And the Best Game Is...................? - 12/10/07 11:59 AM

It's basically impossible to decide this, so I'm fudging it a bit. The game that I live in and enjoy the most is Myst Online: Uru Live. But I know that's partly because of the people in it, not just the game.

Single player -- still thinking about it after all these years. Shadow of Destiny.

It's very hard to tell, but probably Anachronox (being more adventure than many of so called adventure games).

my favourite adventure games are
lure of the temptress
flight of the amazon queen
6th sense investigations (only available for the amiga 1200)

i played them without needing a walkthrough and this for me is a sign of a really good adventure game as it shows that the puzzles are logical

i have played them over and over again and have just started lure again catrub

My favourite game ever??? I;d think it still has to be Riven. I wish I could play it for the first time again. That and Gabriel Knight: The beast Within.

I cannot name only one - of course the very first computer game I ever played will always hold a very special place in my heart/head and that is Beyond Time! And in my list of mostest favoritist games would be URU, and Around The World In 80 Days, and several others whose names at the moment escape me....(I'll come back here and add them if/when I think of it/them)

Re: And the Best Game Is...................? - 12/10/07 04:56 PM

I would totally agree Betty Lou, it's hard to pick just one game as the best .... but if I was really pressed I would have to say The Longest Journey. It was the first computer game I played, and unfortunately I often compare the way I felt playing that game to how I feel playing a new game. Lots just don't compare. Some that did are Riven and Keepsake. I like games that are visually attractive - make you want to just walk around and enjoy the scenery as well as play the game.

Re: And the Best Game Is...................? - 12/10/07 05:06 PM

The Broken Sword series wil always have a place on my hard drive, along with Fahrenheit and Still Life - trouble is (despite my post), there are just too many good games out there.

I've been messing around with computers for about 10 years, and I believe that we are now in the Golden Age of Adventure Gaming thumbsup

I have to agree with Wysewomom.RIVEN is still the best game made.
I wish i could take a pill and forget everything i
know about the game[maybe not the marble puzzle] but all
the rest of the game.
Who knows at this point in my life i might not like it now????

Re: And the Best Game Is...................? - 12/10/07 05:15 PM

I will be unfair to the many games which i liked but my favourite Adv Game was Still Life. I loved the investigations and the storyline and was disappointed a bit with the end. Now that the news arrived that the sequel is in production a wish came true. I just hope the sequel is as good as the first one with the same atmosphere and an equally strong storyline. The fact that i am only 22 means that i haven't played some of the older adv games which were released and many people liked.

I'd have to say "Post Mortem and Still Life" are my favorites. Great storyline and graphics. Glorius news about "Still Life 2".

Re: And the Best Game Is...................? - 12/10/07 06:46 PM

It's impossible to choose a favourite but amongst them are the 1st two Gabriel Knight games, the 1st two Broken Sword games, The Longest Journey, Dreamfall, Fahrenheit, both Syberia games & I always seem to forget about this one mentioned by you Becky earlier, Shadows of Memories (or Destiny in the US)- it is an interesting & unusual game which I loved - wish there had been some sequels.

Myst or RealMyst. I played the original one way back when it came out. I still love to go back to it for the music and ambiance.

The best adventure game ever is Azrael's Tear.

Also, I read Butcher's post above and I want it to be illegal for anyone to be 22.

Re: And the Best Game Is...................? - 12/10/07 07:33 PM

smile I'll add two favorites. URU may be the prettiest game ever made and Drowned God may be the most unique.

When I was 22 I was still trying to figure out how a slide-rule worked. (If someone is 22 he has no clear idea what that is!)

Boy, isn't that the truth--I was amazed to discover that my electrical engineer grandson didn't even know what a slide rule was!!

As for favorite games, it's pretty hard to pick, but GK2 and the Syberia games are right up at the top of the list...yay

Re: And the Best Game Is...................? - 12/10/07 08:18 PM

Black Mirror, for its gripping story and atmosphere, the final stunning twist in the tale - and all that rain. Boy, did it rain.

Still Life, for its suspense, its powerful plot, its fiendish puzzles and its wonderful characters.

Too many favourites to mention!

Re: And the Best Game Is...................? - 12/10/07 09:08 PM

I have several favorites, but if I had to pick just one, I would have to say Gabriel Knight The Beast Within, the reason being that the entire time is still so vivid in my mind; it made a very big impression. Most games, after a few years, I only retain rather spotty recollections of. wave

Ray, Azrael's Tear is way up there on my list, too. I think some adventure gamers might have been put off by what seems like a strange interface initially, but it is such a good game. A way-underrated adventure game. And it runs well now under the latest build of DOSBox. smile

Here's a good review of it for anyone who might be interested:

My all time favourite is Discworld (the first one), hence my Gameboomers name. That game had me in stitches and the voice of Eric Idle as Rincewind was perfect casting.

Re: And the Best Game Is...................? - 12/10/07 10:36 PM

I was just thinking of starting a thread about your favorite Adventure game that few gamers know, or your favorite "bad" game. Then RayBres and Marian suggest Azrael's Tear. That was my pick for a favorite that few gamers know. I second their comments.
My favorite "bad" game is Missing. I just loved the odd puzzles, the Internet searching and the movies. And the e-mails. Lots of fun.

For me the best games probably have to be the Monkey Island games.

(btw, Becky I am excited to finally begin playing Shadow of Destiny, due to your excitement and discussion of the game in the past. Thanks for the recommendation.)

Sob. Sniff. You say sooth, Maid Marian!

Sob. Sniff. After all these years, someone who's actually played AT and agrees with me. Sob. Sniff. I can't go on..... bravo

Re: And the Best Game Is...................? - 12/11/07 02:41 PM

It is easier to say the worst game then the best game.
There are so many good games!!

The first game i ever played was "the riddle of master Lu" and i loved it.
That's why i got interested in adventure games. It will always be my favourite.

Not easy to choose the best game but Syberia I and II and the Journeyman projects are definately on my list. And the Zork's.

Suddenly the memories come flooding back. The best game of all time, hard to say. Tex Murphy Under a Killing Moon probably. Oh, but The Secret of Monkey Island was what got me hooked. Zork Grand Inquisitor DVD version was magnificent. And Gabriel Knight, oh yes. And Diskworld Noir. The Longest Journey is one of the best games in years. Huhm, I'll have to check out some of the others mentioned here.

Re: And the Best Game Is...................? - 12/11/07 11:39 PM

I have a list of my ten favorites. Replayed GK 1 and 2 and said wow again! Replayed Dreamfall in spite of the horrible controls and the useless waste of time fighting. Still it managed to stay on the list. where? who knows but below those mentioned above. Then there came along one heck of a surprise Culpa Innata and that goes close to the top. In fact I wrestled with saying, "right there with GK1." Perhaps it is time will tell. But then after five years or so of serious neglect I pulled TLJ off the shelf. Actually a newer dvd version and WOW! that game smokes. Quite honestly it blows everything away. If it only had the character graphics that Dreamfall has. Voice acting, graphics of the day and story. Where do you get such a well written detailed story? How many TLJ characters just grab you? Too many to mention. I have to say it still has that wow factor after ten years. So for me TLJ hands down well ahead of everything else. With GK 1 perhaps 2 taking the next two spots. I loved Syberia 1, 2 was ok but came up short of 1. As good as Syberia is I don't "feel" the awe or experience the rich in depth characters found in TLJ.

I love Grim Fandango, and a close second is Return to Zork. They are some of the first adventure games on the pc I played and I just love the humor in them.

Tex Murphy and Broken Sword as these and Sanatorium were the fist games I ever played and the first time is always the best in my books .There are also a lot of newer games Darkness Within Dreamfall but these will never be the same as the first ever ones I played

Re: And the Best Game Is...................? - 12/12/07 06:18 AM

Well, I gotta say I love, love, love, The Last Express. Definitely my favorite.

Also, I am ashamed to admit I have an unplayed copy of TLJ. Had it for five years now...just never motivated to play it, even though everyone seems to love it.

But I would never trade or sell it! I guess I feel if I play it and love it, then that wonderful FIRST TIME magic will be gone. And if I hate it, everyone will call me insane! LOL

Re: And the Best Game Is...................? - 12/12/07 02:42 PM

NO no no ! The best games are Sanitarium and Zork Grand Inquisitor!
( but what do I know- I think I am the only person who doesnt like TLJ and Darkness Within!)

Re: And the Best Game Is...................? - 12/12/07 04:15 PM

I'm not much of an "adventure" gamer, but if I had to pick a favorite in that category, I'd have to say Myst.

I like Action/RPG's the best. For those, I would have to say that the ones that have left the deepest impression are Stonekeep, Tombraider, and Zelda. To me, the way those games captured my imagination is the "standard" to which I hold all other games. For Tomb Raider and Zelda, I have enjoyed every one I have played (some more than others), but it was the originals that really grabbed me.

The best game?
Humour: rotfl Broken Sword 1, and a wonderfull
atmosphere.( Great voices!) Also Zork inquisitor comes high on my list, a very funny game.

Painful lonelyness: sad and scared
(what makes a real horror,
real spooky game for me, as it comes close to the real thing,
I think ghostly appearences are the remnants of
sad emotions left behind. (if youre lucky! evil)
In Blackstone Chronicles (you can feel the icy cold, eek
thanks to the voice-acting of the father type. What a voice!)
If I were a woman...
Also Darkfall 1 (it is easy to recognize that Jonathan
is a real Ghosthunter!)
And Black Mirror. In that order to me at least.

A game cannot get get to dark for me,
my nightmare's are still worse, so these kind
of games are relaxing to me personally! evil
(Don't worry, I am only partly devil ish!)
But I need to feel that the games are being made with love, wink That is, that the creators know about the
world they are making. Great graphics are a bonus.
Quoting Bruce Lee (one of my heroes):
"You got to feeeeel!! shame Or you will miss all that
heavenly glory!"
