Road to India - 03/15/18 04:17 AM

Hi wave

I'm in Chapter 4. I have talked to the boy, the taxi driver, and the astrologer so there is nothing left to say to any of them. I've picked up the necklace and business card. In my inventory I have a stick, a crate, a wedge of cheese, and a broken bottle. Down the alley there are 3 hot spots where I mention rats and pigeons. There is a passed out drunk holding my wallet and there is a hot spot around his head.

I know I need my wallet and I'm quite sure I have to do something with a rat. Do I have everything I need or am I missing something? I'm not having luck with either task and I often miss items so, just asking.

Thanks.

When you get to the spot where you hear the pigeons cooing, look all around you.

Ooh, OK. I haven't yet noticed any pigeons even though he mentions them. I'll see what happens.

Thanks much Marian!

Well, I never really heard the pigeons but did see them. Still missed the item the first time around. But have moved on. Nothing with the rat, at least for now. I'm outside the house. Will pick it up again Saturday.

This is my second time playing. I liked it the first time but I think I'm liking it better this time around.

Yea, speaking of rats, maybe I should have caught that rat in the prior chapter. I was just looking at the walkthrough to see if I missed something because in some prior crashes it seemed I did something wrong or out of order or missed something. The walkthrough says you don't need to catch the rat, but maybe it would help to have it.

No idea, but maybe something to investigate.

Re: Road to India - 03/19/18 03:25 AM

Marian - I posted in glitches but was still having problems so I did replay that prior section and caught the rat, though I don't know if that played a role or not. The other thing I did different was in the house. There was one bedroom I had gone in originally and I picked something up off the nightstand, not sure what - maybe matches or something. This time I did NOT go in that room, I only opened up the room with the woman in it and I didn't have any problem with the game crashing. It apparently does have something to do with certain actions you take or don't take. Weird but I don't care. I am happy to be able to continue the game. I really like it.

Thanks for all that information. I really liked the game too. I am happy to hear that you can continue!

Finished the game. At the end, after the credits it crashed again so I checked the walkthrough to make sure I saw everything and I did.

The reason I couldn't catch the rat the first time around is because I missed a hot spot, and therefore missed the rope.

I think I'll go back in and use the rat at the end (Easter Egg shown in walkthrough). Then, off to bed!

I think some of these older games can have glitches if you don't do things in the order the developer things you should or you do things the developer doesn't expect you will whistle

I used to get occasional crashes in Sierra games - with an error message that said what I had done was "unexpected" !! lol

Re: Road to India - 03/19/18 02:22 PM

I remember those "unexpected" error messages, Mad. laugh

I am glad you were able to finish the game, oldbroad. smile

Re: Road to India - 03/19/18 08:17 PM

Did the developers learn to "expect" the "unexpected" at some point?

Hi Chuck, I believe oldbroad played this game on her Windows XP computer - the only way to get it running on systems newer than that would be to run it in an emulator, I believe. The game was released in the early 2000s, as I recall.

Marian is right. I played it in XP from my disc.

Where did you download it from and what operating system are you using? Fireflower shows that the game runs in Windows 7 but I inquired about that one time and the answer didn't sound as positive as I would have liked so I didn't buy it.

The original game was published in 2001 and according to the game box was made for Windows 95/98/ME/2000. It played on early XP, though tweaks may be necessary for XP with SP2 or SP3 installed. The original version of the game on CD is not likely to work "out of the box" on newer versions of Windows, though it might work inside a Virtual Machine with Windows 95 or 98 inside.

There is no such thing as "31-bit".
If a 32-bit game doesn't run on 64-bit Windows, there's some problem other than the game being 32-bit. 16-bit code won't run on 64-bit Windows, but a game from 2001 is not likely to have 16-bit code.

The "updated" version of Road to India is a mobile port with cut scenes, puzzles, and locations removed. It was a short game to begin with and the gutted mobile port is not worth bothering with.

I don't know if what you downloaded is the complete version of the game or the gutted mobile port.

If you found the original version and want to try running it in a Virtual Machine, there are instructions for using Virtual PC 2007 at the Metzomagic website.
http://www.metzomagic.com/showArticle.php?fileName=/int/help/VirtualPC2007FAQ.html

Unfortunately the Metzomagic site seems to be having server problems at the moment, so check it later if you get a server error.

In the meantime, you might have better luck with the ***Web Archive version***
