How Much Are Our Minds Influenced - 08/26/07 06:57 PM

Mag, suggested starting this here so I thought I would be the first. I was talking in Adventure Game Discussions about how the game Delaware St. John 3 may have triggered a sort of waking violent nightmare. scared

Has anyone had a game, movie or book trigger a similar event. If so tell us about it. eek

Hi Star...

I think the only game through out my years of playing..That had an effect on me was Spirits EyE....

For some reason that game made me look behind my back lol
I also had this weird dream of floating people with demon faces scared

Darleen, that is interesting. I just finished it and I am generally sensitive to things like that (CSI sometimes gives me nightmares). I thought it was spooky fun, but had no heebie jeebies from it. crazy

Starlite, I don't play scary things as a rule, so my only "flashback" is when I see something in the real world and think, "Oh, I'd better write this down 'cos I might need it later." smile

L4L

I am a spook nut...I love a Great spooky game...If I play a game a real long time...I will actually see the images in my brain when I try to sleep..I think I posted about that once..

I think its a Great thing for me...When a game has such an influence like that...I am not much for Gorey games...Where a person gets killed...But I do love a great Spooky game with demons lol

I don't blame you, Starlite - the Delaware games are scary

I stopped playing Silent Hill 3, because I kept having dreams of the creatures chasing me eek (someday I'll start playing it again)

The only time I saw a game translate into something eerie in real life was when a new thread I was writing about Dark Fall: Lights Out automatically stickied itself at the top of the Adventure Discussion forum.

I found out later that there was a certain influence going on that I hadn't anticipated...

Hmm - I've had it happen when I read something ,or watched something, that was disturbing. For example, I recently finished a novel by Elizabeth Flock , "Me & Emma". It wasn't my usual type of book ,and was as difficult to read ,as it was to put down.
Haven't had it happen with any games .

Some of the shooters have had me doing battle all night in my dreams. :/

Very exhausting nights! lol

The journal in Scratches gave me nightmares - the ending didn't help either. But the most notable event was just after I finished Myst - Exile. Coming home from shopping, I looked at a driver stopped at the light and nearly ran off the road. Sitting behind the wheel was the exact image of the guy ( whose name I can't remember) I had been following all through the game. Long, shaggy gray hair, beaky nose, the whole bit except for the robe. Very confusing to have the game people come to life.

Ah, Brad Dourif, pretty good actor. I like this guy he's got the scary mad scientist look about him. First movie I think he did was One Flew Over The Coco's Nest.

It's amazing when you think of it how fragile the human mind actually is and so influential too.

I remember when I was in the hospital for my back and they were shooting me up for 4 days with Morphine and Gravol. I fell asleep and I could see Buck Rogers chasing me shooting a laser at me, so I woke up, I'm still in the hospital, good, went back to sleep then Alien starts chasing me down a tunnel. Woke up again and was afraid to go back to sleep. I was so glad to get out of that hospital just to get away from the drugs.

Why do you think the human mind is fragile? Or did you mean the brain?
Edit: Never mind, this is an adventure discussions board. I forget myself sometimes. lol

after reading the fall of the house of usher by e.a.poe i couldnt sleep (hint:a stormy night when youre alone is NOT a good time to be reading e.a.poe) but never encountered a game to give me nightmares...however i couldnt sleep after syberia i playes them both without hardly getting any sleep and barely swallowing what my rommate put into my mouth..the whole story concept and its beauty made me want more...also i am an engineer and complex mechanical constructions are one of my main interests....so this was definetly and still is THE game for me...

hmpf..i just realised theres nothing i can think of that could be scary...darn media desensibilisation!

Edgar Allen Poe the Stephen King of his time. Have you ever heard The Fall Of The House Of Usher by Alan Parsons Project? Try reading that story with that song playing in the background, it will probably add a whole new atmosphere to it.

nickie, you can consider the mind or brain to be fragile when you consider what can happen to a person once it breaks down. Given the affect that Delaware St. John 3 had on me maybe my mind is fragile at times.

Something seems to be a little wrong here. This message should be part of the Finished Delaware St. John thread. I think people are missing what this message was supposed to be about. I guess I should explain again.

When I was playing Delaware St. John 3 I had a sort of waking nightmare where I felt I was being dragged off the bed, so I started kicking at what looked like someone in a black hooded robe. It seemed like there were two of them in the room. That's how this got started. Sorry if I confused anyone.

Dark Fall III (series with the dual characters?) not sure, but the screaching monsters gave be the heebie jeebies.

The scariest movie I ever saw and gave me the most reaccuring nightmares was the Original Texas Chainsaw Massacre. That was back in the late '60's, still have trouble watching the original to this day. The sequels aren't nearly as scary.

rotflHey,Starlite ,let's run with this the way it's going - it's getting interesting.

Daikka - you sound to me like the perfect player for the "Rhem " games. I think you would like them .

MDAMLADY, have you seen the movie The Grudge.

Actually I think the one movie that affected me to point where I woke up and thought someone was standing at the bottom of my bed was A Gun In The House with Sally Struthers. I was living alone at the time so of course that movie would have a bad affect on me.

Also I think the one movie that made me change the channel out of fright was Salem's Lot, when Barlow came up out of the kitchen floor. I think Salem's Lot would make an excellent adventure game. Hopefully my next game will give everyone a good scare.
