continued games - 09/13/07 03:47 PM

think I know this topic is approached from time to time, but as another summer ends, I'd like to voice my objection to and concerns about "To be continued" games. I recntly 'finished' DREAMFALL and loved it. I know there are supposed to be further installments coming, but this game was released 18 months ago and I don't even know the name of the next installment, let alone when it will appear. I also realized that AGON was released as a single unit 2004. THE LOST SWORD OF TOLEDO is scheduled for "Q1 2007" but it is now Q3 of 2007 and there's no game. This has happened before and I fear it costs game developers money. I know these organizations need to pay for the time and effort involved in game developemnt, but if the buying public is irritated and doubtful that the story or game be completed in a reasonable time (Or at all), I fear they won't make the initial purchase; the first part of a game won't be successful; and we consumers will miss some good games as a result of what appear to be 'lack of support."

I have no idea what the answer is, but I fear the problem will become more and more troublesome. I would hate for games such as DREAMFALL and AGON to disappear from the market simply because gamers have lost faith in the fact that they will be completed.

I understand where you're coming from but there are just too many variables in making the game: funding, technical problems, new technology like Vista adjustments, in some cases publisher problems, game reviews, gamer comments, real life with small developers, public relations expertise...

We can only hope that we get quality games if-when the 'to be continued games' do come out.

I feel the same way about 'Secrets of Atlantis'. I've read reviews, some good and some bad. I really like this game and hope it will get a sequel.

Just thought I'd post an opinion.

I believe in the case of Dreamfall it was budget constraints and the concerns over software piracy. If there's a Longest Journey 3, it'll most likely be an MMO like Myst.

That's off the top of my head though - I'm not sure where I read about it.

I couldn't finish Dreamfall. frown The stealth elements got me. (I'm not very sneaky!)

Hi smile

I don't mind too much waiting for follow-ons if I know that's the situation in advance.

But paying full price for a game I think is "complete" only to find that it has a shock "non-ending" - and that I will have to wait for the next part (which may not even be in development) is, in my opinion, not on !! rolleyes

Simon II and Runaway II were both like that and I consider the practice to be rather unethical .... frown

Cheers.

As long as I enjoy playing the game at the time but I must admit it so iritating when you never get to know the ending

Hi smile

Oh, I did enjoy playing both games, very much in fact, but that doesn't alter how I feel about "no ending" with "no warning" slapforehead

Cheers.

MMO is Massive Multiplayer Online like Myst Online: Uru Live at GameTap.
