Hitchcock arcade sequence

I am in chapter two trying to make it accross the scaffolding. I climb the ladder, then my guy goes on autopilot and walks over to a button hits it and then we're back down the stairs again without me getting in control to move. What am I missing here? When should I be able to move him ?
