Why do you keep your games?

Just out of curiosity, I wonder why we keep games. Me myself, I play an adventure game and I can't replay because I remember it too well.

But I still have a deep need to keep it and treasure it and put it in a special place. I just love to look at the game and sigh, and remember how great it was...
And I hate to give up a game that I didn't like because maybe I might like it later...

So tell me, why do you keep your games??

I replay. After a few years there's a lot I don't remember about a game, even a favorite one. And then when I replay I may start to remember certain things or I may have completely forgotten other things and they're like new.

I do keep some games that I may not replay -- more now than I used to. Amber and Lightbringer are two games that I've bought and sold/traded and bought again because I changed my mind and decided I wanted to play them again after all. I only get rid of games I don't think I'll ever replay -- if I can. Anyone want a copy of The Scroll? Didn't think so.

Every now and then I think, I really need to get rid of some of my games. But then I think, what if I want to replay it someday? I might not be able to get it again. I also have some that I probably will never play but they're still in my closet too. I have no idea why I can't get rid of them.

I replay most of my games, especially the ones like Nancy Drew, where you can ask different questions or do things in a different order. I like trying to do chores or tasks differently than I did before and see if I get a different reaction.

I used to think I was ruthless about only keeping games in my collection that I knew I would want to re-play ....

And I do gradually work my way through and re-play games all my games. [Love 'em !! ]

But looking at just how many I HAVE kept, I think I'll have to re-define the word "ruthless"

I keep my games around my computer and like looney I like to look at them and remember the fun I had playing them. When there are no new games to be had I pick one and play it over again. Just cant seem to get rid of them, doesnt seem right, at least now I know I have company.

In the past, I've had to sell and/or give away dozens of games because we were moving house to a different country and it would be too costly to take them all with us. A lot of the ones we did take were damaged or covered with mould so I had to throw them out.

I am now buying these same games again, if I can find them, just so I can replay them sometime in the future (am far away from pension yet). Also, I like looking at the shelf with all the boxes and have fond memories about those games.

Jenny100, what's so bad about The Scroll that nobody wants it? If you want to get rid of it, I might be interested, have never played it.

Hi Looney. I keep my games because I love to replay them. I find the 2nd time around I notice so much more in the game and often discover things I missed. By replaying games I also become more adept at the controls in more difficult games.

Because I'm too lazy to get organized enough to sell off the ones I'll never replay . I keep looking at them and thinking how obsolete they are goining to be in a few short years. Then they'll be worth nothing .

Looney, I feel exactly the same way. How comforting to know I am not alone. I have even replaced two older games I lost after loaning them out (never again) but have never replayed any of them. I keep thinking...someday I am going to play these again.

I DON"T keep my games- the minute I am done with it it's up for trade!!
The only ones that are keepers are Zork Grand Inquisitor and Sanitarium- they are my faves. I very rarely replay them , but I keep them so I can force friends and family to try them!

I've gotten rid of games as soon as I'm done, thinking I'm done and won't replay. And funny enough, I've had to go and re-buy them, just because I might want to try them again! I don't tho, I just think I might!

Looney just hit the correct button for me. There have been at least three games that I played and enjoyed, then sold. A year or so later I had a sudden wierd urge to play them again and had to rebuy them. I loved buying those games the first time, and for some reason I resented buying them the second time. Now I will get rid of a game only if I'm absolutely sure that I disliked it so completely that I could never possibly desire to play it again. (PENUMBRA was actually the only game I've gotten rid of in the last several years.)

Laziness, Looney, sheer laziness. It's easier to keep them than get rid of them.

They show where I've been. And who knows? I might want to go back at almost any moment.

Sold the original Scratches, rebought the new edition since I couldn't stop thinking about some parts of it. I will never sell my Tex Murphy games, my Journeyman games, my Syberias, Post Mortem and Still Life, Ripper (even though I still haven't gotten one of my PCs fixed so it will play in XP or Vista) Jonathan Boakes games, Amber, The Carol Reed games, TLJ or Dreamfall (even though DF ALMOST got sold before I finished it) and a few others I will promptly remember when I'm not here.

Because I am a pack rat. Plain and simple.

I watch my favorite movies over and over so......I play my favorite games over and over.

That rings a bell with me, Joe--also I read my favorite books over and over. But as far as replaying games, I haven't yet managed to get through all of the ones I have.

Actually, I have some that are so old I don't even have a computer they would play on--but who knows what old treasure life might throw my way...

Like most everyone else posting here, I keep games because I do replay them. I'll play pretty much every game twice, sometimes more if I love it (like The Longest Journey).

Same games (like Myst) I have replayed more than once already, but doubt I'll every play them again, but I still hold onto them for sentimental reason. I just can't get rid of them.

Only games I get rid of are ones that I just really didn't like & know I'll never play again, or ones that just won't run on a new computer with a new OS.

friends that make me feel comfortable, surrounded by
things that I like, whether I replay them or not. Some I
do, some I don't, but knowing that I could replay them
at any time always makes me feel like I at least have the option.
I love having lots of choices.

looney - that's a good question! I really don't know. As others I seldom play a game twice because I remember too well how the puzzles go. And having XP and maybe soon Vista, I can't play older games no more. But they are shelved and they stay there until eternity

Same reason I keep books. I like to re-read good books, and I like to replay too. Well, that's what I TELL myself, but there are so many new ones coming out all the time I hardly ever replay. The Longest Journey I played twice. I played through Syberia I and II individually as they came out, then did a marathon. Otherwise they just sit there.

I really should just give some of the ones I'm too scared to play away. :|

This is a funny question. Like books or DVDs (or even VHS tapes!) there are certain games I always keep and others I get rid of. "Discworld Noir" always remains part of my collection, as does "Zork Grand Inquisitor" and "Longest Journey." I also keep "Outcast", "Mafia" and "Vampire: Bloodlines" in my drawer. I haven't played any of those games in years, but I like having them there. Don't ask me why.

I have 3 separate binders for all of my games. (I think I have about a hundred now)

One is for games that I will NEVER get rid of. One is for games I'd only get rid of for a really good deal. The last one is for games that I'd be willing to trade or sell.

I do replay games all the time as I re-read books over and over also.

I have a hard time getting rid of games in the first time simply because I worry that I'll want to play them again and be out of luck. I've done that with Paradise, wish I still had that one.

I used to keep all my played games. I just couldn't give them up. Recently, I have been trying to get rid of the clutter in my house. I donated all my old games to the local public library. They are put to good use and if I ever get the urge to replay one, I with just withdraw it from the library. They also have many games that I have not played. Kay

Oooo, Looney, I'm pleased to see that I am not alone...I just CAN'T get rid of any of my games, they are part of me.
I well remember before I joined Gameboomers and discovered just how many games there were out there and also the delights of on-line shopping, how difficult it was getting hold of new games to play, there didn't seem to be that many adventure games about and I used to haunt our local 'Game' store here in England waiting patiently for a new game to be released.

So...in answer to your question, I reckon it's 'FEAR' that makes me hang on to them all. Fear that I will be left with nothing to play.
And who knows?...when I eventually do aquire grandchildren, maybe I can inspire another generation to love the games I get so much pleasure out of...by the time that happens I will probably be able to teach them the entire history of adventure games.
