Replaying Nancy Drew The Final Scene - am stuck

I'm trying to open the trap door on the stage. I've followed the walkthrough correctly, the cages open, etc., but when I go to the stage, the cages are gone. I've tried this several times with the same results. What am I doing wrong?
I looked at the stage manual again. Where's the lock switch?

The walkthrough states that step 8 is "Press the lock (the toggle switch on the right."

That's what I've been doing and it just turns off the system and raises the cages....soooo, I didn't do the last step - and it worked!
