man, you'd think I would remember that.

You have to put the polished shield on the fence to start the fire. We have to get to the top of the cliff to find the third well.

I haven't figured out how to get to the top of the cliff.
Richard
Posted By: traveler

Re: The Samaritan Paradox - 04/20/14 03:25 PM

Hey, there you are!
I started the fire.
Now my problem is producing smoke, I think.

I haven't worked my brain this hard since GK1.
When it gets to be too much I go and clobber some orcs in Divine Divinity before I come back and think about it again. crazy
Love those orcs; this is my 2 zillionth playthrough of that. grin (Slight exaggeration but not by much.)

Congratulations on hiding that text!

So...mortal feet can't climb that cliff.
Maybe that means you have to ride the dragon you found?

Have you tried anything yet?
Click to reveal..
I decided to pour water from Freja's flask into the bowl since the dragon might be able to tell if it was water from one of the wells but now what?
I'm waiting but night doesn't seem to want to fall.

Gil.

Re: The Samaritan Paradox - 04/20/14 03:55 PM

I still can't defeat the dragon. I given two bowls of water but nothing worked. Something to do with the third well on top of the cliff. I think we have to get up there.

Re: The Samaritan Paradox - 04/20/14 04:14 PM

Oh, boy.
IMO, the only way we're going to get to the top of the cliff is to ride the dragon
Click to reveal..
The trouble is, she has to be poisoned unless we're okay with being eaten.
She will carry us up to her nest if we're dead!
There must be some way to make her think Freja is dead and carry her home before eating her for lunch.
My first thought was to start over and drink from the flask in Freja's pocket immediately after being given the dragon's bowl of poisoned water since we know the water in the flask is pure.
But there's no time to do it!

Gotta tax my brain again.

Aargh.

WOW! This game is really "taking off", fellow Boomers. I'm playing the DEMO, but I'm afraid that I'm going to need a walkthrough. If a wt becomes available, I will definitely purchase the FULL version. Meanwhile I'm still "trudging along" at the beginning. HAPPY GAMING!

Re: The Samaritan Paradox - 04/20/14 09:14 PM

I noticed that the DEMO does NOT allow loading of games once you have "quit" it. I'll just have to start over again, "Life is full of obstacles." LOL
Sandy

WELL, I 'bit the bullet" and purchased the game from GOG. When I played the DEMO, I was able somehow to get TO the "code" puzzle (at the start of the game), but I don't remember how I did it, so I'm "stuck" here. How do you get to that CODE INTERFACE in order to do the puzzle? I saved the part just after solving that puzzle in the DEMO, but those saves are NOT compatible with the FULL version (You get an error message when trying to LOAD those saves that I made in the DEMO.) Sure could use a WT right about now.

Gil I found this in the web (sounds like a bug maybe. You have to drink the 2nd well water right before you exchange, then she takes you away, she drinks the clear water, then she goes and drinks the 3rd well water, and it kills her
Richard

Re: The Samaritan Paradox - 04/21/14 03:04 PM

It worked.
Click to reveal..
To be clear, you empty your flask into the bowl.
Fill the flask from the second well.
Drink from the flask right before giving the bowl to the dragon.
There's those few seconds accounted for.

I see why it killed Semita but I'm still not sure about...well, maybe I'll figure out how Freja survives later.
Edit: Dumb me.
Click to reveal..
Freja survived because she drank poisoned water from the 2nd well and the dragon gave her water from the 3rd, which was higher up.

Re: The Samaritan Paradox - 04/22/14 02:57 AM

Hey, Richard,

Long day at work, just getting back to it.
Okay, I'm sure the chess puzzle has to do with something Ord mentioned before about placing 8 Queens so none of them threaten one another.
Oh, boy, and me an ignoramus when it comes to chess - but can't a Queen move in any direction?
Maybe it's one place at a time.
I'll have to look it up.
Maybe they can be jammed up against one another so they can't move; i.e., 8 queens straight across.
Haven't tried it yet.
Maybe the King can be moved if you get the queens placed correctly.
Could the chest key be under him?

What you see through the telescope must relate to the poem.
The ancient hero is probably Hercules.
You see images of the constellations derived from the labors of Hercules, I think, in the Diary.
"All but one have gone asunder."
Well, I suppose that means only one is complete and will offer the clue to the numbers on the chest's lock.
That image on the lock looks like a harpy to me.

"Wandering from sea to sea" may have to do with what you see when you click on Chapter One
Click to reveal..
and it repeats Freja's
ride across the sky and you see the young dragon go back to the cliff.

I hope you crack it because I doubt I'll have an answer soon! lol

Half a sec later: Ord saw that problem about the queens when he was taking a random book down from the shelf in the library.

Re: The Samaritan Paradox - 04/22/14 11:59 AM

I do think I know what type of solution is required: the calender describes the 7 world wonders, the 4 horsemen, the 12 labors of hercules and the 7 seas, although it's still pretty vague. I thought i should rotate the cane from 7 to 4 to 12 to 7, each time waiting for a click, but this doesn't work. Also the numbers could be off: only 1 wonder is left these days, but should I use 6 or 1 here? Also there are way more than 7 seas, but only 5 oceans. The exact number is critical :( Also, what exactly is the way to rotate the cane? But: fun puzzle!!

Unless I misunderstood you, you probably move from number to number, skipping the ones you don't want, by not waiting for the click.
I think you're right about 7 being the first number. It would be easy enough to switch that to 1 if we had the last number but that clue is really cryptic.
Missing no note?
Losing no key?

Could that be 'heart' instead of 'coffin'?

'Bed' and 'candle' look right, depending on which candle you choose.
I suppose the one that's no longer lit, though the burning candle is on a holder with a handle for carrying.

Could the fourth one be 'key'?

Re: The Samaritan Paradox - 04/24/14 08:07 PM

have you got your conffesion off Stig if so you should be able to get through that door
Posted By: traveler

Re: The Samaritan Paradox - 04/24/14 09:36 PM

Mad,
You just have to keep trying. As soon as the priest comes out and heads for the bell panel, zip out from behind the bookcase door and plug in the fan.
(I assume you have the cord pulled out of the plug-in next to the door, not the extension.)
Then head through the door.

You think this is a pain?
Wait until you run into the plate & bird! Lol!

I think dragon is talking about a different door inside the priest's quarters but I may be wrong since I'm not all that familiar with church terms.
There is another door next to the confession booth that has a red/green button panel beside it.
All you have to do to get that door to open is change the light to green.
Click to reveal..
When you do, Stig will come in and confess.

Re: The Samaritan Paradox - 04/25/14 02:40 AM

So. I go from my save where the fan is NOT plugged in.
[Which I must have tried 20 times already !!]
But at least I know I AM trying to do the right thing ....

The only "red/green light" door I've seen is in the Church Hall (next door, where Stig is sitting) and not in the Church itself but I haven't been able to change the light from red to green on it OR talk to Stig.
[All I've been able to do with Stig so far is give him a book - after removing the bookmark from it.]

Thanks to both of you grin and if I do ever get past this sticking point I'm sure I'll back here again in no time requesting more help from you !! lol

Right. When the priest starts off to the right, you want to be as close as you can get to the door without going through it, right next to the plug-in. Then quickly plug the fan in.
When I tried it again, going directly to the plug-in didn't work...which may just be something that only happens to me since I had lots of trouble just getting Ord to stand behind the bookcase door. grin

If you right click on that red/green light, Ord will say something about it's only working from one side.
In this case, the inside.
The priest pushes the button to let someone in to hear his confession.
So, you have to get into his quarters before you can open that door.
Click to reveal..
Stig isn't going to talk to you.
You have to pretend to be the priest.

Sat on it, there they were, so I used one in the jukebox (actually on the rocker) and put another in the fountain outside.
I now have one and no CLUE what to do with it.

Oh, and I found a hole above the old sack I stuffed in next to the compartment where the fan goes.
The hole evidently needs to be filled with something, I presume a smelly something.

Re: The Samaritan Paradox - 04/25/14 01:22 PM

I think you got out of the bunker, dragon.
What weapon?
What is a "skip"?
Dumb me, that was a typo, should have been "ship", right?
The ship is certainly big enough so you must be using the crane.
We're not there yet!

Richard, you have to use those signs to get the numbers on the numberpad.
Read Chapter 2 again.

I went back to the bar and the rocker is gone so I can use the jukebox.
Put the coin in and was given a selection of songs.
There's one called Rescue Me and another called Lock It Away.
I've listened to those two but don't have time to think about it or listen to more of them.
A clue in one of those maybe?

Richard,

Click to reveal..
Go to the crane controls if you haven't already and lift the weapon part out of the crate.
If you can't seem to get it hooked and out, stop, right click on the hook, and Ord will tell you how many clicks to make right or left, up or down.
When you get it placed after that, run it into the girder.

That's where the weapon part has to be hidden.

I think I counted about 28 times. Before you start moving the machine part save. Now you can start from there. Line it up where you think it will fall off when it collides with the other side. When you put the tape on the left arrow jump in the box where you took the part out of. Hopes this help.

Re: The Samaritan Paradox - 04/26/14 11:21 PM

Mad,

Click to reveal..
Position the hook about where you think it should be then left click on the floor or someplace outside the arrow box.
Then right click on the Hook.
Ord will tell you just how many clicks you should make to left or right and up or down.

When you get that weapons part into position, ram it into the girder. You want it to fall off so you can hide in the crate. When it falls, click on the left side of the crate the part was in.

When you get the coins from the sofa, use one on the rocker and choose the song.
It doesn't matter what you choose, what matters is that the man reading a book at one of the tables gets up and goes because of the noise and leaves his book behind.

That's it.

Thanks so much Gil. I didn't do any of that. I used a coin on the rocker and he played the jukebox and I read the book. Now I have to figure what to do next.Richard

Richard,

I can't remember if he leaves while you're there.
If he doesn't, just Exit the room and go back in again.

I really thought Herbert the fig would be the Trevor the cockroach of this game.
But no.
Darn. grin

Now you go back to the grocery store, Richard.
Click on the owner and fill in his crossword.
You only have to fill in that one clue.

Look at it this way, we've been such a help MaG can just whiz through her walkthrough. devil

I went back and played that part again, Richard.
Here's the way I did it.
Click to reveal..
Ord looks at the photo but can't make out the faces.
Click on the chandelier and Ord comments on it.
He goes to the radiator when you click on it.
He talks to the maitre d' and asks about the photos/photographer.
He asks if the maitre d' has a magnifying glass.
He says goodnight and walks toward the exit after the maitre d' opens the window.
The draft makes a prism fall from the chandelier.
Use the prism on the photo.

Where is this in the game? I didn't do any of this, but still finished the game....WEIRD.

Re: The Samaritan Paradox - 04/27/14 03:39 AM

You had to ask me.
Do you know what a short attention span I have?
Ah...well, the way I got there this time (I won't swear I got there this way before) was to do the bit in the boathouse then talk to the shop owner who sent me to the waitress who told me where the photographer's work was being shown.

How's that for a run-on sentence? grin

Are you sure you didn't do this, JonVox?
I can't figure out how you finished the game if you didn't.
That photo is key to the solution.

Re: The Samaritan Paradox - 04/27/14 03:48 AM

Hmmm...Definitely didn't do it.
Click to reveal..
I went to the cabin and Veronika showed up and confessed and that was it. It makes much more sense now. I thought it very odd that I had the conversation option of "I know it was you in the boat with Jonatan." I was like...wait...what? How did I know that?? LOL Bizarre that the game let me skip that whole part of the game.

Re: The Samaritan Paradox - 04/27/14 03:50 AM

The game knew who you were.
You got preferential treatment having been a part of it.

grin

Petter Ljungqvist dove into some pretty heavy themes for an adventure game.
I'll admit the ending brought me up short and left a bad taste in my mouth despite the "happy" ending, but then I thought there's never been any dearth of games about war and weapons manufacturers or religious cults; it's only the very sensitive subject he touched on that was so shocking.
We cringe away from it and wonder how on earth anyone could do that.
Sorta brave of him to make a game about it.

Ha! Think so? Wish it would've given me preferential treatment in a couple other spots in the game...

I just found a video playthrough, so I see what I missed....yeah, not sure how it let me finish the game. Seems like a crucial step.

Re: The Samaritan Paradox - 04/27/14 05:58 AM

Out of the frying pan into the fire !!

Click to reveal..
After finally getting myself on the ship and finally dealing with the door of the hold, I am now trapped in a timed section as I try to get off the ship smashpc

So I'm having to ask for help again, please, as timed sequences in Adventure games are not and never have been my thing thumbsdown
Posted By: traveler

Re: The Samaritan Paradox - 04/27/14 06:01 AM

It's a pretty mild timed sequence, Mad.
Take it from someone who doesn't like them any more than you do.
Click to reveal..
As soon as Stig starts to leave, pick up the tape from inventory and slap it on the open door.

Oh, wait...you're out of the hold.
Okay, then where are you? In the hallway?
Click to reveal..
If you're there, go upstairs.
If you go down you'll be caught.
You'll hear voices coming from the bridge.
Hide against the wall so the door conceals you when it opens.
Go to the unlocked cabin which is the black strip on the right.
In the cabin, click on the trenchcoat and thoroughly examine the suitcase.
Look at the briefcase.
Look at the only other exit from the cabin.
That's your way out.

It was very...interesting. Definitely wasn't expecting the story to take that turn. It was a bit strange and a little dark, but a good twist. I'm just glad I didn't have to act out any flashback scenes as Jonatan with Sara. wink

Richard,

Click to reveal..
After you turn up the heat on the radiator and say good-bye, you wait until the maitre d' opens the window.
Then click on the exit.
Ord makes a comment about opening the door.
He doesn't go out but sees the prism fall.
If that doesn't help, try watching this playthrough on YouTube.
Start at 6:21.

I hope everyone had fun with it...even if it did get a little difficult at times, and very weird at others. Ha! It definitely helped having all these brains working together to solve some of these puzzles. I never would have passed some of those areas without everyone's help.

Keep an eye out for another one I'm doing some voice work on right now called "Quest For Infamy" (There, that's my shameless plug for the game...bwahahaaaa)

Ha! I always enjoy taking about voices. As of right now I'm voicing a cowboy like character named Swart, a guy named Marlon, who's got a tough guy Brooklyn accent...."fughedaboudit" And then am old drunk named Japsworth.

That's awesome that you're a backer! Thank you very much! It's looking like a super cool project.

Hi JonVox smile

I'm a "Quest for Infamy" backer too - and it's shaping up to be a good game from the look of things. Especially loving the graphics style thumbsup

[I still replay some of those old Quest for Glory games.]

And the "sounds" as well ??
I'll have to make sure to check out your voice acting when I get my hands on the game lol

Just about to start my next session of Paradox and hoping not to require assistance - but if there's a timed element, I'm sure I will taz

EDIT :
Never got to play - unexpected caller !! Have to try again later laugh

Cheers.

Re: The Samaritan Paradox - 04/28/14 12:32 AM

Tell Blackthorne that I'll give him an extra nickel if he adds the voice actors' names to the credits.
I hate it when I really like a voice actor and he or she doesn't even get a mention, especially when they can be so important to the game.

One of my favorite games is the RPG Divine Divinity and can I find out who voiced the male Warrior or John the Dragon Rider or the wizard Zandalor who are incredibly good?
Ha.
Although the game is not completely voiced, they and some others add so much to it that I cannot figure out why they aren't named somewhere.
They can't possibly be ashamed or dismissive of their work in a PC game, can they?
Rolf Saxon, Tim Curry and Mark Hamill, to name a few, certainly aren't.

Anyway, twist his arm or bribe the guy and get your name in the credits! grin
You never know when a game will turn out to be a Classic in its genre.

Gil.

Btw, you might want to tell QFI that Richard is right.
Trying to download the demo you get an error message.
Not good for anyone who might be interested in seeing what the game is like with the notion of buying it.

Re: The Samaritan Paradox - 04/28/14 05:54 PM

Finished the game !! yes

And quite enjoyed it .... Apart from the timed sections ....

[Hate that type of stuff in Adventure games - where failure means going over and over the same bits. It takes away from the continuity of the game as far as I'm concerned thumbsdown

However, I would certainly try another by this developer smile

Hi everyone, I'm the author of this game and responsible for all the damage done to your heads and the nearest walls.

(And hi JonVox btw :))

Thanks a lot for giving this a serious chance despite its difficulty (and timed events, cough cough). It's brave to tackle a game like this without a walkthrough, but someone has to do it first!

I feel both excited and a bit guilty when I realize how many man hours that have been spent here.

Re: The Samaritan Paradox - 04/29/14 03:21 PM

Do you feel guilty enough to give us another game, Petter?

I'm with dragonuk44 and hungry for another one to tax our brains and give us so much pleasure.
Hey, we wouldn't be gamers if we didn't grump and gripe but we loved it, and playing it more or less together was great fun, too.
(Having a star of the game here to play it with us was just icing on the cake. grin)

That dragon puzzle was a real head-cracker yet, looking back, I'm ashamed of myself that I didn't solve it right away because it seems so obvious now.
I guess that's the way of good puzzles.
IMO, the clues were very fair and I never felt cheated.
Okay, I was a little grouchy about the lack of Use Tape On... in the weapon part puzzle but if I'd had any sense there, as Richard did.... sad
Oh, one thing: red and green make brown.
But those are really just quibbles.

Thank you!
I had a wonderful time with The Samaritan Paradox.

Gil.

Somewhat later: I had a bright idea and headed over to the AGS forum where I was sure your game would have been discussed.
It was very interesting to read your comments on how you ended the game and ThreeOhFour made a good point about something that had been rambling around in my mind.
So I'm still thinking about The Samaritan Paradox and what transpired.
I believe that's a compliment.

Gil,I wonder if there will be another game like Samaritan Paradox.I know it was a hard one but looking back and with all the help it wasn't really all that hard. I really enjoyed it. I never did keep track of the time I spent on the game. Must have been about a week on and off. Just hopefully there will be Samaritan Paradox 2. Never could have finished it without all the help we got from everybody. At time I was ready to give up then came another help.

I hope so, Richard, though we all know it takes time and a lot of effort to make one of these games.
Ord and Sara's story seems to be wrapped up but whether Petter thinks differently and continues it or strikes out on a new path and a new story, I'm ready to play another game when he makes it.

And it was fun playing it with you guys.
I'm ready to do it again.
