Good beginner game? - 02/26/07 01:26 AM

I ask this question a couple years ago trying to get a friend interested in adventure games.
At that time Amerizone was everyones pick of a easy ,but interesting game.
With all the games that have come out since, what do you think a good starter game would be.
I think Scratches might be good.

I think that Syberia makes an excellent first adventure game. Puzzles are not too difficult and it is gorgeous graphically. thumbsup

Hi smile

Quite a few of the earlier Nancy Drews would suit a beginner I think - unless of course the beginner is a Macho Male type lol lol

Cheers.

Ron, How about Zork Grand Inquisitor and/or Grim Fandango? Both are easy to moderate difficulty and they are both very entertaining - I think they would be good starter AG's....

I agree with Monkey..........Syberia..Is the Best start Up game...Puzzles are easy...No Big Glitch problem...Just a Nice Game thumbsup

Edit: Grim Fandango needs some Tweaking...So You basicly have to watch which games are going to play on XP ..without too much tweaking wave

How about Secret Files Tunguska? It is new, it is sleek, and it is interesting right from the start, provided you don't mind that the main character is a teenage girl. She is a bit whiny.

The game helps beginning players in a big way by having a help function that, when activated, points out all the hot spots in every scene.

Aztec (AKA The Sacred Amulet) and Road to India are two of the easiest games I've found.

Rhem would be a good beginner game. No timed puzzles and lots of exploring. Rhem and Rhem2 are both at Target for $9.99 in Jewel cases.

Yes Pokey Road to India might be good.
Gerry i think if i played Rhem for my first game i would not have played another.
I think they are HHHHHHHHHHHard games.
This person i am trying to win over would NOT have the patients to play this type game.
Grim would also be to hard.
Syberia might be good.Thanks everyone..
Still open for more......... wave

Hi ron.etti, if you want to get your friend interested in playing adventure games without spending money he/she might regret if they don't care for them, check out the Free Games Galore site here. There are lots of free adventure games on there that your friend might like. Dead City comes to mind. I'm playing The Prodigal Son at the moment which is pretty good.

That way they're not out any money and if they decide they do like them they'll want to play whatever they can get their hands on. Hope this helps. wave

I started out with Syberia- 1 and 2--- I just finished Amerzone last night---liked that too. But Sybera is really a good one to start with.

Personally, I recommend Trilby series, freeware.

At first, try his 1st. game [5 days a stranger].

After that, if you like, try 3 more series in that homepage.

I would also agree with the Nancy Drew games, maybe on Junior level?

Dracula Resurrection was the first game I played without need to peek at a walkthrough, so that might be a fun choice. Also Return to Mysterious Island, which had beautiful graphics and lots of inventory items to play with.

I agree with Rushes. Nancy Drew (junior level). Return to Mysterious Island. Both fun games and pretty easy. welcome

Re: Good beginner game? - 02/27/07 01:10 AM

I usually give people I want to play adventure games one of the following::

a Nancy Drew series title, Syberia 1, Darkfall, Myst trilogy (okay so its not as easy as the others but you can take your time), Monkey Island series, Grim Fandango, or Uru. Uru doesn't get tough puzzle-wise until Kadish

One of the limitations has to be which ones you have extra or can get new at the time (if its a present). Amerzone, Journeyman Project, Zork:GI, & realMyst are lovely choices too but they are hard to find now. Well Zork:GI & realMyst are on Gametap, but you know what I mean.

The new Sam & Max games will be great for beginners when they are finally available on disk.

Two of the easier and more fun games I played was Nancy Drew, Last Train to Blue Moon Canyon and Creature of Kapu Cave. I tend to be drawn to those games with brighter graphics.
It took me awhile to learn some of the gaming techniques and I still have a lot to learn. I think it also helps to know there's a walkthrough to peek at so one doesn't become totally discouraged, or asking for help in Hints.

I would suggest one of the Monkey Island games. Great puzzles and lots of humor. Discworld or Simon the Sorcerer would be good too. happydance

Re: Good beginner game? - 02/28/07 12:05 AM

It depends some on what hardware your friend has Ron. If the game won't run, it won't help. It also depends on taste. Sci-Fi, fantasy, mystery, etc?

The only Nancy Drew game I tried was a "slide show" game. You know, the ones that pan ninety degrees when you click right or left. They confuse me sometimes where I'm at, and are visually disorienting. I don't recommend "slide show" games for new folks. Simple 2D point and click is much easier to navigate. I don't know what the newer Nancy Drew games are like.

A story Must be there to carry the flow of the puzzles. It can get very boring otherwise.

Of those I've played lately, I'd rate Road to India first, with Syberia a close second for new adventure gamers. Flight of the Amazon Queen (a freebie nowdays) is also worth considering. Its a Monkey Island clone if I ever saw one, and "The Secret of Monkey Island" is what got me hooked on adventure games.

I would also vote for Siberia as one of the best starter games.

Another great starter, if you can find it, is the one I started on; Beyond Atlantis. thumbsup

I think he's saying that Syberia might spoil him in terms of other adventure games in that they won't be all of the same caliber. wave
