Famous Adventure Tricks - 02/15/08 08:49 PM

I've been an adventure gamer for as long as i remember playing games and i realize that many "tricks" in these games are almost the same. So when you learn a trick ones you may think to use it on the next game etc. For example the tricks that can easily remember are the following:
1) Locked doors: Look at keyhole (there is a key), put a piece of paper or newspaper under the door, put a pencil in the keyhole to push the key to fall on the paper and then you can take the paper and the key (some times it works some times it don't)
2) To open metal doors or unscrew a screw etc always put some oil or grease on it so you can do it easier and not be heard.

There are many others...
What are the common tricks that you remember seeing in your adventure gaming? grin

Hi Volkana

I don't know if this is a trick...But looking for cracks in windows..especially if when you click on a window & it says the window is jammed....

I usually search the doors & windows really good..

That locked door trick is a classic, I can't begin to count how many games feature that. And here's some general advice:

1. Pick up virtually anything that isn't nailed down, because you just never know when you might need it: dead porcupines.. empty milk bottles.. matchbooks.. visiting cards.. they all have their uses, you just don't have the foggiest notion exactly why yet.

2. Rattle every doorknob, try every window, examine every loose floorboard, jiggle every cupboard and drawer. Leave nothing unrattled, unexamined or unjiggled.

3. If you should happen to see a strange symbol, word or sentence written on a wall/piece of paper/in a book you can't otherwise steal - make a note of it, you'll be bound to need it later on. If you don't, by the time you need it you'll have forgotten where you originally saw it. Cue much swearing and gnashing of teeth.

It's really amazing how our adventure heroes can use everything from garbage to make... well... something useful. And they can't be stopped by walls or windows or doors... NO! They can burst in every single building. Just give them a stick, a card a crowbar... anything. They can do it rotfl
You are absolutely right Rushes for all 3

And when I have clicked on, shook, rattled, picked up, combined, read, wrote down everything I have seen, am seeing and thought I saw...

and before I curse, thrown something, quit, tear my hair out, etc. etc. etc. .......

My trick is to find the walkthrough from here, usually from MaG... lol and do whatever it say no matter how crazy it would seem in real life!!!

I've learned to try to inspect everything from the inventory, and also to try to combine every thing--often it's very weird, but sometimes it works wave

Umbrellas are always useful for pulling down fire escape ladders.

Credit cards, or anything similarly shaped, are also great for wiggling open locked doors.

Adventure game tricks, heh...Click on anything that looks remotely suspiciously out of place. Hey, is that a piece of splinter sticking out of the wood? It's a key! I'm a very bad pixel hunter. frown

Volkana/ If you want big pockets, look no further than the Monkey Island series - hehe, where were you putting THAT Guybrush?

It really boggles the mind that everybody seem to want to lock a door with a key and leave the key there. razz It's almost like they want you to get out.

Crowbars and ropes--what would adventure gamers do without them? lol

My special favorite was using a frozen worm to open a door in Tony Tough and the Night of the Roasted Moths...rotfl

Funny though, isn't it - our hero/heroine sets out on his/her quest to do some big-time adventuring - and they "forget" EVERYTHING that could be useful to them. No pocketknife, no matches, no money even. Pockets full of zilch. Then it's "Oh shucks, I really need such-and-such, now where might I find it?" The end result is me shouting at my monitor: "You should have thought of that before you left home, you great nit!"

Then Arthur Dent brings along pocket fluff. Pocket fluff!

"It always seem like I could use a few hundred pieces of eight on my adventures."

You're kidding? A frozen worm? rotfl

I did remember one more trick and i also use it recently. It's the one you take a simple bottle of the garbage and you make an excellent wine or champagne by putting things in it (for bribing different characters usually drunkers). In the last game i played, i put a strawberry ice cream in the bottle to make the liquid inside look like wine. An expensive one...

Not kidding at all--
Click to reveal..
there was a sort of shack that you needed to get into, and the only way to do it was to freeze the worm and use it to poke in the keyhole and open the door!

It was a really fun game, if you like your puzzles slightly weird. I know it drove some very logical type gamers crazy...lol

Re: Famous Adventure Tricks - 02/17/08 02:03 PM

How about doors that always open away from you no matter which direction you're coming from. And a crowbar should always be in your inventory by default.

Re: Famous Adventure Tricks - 02/17/08 05:10 PM

Crowbars, rusty pipes etc... I can even remember how many times i used a crowbar or something similar to open a door, a window, a crate. Very useful indeed...
The new one in this category was the frozen worm that is mentioned above. I just can't forget about it... lol
