Yeah, you're right. I had no idea why that rock was so important to Jane, or anyone else. I know the game gives hints about it (meteorite or something) -- but I don't remember an explanation about the value of that rock. LOL, it must have been important -- because that box was set to trap anyone who tried to take it.
BTW... after I posted about the "non-timed" timed ending, I remembered that there was -- briefly -- a timed puzzle in the ending; and I did get caught and died, at first. As the ending sequence begins, Jane and Nancy are near each other; and Jane reaches for the rock. If you (Nancy) don't quickly 'click out' to move away from Jane... you get trapped with her inside the box; and both of you
do die.
I guess the writers thought it was okay for Jane to die with Nancy -- but not without her.
