Myst 5 - Taghira

Myst 5 - Taghira - 09/27/05 01:18 AM

This may be the third time I've posted the same topic. I can't seem to figure how to do it. Anyway, here goes (again) I'm in Taghira. Drew the image of heat. Bahro picks it up. I run to the base of the heat pipes with the Blue, and then the orange buttons. But can't figure how to move the switches. Noting works. Just a transparent hand. What am I doing wrong? Also, how do you erase a slate in order to re-draw a symbol? Thank you.

Re: Myst 5 - Taghira - 09/27/05 01:35 AM

To erase the slate, click on the image located in the lower left side of the slate that has two diagonal lines going thru the shape of the slate.

If the three switches at either the red or the blue pipe terminals don't rise up when the steam is activated by the Bahro, then you need to be sure that you've moved all of the switches outside each of the buildings the pipes go to. Once you've done this, then activate the steam effect, the switches at the red and blue pipe hubs will rise up and you can move them. Hint: be sure to look at the water pool as you move the pipe hub switches!

Re: Myst 5 - Taghira - 09/27/05 01:39 AM

I'll add to that. These switches, when in the raised position, don't work like you might expect. I had the best luck by putting my cursor on the bottom of the switches (not the long extended arm, but the round bottom side) then if you want the switch to go right, drag it right (you might think the opposite since you are grabbing the other side of the switch). It works great.

Let us know how you make out.

Re: Myst 5 - Taghira - 09/27/05 01:54 AM

How do I make th switches raise? Does the slate need to be blank before I draw the heat symbol? If it does, how do I erase? I had to draw the heat symbol beside the ankh sign. Thanks for the quick reply. I'm still scratching my head.

Re: Myst 5 - Taghira - 09/27/05 04:08 AM

I presume you solved it!

To make the switches raise, do the HEAT symbol, which should be in a memory location at the bottom of your slate.

Got the switches-saw the light- went back to bubble to pick up slate again. Dropped it by the lake a second time. Saw the Bahro pick up the slate again. Saw the light. But where is the path across the lake. I know you gave a hint to be sure and look at water pool while moving the switches, but I didn't get the time to do that. Does looking at the water pool reveal the path across the lake. Maybe ai'm too old for this game, but I'm really trying. The trouble is: I'm out of my mind. Please leave a message! Thanks so much. Re: Myst 5 - Taghira - 09/27/05 03:53 PM

Della --- yes, the slate has to be blank to write any other symbol on it. Click on the erase symbol in the lower left hand area of the slate to erase. Once you've created a symbol that the Bahro can use, you don't have to redraw it again. It appears in the lower left side if it a symbol they use to manipulate their world. It appears on the right hand side if it is symbol on other pedestals. Just click on the symbol to use and it is redrawn on the slate for you.

As you set the switches at the two pipe terminals, steam comes up on different pipes in the water pool. As the steam appears, life forms appear on the pipes (just as Esher mentioned about "life living under the ice"). When you set the pipe terminal switches correctly, both the red and blue ones, you have created a path across the pool. You have to experiment with the pipe switches to get it right (or you can look at Bert Jamin's WT under his post in this forum for the exact settings).

I was that thrilled at crossing the lake, I forgort to get my carer to copy the symbol down. Has anybody got a description of it? Wheelie Gwenda

I finally found the path and got across the lake. Just had to work a little harder. Thanks for your help. Now I'm like some of the others , trying to figure out the shapes to draw. Thamks for the hint about going to the lake to see the path while moving the switches. Thanks dadguy and Bruce Fielder!!!!

Re: Myst 5 - Taghira - 09/27/05 07:49 PM

You're most welcome Della. Re the Keep pedestal's image, it may be hard to see particularly as the Keep island will move from you as Esher said. You must make the Bahro take you there via the slate.
Hint: look closely at the tomb stones and how they are stacked on one another. Good luck!

Myst V Tahgira- "Keep" and the fifth sysmbol - 09/27/05 03:15 AM

I can not make out the symbol on the pedestal in the keep. I've squinted so hard and often that my eyes are now blurry. I've even used a magnefying glass. But resorting to this finally made me think that there must be another way of seeing this symbol.
What have I missed?
Incidently my screen is at 600x800.

Re: Myst V Tahgira- "Keep" and the fifth sysmbol - 09/27/05 04:03 AM

No, you are right. It is hard to see.

If you want, you can try Bert Jamin's walkthrough which shows it also, but it's a little hard to see there as well.

Re: Myst V Tahgira- "Keep" and the fifth sysmbol - 09/27/05 10:56 AM

Hi all,

I had a really weird thing happen in my game in trying to get across the lake to get to the Bubble Keep.

Maybe the keep was somewhere else I don't know.

The walkthrough said to click on the heat symbol on the slate and drop the slate. Next you had to turn around and take 2 steps forward and walk around the path across the lake.

Well.....I tried to walk every which way I could think of and never did find the path to the keep.

I finally decided to just go to the slate and draw the symbol that the walkthrough had and luckly it worked. The symbol was placed on the pedestal.
Posted By: dadguy

Re: Myst V Tahgira- "Keep" and the fifth sysmbol - 09/27/05 02:13 PM

Yes, that will work, but takes some of the fun and gameplay out.

Did you see the path of "growth" across the pond after you turned on the heat? If you did, then the path across is to start in the middle, turn right to the right end, turn left to the far end, turn left to the middle of pond, then go forward on that white peninsula in the center. You must make sure you are careful and do not fall off of the "growth" on the pond or else you'll have to start over from the beginning.

Good luck,

Dadguy

Re: Myst V Tahgira- "Keep" and the fifth sysmbol - 09/27/05 07:31 PM

Hi,

I never got any growth in my game or else I would have tried to walk on that.

I even tried more than once to use the slate to melt the ice lake but nothing happened. That is why I thought maybe there was another way across that I just wasn't seeing.

Re: Myst V Tahgira- "Keep" and the fifth sysmbol - 09/28/05 12:34 PM

I finally got the symbol for the "Keep". And it was one of many that I tried before. I'm beginning to think my 'Bahro' for that earlier one was a very fussy judge and simple refused to accept my drawing. lol
Posted By: wheelchairwarrior

Re: Myst V Tahgira- "Keep" and the fifth sysmbol - 09/28/05 04:57 PM

i have tried repeatedly to draw the keep, and it just will not have it. Sometimes it takes it from the first bubble and goes to the pedestal in the snow outside the huts and leaves it there. Does anybody know what this means? wheelie

Re: Myst V Tahgira- "Keep" and the fifth sysmbol - 09/28/05 05:21 PM

Wheelie,

Are you certain you have the symbol correct? For me it was very difficult to see across that "divide".

If the Bahro delivers it to a pedestal, it's either because he thought it looked like the symbol on that pedestal, or it's a bug (in my opinion).

If you want I can email you a tiny picture of the symbol from the pedestal at the Keep.

Re: Myst V Tahgira- "Keep" and the fifth sysmbol - 09/29/05 11:26 AM

thanks that would be helpful.I am at present drawing the symbol on the slate whilst facing the bubble with the keep in it. The bahro just keeps picking it up and putting it down again. Gwenda

Re: Myst V Tahgira- "Keep" and the fifth sysmbol - 09/29/05 07:36 PM

My Bahro was not very fussy. I got the symbol completely wrong and he still accepted it.

I did take a screen shot afterwards and blow it up using MS Paint - easy to see what it looks like if you do that.

Re: Myst V Tahgira- "Keep" and the fifth sysmbol - 09/29/05 10:11 PM

Wheelie, I have another idea. Check to see if the HEAT symbol is on one of the little icons on the lower right of the slate (when it is in your hands and UP for drawing). I think that if you have drawn it successfully once you MUST use the icon to re-activate it, or else the Bahro will get confused.

Let us know if that does it for you.

In the WT for Taghira, Bert says to draw an Ankh on the slate. Well, I drew about 20 ankhs without success before realizing he meant anchor. Drew that and Viola! the little monster took it.

well, I have been trying to draw the keep symbol now for four days. I have had it as near perfect as I can get it. My hubby has tried, my carers have tried and at last, it finally worked. How frustrating, still press on for further frustrations I have no doubt Gwenda

Re: Myst V Tahgira- "Keep" and the fifth sysmbol - 10/01/05 07:58 PM

How hard can it be to duplicate two rectangles connected by two lesser rectangles? I've drawn the dern thing a dozen times and had it at least as good as Bert's WT screenshot, but to no avail. This the fussiest, glitchiest game Ubisoft has come up with. My guess is they released it before it was ready.

Re: Myst V Tahgira- "Keep" and the fifth sysmbol - 10/01/05 08:43 PM

OK guys, I finally got to the keep! I think the secret is...after you draw the keep symbol on the slate and drop it on the ground, leave the bubble and go clear to the end of the ice cave before you turn around and watch the monkey take the slate. Worked for me.
Good luck,

Re: Myst V: End of Ages -- Hints and Spoilers for Tahgira - 09/22/05 05:29 PM

Geo,

SPOILERS...

You can leave the slate on the podium any time you need to climb something. When on the podium, the Bahro won't come and take it away.

Did you try the heat solution? It has a "thawing" effect on switches...

Dadguy

Re: Myst V: End of Ages -- Hints and Spoilers for Tahgira - 09/22/05 05:41 PM

So I dont have to get the slate near the hut podium? I can just draw anywhere, like the cave, and leave it there?
Posted By: Jenny

Re: Myst V: End of Ages -- Hints and Spoilers for Tahgira - 09/22/05 06:05 PM

Geo, if you notice the podiums, once you've marked the slate with the sign on that podium, it shows up on all of them, and all you have to do to go to one is to click on the sign on whichever podium you are near. So you can get to the one near the hut just by drawing the sign on it to the slate.

Does that make any sense... think

Re: Myst V: End of Ages -- Hints and Spoilers for Tahgira - 09/22/05 08:54 PM

KateVa,

Spoiler!

If you have the correct symbol, the Bahro must come to read it (i.e., drop the slate and back away) and bring the warmth. After he does, pick up the slate again in case you need to make it warm again.

Re: Myst V: End of Ages -- Hints and Spoilers for Tahgira - 09/22/05 09:24 PM

TY Dadguy. Gotta tell you this poor Bahro is getting really tired of me right now. He stopped just scratching his head at me, and screamed. I have made interesting fog and spurts of steam in several places, so I guess I have the right symbol. Question still is, just where does this slate go! Tried the end of the pipes, the "button" spot on the two big pipes, even near the place I see the drawing (that was a great one to watch) but all of them seem to have no effect on the buttons and swiches. Perhaps I have missed something else..or is this timed?

Ok, I drew the symbol and dropped the plate. He looked at it threw up his hands as if he finally got it and there was a flash of light.I went to the bridge and all kinds of steam was coming up ahead.Good I thought, but I could not cross the bridge.About a minute later the steam stopped and I was able to cross the bridge. When I went to the switches nothing had changed. No power.I am getting frustrated.A game is no fun when you get frustrated.

Geo! Great news! I have been carrying the slate all over and dropping it in all the likely places I could find. One of them, dropping it by the frozen "grid" (the pipes in the pond) in the middle, has popped up the buttons on the big pipe on the left!!! Onward!!!

I cannot get the slate in my possesion from any pedistal other than the one in the cave.Of course I cant take it very far from there. If I leave it on the pedistal in the cave I cannot get it from any other pedistals.Perhaps I have a glitch.

Re: Myst V: End of Ages -- Hints and Spoilers for Tahgira - 09/23/05 12:59 AM

Geo, when you mark a symbol on the slate and drop it, the bahro picks it up and puts it on the pedestal. At that point, the symbol you drew on the slate should be marked on the pedestal, and you can travel there from any other pedestal by clicking on that mark. If you have already gotten the steam to rise, you should have at least two symbols on the pedestals...
Posted By: KateVa

Re: Myst V: End of Ages -- Hints and Spoilers for Tahgira - 09/23/05 01:30 AM

OK, have to edit that last post. Doesnt seem to matter where I drop the slate-the Bahro warms things up and leaves the slate behind. I quickly go back over the slate to pick it up and then "park" it (just carry the slate to the pedestal by the main hut Geo) on the pedestal. When the steam stops I run back to the pedestal and repeat the process. Playing with bubbles now!

Re: Myst V: End of Ages -- Hints and Spoilers for Tahgira - 09/23/05 01:58 AM

OK, Geo and KateVA.

There are two items that you have asked about. Let me try to go over them.

1.) Moving slates up ladders... Yes, you can't carry the slate up that ladder. So, you have to get the Bahro to carry it for you. To do this all you have to do is draw the symbol from the pedestal that is at the top of the ladder on the slate and drop it. Back away and the Bahro will pick it up and put it on the pedestal that has that symbol. This will also add a NEW link spot on the home pedestal (pedestal #1) so you can always get to the new area from pedestal #1. You'll use this many times in the game to travel to other pedestals that are unreachable. Then just walk up the ladder and pick up the slate from the pedestal at the top of the ladder (pedestal #2 in this Age).

2. The steam and heat! When you make the heat symbol and drop the slate, back away... the Bahro will appear and will turn on the geysers and steam. Pick up the slate so you can use it again without chasing it back to pedestal #1. You do NOT have to leave the slate anywhere to have the heat "work on" a certain switch... it just has to be turned on. So, when you need the steam and heat, just call the symbol again (it will be on your "menu" of symbols) and it will be drawn again. Do this again near the switches that are frozen to "thaw" them for approximately 90 seconds. Quickley set the switch positions where you want them before the steam stops. If you run out of time, call him again for another 90 seconds.

Having fun!

Re: Myst V: End of Ages -- Hints and Spoilers for Tahgira - 09/23/05 02:04 AM

How the heck do you back up? I always have to drop slate, turn around, and advance before I hear the Bahro sound. By the time I turn back around he disappears.

I'm having some problems manuvering in this game. Uru and Myst IV were very smooth. In this game I seem to be going too fast and have problems turning. Any advice?

Thanks.

Re: Myst V: End of Ages -- Hints and Spoilers for Tahgira - 09/23/05 02:46 AM

Jayne, I know what you mean.

Here is a clue for "backing up" which is the best way to drop the slate... you get to watch the Bahro!

I found that the SCROLLer button, if you have one, can be "clicked" like a button. If you click it down instead of "rolling" it, you will back up for as long as you hold the button down.

Try it!

You can always reach over and use the DOWN arrow or the S button to back up also.

As far as maneuvering, it all depends on which "mode" you use. I like the freedom of Advanced Full motion, but the Classic and Classic+ are simpler but give less options. As far as speed, try slowing the mouse sensitivity. Keep trying till you have the best combo.

Cool game!

I found that using the same method of moving around that I used in Uru works really well for me. I'm not sure which of the methods described it is, but I use the arrow keys to move and swing the mouse around to look...

Dadguy

Re: Myst V: End of Ages -- Hints and Spoilers for Tahgira - 09/23/05 02:26 PM

Wheel-the "shape of an envelope" sounds to me like the first shape in the icy cave. If so, put it on the same shape you see on the floor of the cave...

Dadguy-my thanks to you again for the Slate Instructions. An addendum-I couldnt operate the wheels on the huts while I had the slate in hand, and that is when I returned it to the pedestal.

I also found that writing the symbol for another pedestal gave you instant access to that area. Handy!

Hi Mikeplay,

That symbol is hard to see. Let's see if I can describe it...

SPOILER!

The symbol is four rectangles on top of each other. The top one is big, under it is a small one, under it is another big one, and under it the last one is another small one. So, large small large small stacked on top of each other. The large ones are the same size and the small ones are the same size. There is no space between them.

Hope that helps... If you get it right the 1st pedestal will get a new symbol on it to get you across the divide.

I have tried over and over again and tried every possible postion and nothing works anyone know where to move switches 1 2 and 3 in front of the water field. Do I have to adjust both the 3 red and the 3 blue switches to get the water field to work? The WT that came with the game just says reactivated the heat effect and turned a few switches on the junction control panels. However, they don't say where they put the levers. Re: Myst V: End of Ages -- Hints and Spoilers for Tahgira - 09/23/05 10:49 PM

I really need slate/pedestal help!

So far I have spent more time fussing with these things than playing the game!

I have just put the slate on the third pedestal - the one at the Tahgira Village. The strategy guide says that after I place the slate on the pedestal "noting that the third pedestal's symbol now appeared in one of the Slate's previously empty icons" - well, there are no symbols in any of the icons. They are all empty. Even the Pedestal 2 icon that was in one of them before is gone. They are all empty.

Now what do I do?

Christine, I don't think you are supposed to put the slate on the pedestal! I think you mark the symbol on it, and then drop it on the ground and step back--the bahro will pick it up and put it on the pedestal. At that point, the symbol should appear on the pedestal and you can link to that pedestal from any other one.

Dutch, you're past my knowledge--I'll see if I can track down Dadguy. He seems to be ahead of us...

Hi Dutch,

After the heat wears off (90 seconds) the tablet is as cool as it's going to get. Are you saying that the Bahro won't pick it up? Try just backing up further and further until he feels comfortable enough to get it.

Re: Myst V: End of Ages -- Hints and Spoilers for Tahgira - 09/24/05 01:11 AM

CES,

OK, when you make the symbol of the 3rd pedestal on the tablet, and the Bahro picks it up and places it on the 3rd pedestal, don't expect a new symbol on the third pedestal. It creates the new symbol on the 1st pedestal only (accessed by clicking the left pentagon shaped symbol). Then, from the 1st pedestal you can always hit the NEW 3rd pedestal symbol which has appeared.

Hope that makes sense...

Thanks Jenny, I got it figured out. I had done exactly what you said. It was when I went back to pick up the slate that the icons on the slate were empty.

So what did I do? I quit the game. Later, when I logged back into the game, VOILA!, the symbols were there on the slate.

Hi all,

What kind of book is it that came with your game? My book only has 11 pages in it.

Am I missing a book or is it a strategy guide that you order separately.

Re: Myst V: End of Ages -- Hints and Spoilers for Tahgira - 09/24/05 11:45 AM

there is a version that comes with a strategyguide, but I have bought a cheaper version without strategyguide. in my country we have one version only. and that is without guide.

Re: Myst V: End of Ages -- Hints and Spoilers for Tahgira - 09/24/05 12:31 PM

Margaret,

After you finish an Age, you must link back to pedestal #1 of that Age (the one that will have several links to the other pedestals in that Age), then click the center link to Direbo, then from Direbo, use the book on a stand outside of the bubble to link back to the Great Shaft. There are four different chambers at different levels of the shaft, each of which have linking books to different Ages. Find the next one.

Have fun,

VHL -- the Limited Edition comes with the Prima Strategy Guide (miniature version).

I'm taking my time and experimenting with the slate. Why oh why didn't I take art lessons at some point in my life? Sometimes I'm not sure if the Bahro is scratching his head in puzzlement because I've written the wrong symbol or if I've written the right one, but badly.

I like the fact that, once used correctly, the symbol gets inputted into the slate and you can just click to use it again.

I've made steam come out of those hut things, and fire out of the one with the map in it. I'm not sure what to do with it yet, and I can't actually see where the fire is generated from -- there must be a stove or something up top in that hut.

I've found that, using the Advanced mode, I can move around more freely, get closer to things and even around certain things that I couldn't before.

This is a great game. I've just started it, and I'm already regretting that it's going to end.

Margaret, you'll see that although the Great Shaft link rooms all look alike, the symbol on the linking book shows a different quadrent highlighted.

Re: Myst V: End of Ages -- Hints and Spoilers for Tahgira - 09/26/05 08:53 AM

Well...it's seems I'm having one of my "senior-moments" again..!!

I have been able to get the junction valves set...but then...I don't have a clue what I am supposed to do after that.

When I go and look at the "grid"...it is bubbling. Now what..? It seems my slate disappears...and...when I go to retrieve it (from wherever)...the valves reset.

Any assistance would be appreciated.

Re: Myst V: End of Ages -- Hints and Spoilers for Tahgira - 09/26/05 10:30 AM

Not to many around so I'll give it a shot. The idea here is to set the valves in such a way that it "heats" the pipes in the grid creating a path that allows you to walk across to the other side.
You can see your starting point in front of you.
Just so you don'lose your slate, put it back on the pedestle after your done. Mordack

Re: Myst V: End of Ages -- Hints and Spoilers for Tahgira - 09/26/05 12:18 PM

Dawna, They didn't reset. If you look closely you'll see that there is a faint indication that although the valves recessed down to their lower position, they are still diverted as you left them. It's a little hard to see because the position is very faint.

In any case, since the "heat" command that created the bubbly growth on the pond only lasts for 90 seconds, see if you can get across the path within that time. Set off the HEAT again, pick up the slate and start down the center path that goes to the right and then back and toward the center. You have to get off of the path on that middle, slightly raised snowy peninsula. If you fall off the bubbly growth, you will not be able to cross; in fact, depending on where you fall off you may be stuck until the HEAT stops. Then you'll have to go back and try the HEAT again.

But you won't have to fool with the valves again once they are set.

Enjoy!

Can anybody shed any light as to what I should do with the valves on the towers. The bahro creates heat and I see steam rising from the tops of the towers. Not sure what I am supposed to do, or rather, what positions I should place those valves in.
Posted By: dadguy

Re: Myst V: End of Ages -- Hints and Spoilers for Tahgira - 09/26/05 05:15 PM

Yes, Alan...

Spoiler answer....

...turn them all on (to the right). These steam machines all send their steam to the diverter valves (follow the pipes) which then go to the pond with pipes under it.

That place is Todelmer, rockingjranch.
I know there is a general Todelmer thread somewhere..will try to find it and bump for you.
You won't find too much help in this Tahgira thread for Todelmer I don't think.

PS. Hint: turning on the power first is always a good thing to do in Myst wink

I have a big problem. I'm in the Toldemer Age, have completed everything and now I have to go back to the control room and set the last coordinates so the Bahro can do his job, but I can't get all the way down stairs because the cable is blocking my way again. Can anybody tell me what I need to do?

Sorry, posted this to the wrong forum.

hmm, so you got the last set of co-ordinates by taking the tram I am presuming?.. did you come over to the first tower on the tram too? If you did, just go back on the tram to the other tower and pedestal, and link back to the bubble pedestal on the first tower.

Re: Myst V: End of Ages -- Hints and Spoilers for Tahgira - 10/16/05 10:06 PM

Grannygamer,

What do you mean it didn't work? Are you saying you tried to ride the tram back across and it didn't work? It's a pretty simple procedure; you just pull that lever in the car.

Then walk up the ladder (or up through the building) and out to the pedestal where you click the "homepedestal" symbol that looks like an envelope outline. You will arrive at the home pedestal and you can then run up the stairs to the red control room.

We can't send you a save for this game, so good luck!

Try pushing it the other direction.

Re: Myst V: End of Ages -- Hints and Spoilers for Tahgira - 10/17/05 12:55 AM

DrDel has it, I believe. She has become a wizard at Myst V.

I'll try it myself to see if that works. I know I have made the Tram ride both directions; I just can't remember exactly how I did it. It makes sense that if you were in the middle, the Tram would need to know WHICH way to go.

Let us know if this does it for you. Push it by clicking on it then dragging the cursor up and away rather than down.

Me again. I finally got Bahra to recognize the slate. I entered the Keep and pressed the slate to release the arm.Good so far. Now when I press the triangle shaped sign to return to Deribo, instead it returns me to Taghira.
I'm getting kind of confused. Does anyone
know whats wrong?
Posted By: dadguy

Re: MYST V - 10/03/05 01:19 AM

Nothing's wrong. This is how it works. The triangle returns you to pedestal #1 of Tahgira, then use the middle symbol (three verticle rectangles on sticks) on pedestal #1 to return to Direbo.

Give it a try.

Re: MYST V - 10/03/05 08:58 PM

At the green light in the control room,I move the left lever to the top and the right lever
to the center. The inner ring of the device does not turn. Do I have to wait awhile till it does,or is it supposed to turn right away? Then after I go up the outer stairs to the blockage and back down to the control room,up the red stairs to the right to the end at the control panel.I move the levers but no green button comes on. Whats the problem??? Sorry if I'm a pain. Thanks.

It's the LEFT lever to the middle and the RIGHT lever to the top.
