simon 3d getting past the sheriff

I have been trying to get past this bloke for hours & am ready to kick simon in the head, does anyone have any tips on how to get past him or a saved game immediately afterwards??? Please help or simon gets it

You can only get past him by walking or crawling very carefully <img border="0" title="" alt="[Cool]" src="cool.gif" />

I crawled till I made it as far as the filing cabinet - and then I walked (as near to the wall as I could) till I got to the cupboard
