Does 'In Development' Drive you crazy?

Does 'In Development' Drive you crazy? - 09/26/07 03:12 PM

First let me say I love reading about brand new games in development. No other site is as informative as this one NOR do they have the awesome employees with sparkling personalities!

BUT!!!! It drives me crazy because I know after getting excited it's going to be 12+ months before I get to enjoy the game! ( and that is being generous )

Lately a ton of fun games have been posted about but I never seem to see the end of the tunnel. i.e. the game in my computer!

I keep thinking one day I'll get on these forums and see a post about an awesome new adventure game that noone knew about that is available for purchase NOW!

A girl can dream...

Actually, I like knowing that there are games that are in the works. If I don't hear about them, I'd worry that bright developers might have been discouraged by the market and adventure games are going to dwindle down. During that development stage - we can encourage or help in whatever way we can to get them going.
Also, more 'in development' games gives variety to the genre too.

Thanks about the 'informative' comment - that's our Becky with Carla hunting for news and Chief updating us on trailers, videos and Free Games.

Hi smile

Well I thought there seemed to have been LOTS of new games being released - easily a dozen in the last couple of months alone grin

Cheers.

I don't know about crazy..But I do get overly excited when I hear about a new game..That the developers are working on.

I am happy as far as release dates...I already have at least 3 on pre-order

I had a screenshot of a 'game in developement' (like around the time The Longest Journey was first released), that was so cool and nicely done I made it my screensaver (on my P98). It had no name, but I just KNEW I'd be playing it one day.
Wonder what happened to it...

I have so many adventure games still to play that I rarely worry about it the cool possibilities down the road. The only ones that I am even remotely anxious to play right now are fresh installments from favorite companies/series.

To be honest, I used to get more worked up about neat Indy games that seemed to take forever to finish. (I remember drooling over Keepsake's artwork, for example, and thinking it was taking forever!) Long productions times & repeated delays are common enough in Indy productions. I'd say I thought I was understanding about that even before - but there's nothing like trying to make one yourself to teach you all about patience. lol

Actually this is why I haven't put a page up myself about the projects (yes, that's now multiple) we're doing. We have some screenshots, but I'd rather not ask anyone to take these plans seriously until we at least have a demo for one of them, or put up that 'quick' freebie that was supposed to have been completed in June. blush My husband's continuing adventures with his health issues have made concentrating on outside projects difficult, to say the least.

At least I have gotten confident enough that we WILL finish one to make internal target dates for our goals. Like the wit of yore, I love deadlines... I love the whooshing noise the make as they go by. lol

And what about the reverse?

Mikael & Eleen (MDNA Games, Sweden) on their Indy ownsomes, have produced and marketed 4 games, one each year. thumbsup

Each game has advanced technically over the previos one and their latest, East Side Story, is much longer and complex than any previous.

They do not remain static, but have improved their techniques with each game and used more sophisticated game engines (this latest even being VISTA-compatible).

Each game has come out on the dot when promised (generally in October of each year)...........
........ and this latest was actually released and distributed nearly a month BEFORE the promised release date.

A record not easily beaten for reliability IMO !

I'm confused!

Does that mean that Mad's previous post is also off the topic??

Just for information & maybe logic ! confused
But I wonder if it's really worth the time & energy to analyze it ? think

And now...back to our regularly scheduled postings. devilchili

action9026, as some others have said, I too enjoy knowing that games are being worked on and I can wait since there always seems to be something to fill in the time. I have noticed that there are a few games though that seem to have been "in development" for years. grin

We had a similar discussion a few months back. Some people would prefer not to know anything about a game until it's just about ready to release, so they don't have the frustration of waiting for a highly anticipated game. Other people seem to enjoy the anticipation almost as much as they eventually enjoy the game. lol

I like finding out about a game well in advance. There are so many good adventures I haven't played, that I can easily fill in the time as I wait for more to release. I agree that seeing release dates slip again and again can be disappointing, though.

I'm certainly one of those - I enjoy the anticipation more than most of the games. lol (not that there aren't some very good ones wink )
But sometimes a game will come along out of the blue with little fanfare - Destination Treasure Island comes to mind.

I don't mind "in development" if it means it will be without bugs when it is finally finished. But I am waiting on The Lost Crown. sleep

I agree old lady and if I might add one more to it: I don't mind "in development" if it means it will be without a rushed ending - been seeing a lot of those lately!

BTW, according to Amazon, The Lost Crown is supposed to be out in the next week or two. Ummm, not that Amazon is an accurate gauge! I don't mind waiting longer for another Jonathan Boakes game anyway. He puts a lot of care, research and detail into his stuff so it'll be well worth it when it comes out. smile

Culpa Innata is one I watched closely with a little worry. Some I have long forgotten, like the one I think called 'A game by Joe' or something.

Re: Does 'In Development' Drive you crazy? - 09/30/07 02:37 AM

Thanks for all the replies guys!

I think my problem is that I like immediate gratification. When I see unbelievable screenshots I drool and wonder why I don't have the game in my greedy hands right NOW.

What I really mean to say is...' Pretty screenshots. Why must I wait for the game to be finished? Don't they know how much I'm drooling over Culpa Innata? They should be working 24 hours a day until the game is in my computer. How dare they? ' smile

lol They probably are working 24 hours a day. Every once in awhile they sleep on the old sofa at the office...

I dont so much mind "in development".What I hate is I can only seem to fine a new game in the stores about once or twice a year.I am unable to buy anything on line so have to rely on the stores. It seems like other types of games are constantly coming out especially action.
I have been waiting for the game"City of the Metronome" I think for two years now.The last article I could find on it was dated 2006.It looked really interesting.Anyone know anything about it?
I have "The Lost Crown" on order.I here the new Nancy Drew game comes out in a couple weeks.2 in a month I'm excited.

Re: Does 'In Development' Drive you crazy? - 10/03/07 06:02 AM

brajki,

Can you not ask your local stores to order it for you?
Before I went exclusive online game buying, I would call the local stores and ask them if they will have it in stock. If not, I would ask if they can place an order for me and they would.
I think they have to order 2 or 3 if it is not in the list of shipments they have.

Brajki -- as far as I know, Metronome has been put on hold, and is (sadly) no longer in development.

They didn't for me. But they can't order just one game; they have to order I think 2-3.
The manager was nice. I haven't been back there for a while now.
