Inmates

I'm at the end of the game, and I have to get to the second floor in the library to the bookcase. I cannot find a way to get upstairs. I've watched the video several times, but still can't get up there. When I approach the stairs, Jonathan says "that looks neat" and "seems to be useful"; but I cannot climb the stairs. I'm diverted away each time I try to face the stairs to climb them. Anyone out there have any directions for me to get to that bookcase and finish the game?

There looks to be a full walkthrough on YouTube, so if all else fails, you could try taking a look at that.

Unfortunately, I've watched more than one YouTube video but still can't quite figure it out. Hope someone out there has a clue for me.
