LIghthouse:dark being: can't free amanda - 05/24/18 12:05 AM

Yes, it's an OLD game, which I recently picked up. I am completely stuck in this obtusely difficult but somehow charming game, and that is after pouring through YOUTUBE walkthroughs as well as the walkthroughs from this wonderful site. Here's the situation:
I am at the point where I'm supposed to rescue amanda from smashing the rocks. I can get no power to the right gauge (silver pipe wheel) in order to activate the magnet behind me to lift a rock. I cant get any power to it at all. I went back to the steamroom near lava minipod and turned the supposedly correct wheels. I tried different wheel turning combos. No matter what I do : no power to the right guage on the silver pipe after I turn its wheel.
I hadnt played this game in over 20 years...I never finished it originally, and now I remember why.
Can aNybody help me with my vague question? I've done a search here on GB and online and no one seems to have had a smiliar problem. I KNow I did something wrong with the 3 billion switches and levers you have to pull in this game. Argh!
THanks

Hopefully someone who has played this game will be able to help you out.

I see that UHS Hints also covers this game; it might be a good resource. You can find it here.

Did you look at the walkthrough of Marinus_Louis?
You can find a English walkthrough for Lighthouse: Dark being with a lot of screenshots.

In fact there are 2 walkthroughs, one of them is for a differnt route through the game.

Take a look at www.pcgameswalkthroughs.nl, yes it is a Dutch website but there is a English section and there you find these 2 walkthroughs for Lighthouse: dark being.

Succes with the game.

Thank you, Lion. I was just going to recommend your walkthrough, but you beat me to it!

Re: LIghthouse:dark being: can't free amanda - 05/25/18 12:20 AM

Thanks for the walkthroughs, everyone. WIsh I would have seen M_Louis' WT first....it's perfect.
Here's the problem. In many of the WTs it says, in this steam room area, do NOT touch anything other than the wheels for steam valves 3,4 and 7. It seems I can't UNDO what I've already done (putzing around with the other valves, as well). I have no earlier saves except for WAY back in the game. ANd no matter WHAT I do, I cannot get power to the silver pipe gauge so that the magnet moves around to lift up the rock. SO:
Before I shelve this for ANOTEHR 20 years, does anyone have a saved game where AManda (the baby) is saved so I can go on from there? THe game itself is driving me mad, much as it probably did 20 years ago. Without a saved game, I'm stuck without the frustration of replaying a huge swath of this frustrating game.THank you.
I cannot find ANy saved games online for this old game.

I hope someone here will have a saved game for you!

Re: LIghthouse:dark being: can't free amanda - 05/25/18 12:33 AM

And one more thing: I downloaded a place where I found saved gamed games for LHTDB, and one SVD GM that actually is labeled "amanda is saved"...but I guess because that was a saved game from the long-ago DOS version, when I called it up in my present game (purchased recently from a gentleman selling dos-converted games)...my game crashed. SO I"m probably out of luck with saved games. Guess it's back on the shelf (figuratively). I will never finish this game.

Let's wait and see. GOG recently released Lighthouse, so there may well be more people playing it.

Re: LIghthouse:dark being: can't free amanda - 05/25/18 02:38 AM

Note that GOG's version of Lighthouse probably uses ScummVM -- and saves made using ScummVM are specific to using ScummVM with the game, and ScummVM saves are not compatible with the original game exe -- or even with different versions of ScummVM.

Be aware that nobody is "converting" games from DOS.
Some people are selling discs with automated installers that install DOSBox with the game inside -- the same installers you can find for free at sierrahelp.com
http://www.sierrahelp.com/Patches-Updates/NewSierraInstallers.html
The only difference is that you have to provide the original game CD for the installers at sierrahelp, though after installation you can put away the CD.

Now that ScummVM also supports Lighthouse, some people will be selling a ScummVM installer with the game inside.

That is also what GOG does, and some of the games they originally sold with a DOSBox installer they now sell with a ScummVM installer.

Check out your game folder and see if you can tell whether your game is using ScummVM or whether it's using DOSBox. If it's using DOSBox, you may find older saves that are compatible with your game. If it's using ScummVM, you'd need much more recent saves that were made by someone playing the game in ScummVM, and saves from the GOG version may be compatible.

If this helps any, I have been playing this game following Louis's great walkthrogh step by step, and referring to all of the images as well.

Re: LIghthouse:dark being: can't free amanda - 05/25/18 10:05 AM

Louis did play the game and he has used the GOG version with ScummVM.
On his website you can download his savegames and one of them is just what you are loooking for.
So you have to use ScummVM or you buy the GOG version about 5.6 euro's then you can use the saves of Louis

Succes and have fun

Lion...I will try that;thanks. It;'s worth the $6 just to finish the game after 20 years!

Re: LIghthouse:dark being: can't free amanda - 05/28/18 08:05 PM

OK. I purchased the game from GOG. Plays great. I downloaded all the saved games from :
http://www.nicouzouf.com/en/?id=lighthousethedarkbeing
After starting the game and beginning a new LH game, and creating my first game save,I dragged all the saved games 41-51, after d-loading them from this site as suggested, into my GOG LH game. The new game's first and only save I made shows up, but NONE of these saved games show up in my GOG lighthouse saved games folder (computer/GOG Galaxy/Games/Lighthouse/Saves).
NONE of the saved games are shown as being in my game. I made sure I tried them as they were labeled from the website (LITESG.001, etc). Then I changed the name of these saves to reflect as saved games appear in the GOG game: lighthouse.001, etc.
I played the GOG game with "syncing cloud saves', then I went offline so it just played the game and didn't sync cloud saves. No matter what I do, none of these saves show up in my game...only a save where I play the game and save it myself.
I hate to think my stubborness in wanting to finish this after 20 years made me waste $6, because from the replies above, I thought using these saves would allow me to finish the game after buying the GOG version.
Any replies? Louis: I had thought above you had mentioned the saves (see web addy above) worked with the GOG game, which is using SCUMMVM...
THanks
ROb...frustrated in NY; thinking I just wasted $6.

Lion was saying that the saved games from Louis's website should work, as he played the GOG game with ScummVM. You can find his website here:

Lighthouse saved games

Those should work for you.

Re: LIghthouse:dark being: can't free amanda - 05/28/18 08:38 PM

I don't know which saved games you have downloaded but the saved games of Louis can be downloaded from his website: www.pcgameswalkthroughs.nl
Go to the English section and click on Lighthouse the dark being.

At the top of the walkthrough you see: My Lighthouse Saved games.
Download these files, unzip them and place them in the save file folder of Lighthouse, then start the game.

You wrote in your reply that you downloaded from another site and we don't know if these saves works with ScummV.

There was another thread about the walkthrough of Lighthouse the dark being in march 2018.
Some Gameboomers have played the game and have used the saved games of Louis.

The saved games of Louis are made with the GOG version of the game and so you have to use the proper saved games.

go to the website of Louis and click on his name in blue, then you can send an email to Louis and ask him for help.

Thank you Marian.
While I was making my reply you solved it already.
It took me a little bit longer but I was checking if the saved games still could be downloaded from the website of Louis.

I hope end good all good.

Re: LIghthouse:dark being: can't free amanda - 05/28/18 08:56 PM

Indeed...thanks everyone. YEs,the latest saved games I was linked to here work just FINE. I just need to be able to figure out how to create the portal to get Krick and the baby back to the house (the latest save didnt have that). Time to head to the walkthrough so I can finally finish this game!
THanks again,Lion.!

Re: LIghthouse:dark being: can't free amanda - 05/28/18 09:19 PM

I still have to play the game, I have started the game but played just a little bit.
To busy with other games and making walkthroughs, also translating walkthroughs.

Louis and I are now translating the walkthroughs of Myst IV and Myst V.
Today I have started with the walkthrough of Lake Ridden.

When they are available I will post it here.

Finally finished! Thanks you again!
I was thinking of purchasing Lake Ridden. I was wondering if it was a good game. I've read online the environments are consistently dark (not my favorite graphical environments; mostly visual dark scenery in games tends to give me headaches)

Re: LIghthouse:dark being: can't free amanda - 05/30/18 08:10 PM

Thank you for your offer of help, samuel. He found the saved game that he needed, so all is well.

We may get more questions about Lighthouse in the future, though.

He purchased the game from GOG here. It's a digital download that runs through the ScummVm engine and it runs very well - no CDs needed.
