BAAGS and Dark Fall 2: Lights Out -- SPOILER

I'll bet you all already talked about this when the game first came out but I literally laughed out loud when I saw BAAGS mentioned in Dark Fall 2: Lights Out!!

This MUST have been a reference to here, right?

I replayed this just last week, and I remembered to look for this very special fortune cookie! It did make me smile when I found it the first time around.

I hope he doesn't depart from what I see as a mini-genre he's created. I would include in this mini-genre, in addition to the Dark Fall games of course, Barrow Hill and Scratches.

Anyone know of other games that are similar in mood and gameplay?

Raj, how about the two Last Half of Darknesses? Daemonica? The Delaware St. Johns?

That's just the kind of tip I need!
I haven't tried or even read reviews about any of those games.
But you can bet I'll seek them out now!

I love games that can actually make me feel a little scared.
I don't mean shocked, rather I mean games that make me hesitate before I open a door or something.
The first of these for me, one of the first games I ever played, was AMBER: Journeys Beyond. WOW! That was, and is, a goodie! And spooky!

Then there was Blackstone Chronicles. I was actually afraid of going into the basement!

Gabriel Knight II: The Beast Within almost had the right atmosphere with the werewolves and all, but didn't quite do it. Neither did 7th guest or 11th hour, although I think they are great games.

I am looking forward to Phantasmagoria and Phantasmagoria II: Puzzle of Flesh... and maybe Shivers because of what friends have told me about them.

And, if I may dip into the Dark Side for a moment, the orphanage in Thief III is one of the creepiest "places" I have ever "been". Wonderful job on atmosphere. And while I'm on the Dark Side, System Shock II got to me as well. All those dead bodies everywhere...

It's always amazing to me when a game can give me a genuine shudder.

Oooh! I also wanted to mention a feature specific to the games I mentioned as a Boakes-influenced mini-genre:

In these four games I loved to take tons of notes, pages and pages, and I figured out many of the puzzles by myself.

I'm not sure why I feel this way about those four games in particular. I almost never take notes. Much easier to look up a walkthrough or hints. I never took notes for any of the other games I've mentioned in this post.

Looks like I need to do some more thinking about the four games I'm calling a mini-genre to figure out what makes them tick for me.

Thanks Raj! Well, we just happen to have reviews on all those games right up there under gameboomer reviews. You've named some great oldies - and it looks like you have several in mind that are a lot of fun! Shivers had great atmosphere, and it always seems to find its way to the top twenty GB list. If you haven't played them, you might also consider Inhererent Evil, and the Dracula games (their titles escape me at the moment . ) I'm sure there are several that I'm not remembering too.

I went straight to the reviews here right after I posted.
AND, I went and played a Delaware St. John demo. Right up my alley!
AND, And, and... I actually already HAVE Inherent Evil. I'll just have to raise it up on my (long, long, long) "to play" list.

I played both the Dracula games and really enjoyed them. I remember that the graphics were especially pretty and impressed me.

Another game I think was creepy is Sanitarium, but I'm not sure if I am remembering it correctly. Loved the game, though, even though it's certainly not in the usual adventure game style.

And thanks, Guybrush! For me, AMBER was fantastic. An all-time favorite.
And incidently, just to stray off topic, I LOVED all of the Monkey Island games too!

I think you're right about Sanitarium Raj - those little kids really creeped me out.
Glad the Delawares look good to you - you probably realize this already, but the same guy who developed them also did Inherent Evil. He's now working on Inherent Evil 2, but I don't think that is coming out for a while.
