Realms of the Haunting/Outcast - 02/22/03 09:54 PM

Could someone plese give me your opinion of these games please. I am looking for a new game to play and GoGamer has Outcast for under $10 and ROTH for under $2. Is ROTH a combat game? I am not a combat fan. The puzzle games are my favorite.Thanks. wave

Hiya !

Only play 'Outcast' if you don't mind easy combat. It is very much a proper adventure though. It's in my top 5 games ever without a doubt, and I don't like combat games. It's a sprawling adventure with a good story and fantastic symphonic music throughout . . not like 'Ring' . . lighter. I absolutely love it. The puzzles are in the form of tasks and there's plenty of them combined with lots of very interesting characters to talk to. You can wander anywhere you like via portals and on your 'ride'.

At $10 that's about the going rate for the UK too and. like ROTH, there are plenty about on eBay and GameTZ. Hope you try it !

Byee !

You can get ROTH for $1.90 on GoGamer.com and it's
a super game.

Hi.

Yes, these are two excellent games and well worth the prices you are quoting <img border="0" title="" alt="[Cool]" src="cool.gif" />

In my opinion though Outcast has quite a lot of combat (for a puzzle or adventure game player anyway) even if the combat isn't too difficult.

And I would describe Realms of the Haunting as Action/Adventure. It's certainly not a puzzle game in the sense that 7th guest, for example, was a puzzle game rolleyes

[Just thought I'd offer my opinion laugh ]

Cheers.

With Outcast, ss far as I could tell, from the start of the game (I've only been through one gate), it seems to be similar to Dragonriders of Pern. (Or, for those who know Outcast, and not Dragonriders, Dragonriders is quite remeniscent of Outcast! smile , especially in the 'easy combat' and task-oriented puzzles area)

Outcast is interesting from a technical perspective because of the reasonably organic ground textures... not your normal polygon map!

I'd certainly agree that it is worth about $10 - possibly a bit more. However, I have yet to complete it, as I have a number of other games to play at the moment... smile

I have played both games. I am just in the beginning of ROTH and a little stuck. The game has a dark moody look to it and seems good so far. It has a number of fans here at GB.

Outcast is the game that showed me that a hybrid game could be a wonder. You can edit your game files (and if I can do it - any one can) to give your character very high health and extremely powerful ammo. What I did was to get rid of all the soldiers first and then rambled about to my hearts content in each world. Outcast is a huge game environmentally. You can go everywhere. The residents of each place are charming to say the least. Amazing musical score also. The game has been labeled everything from a FPS (it is much more than that - much more) to a hybrid or whatever. Despite the trouble pigeon holing this game, I think Outcast is one of the best games I have ever played. I cared so much about all the all the characters in this game. Also has some of the funniest dialogue out there. One scene in particular that deals with the mating rituals of the inhabitants had me rolling. lol

Outcast has a god mode, which makes combat very easy. You can just run up to your enemies and beat them senseless with your fists, which saves on ammo.

Realms of the Haunting does not have a god mode.

You might try both, since ROTH is so cheap. If you had to choose either/or, I'd say go with Outcast.

Hi again.

Phew !!
I wish I'd known about those cheats when I was playing Outcast myself frown

My previous comments in this thread are definitely redundant in the light of THAT information lol

Cheers.

Awww Sorry Mad,

If I had known you were playing Outcast - I would have shipped over the cheat edit steps. frown

Anyway - whatever you have to say would never be redundant - not if it's your opinion. smile

Re: Realms of the Haunting/Outcast - 02/24/03 10:03 PM

I tried Outcast, and got frustrated right away in the 'training' mission at the begining. I did like the look and feel of the game, and the few characers I had met up to that point. I quit shortly after starting the training part, and never went back to it.

Maybe I need to give it another try. If I do, I'll be sure to find out how to edit those files or turn on 'god' mode. I stink so bad at action/skill/reflexes type games that it isn't funny! (which then leads to total frustration!)

The bizarre thing about Outcast is that, by design, the combat at the beginning of the game is more difficult than later on. The enemies are tougher and more numerous until you start weakening them through plot-driven means. Extremely curious choice. So by all means, anyone struggling with it might want to use some cheats, at least at first.

ROTH I'd call equal parts adventure and first person shooter (yes, FPS). There are no codes, true, but there are difficulty settings for both the combat and puzzle aspects.

Only played outcast a little, but Realms of the Haunting is the in my opinion best game ever. Action/Adventure/Puzzle in a nice mix.
