The Adventure Company forums - 07/09/04 09:33 PM

What happened to your post MAG? I typed up my reply and when I submitted it, it was gone!

Anyway, The Adventure Company Forums appear to have been closed:

My reply to MAG's announcement is this:

I just noticed that as well, and headed over here to talk about my disappointment.

I must say that The Adventure Company, while putting out quite a few good games, has pretty much been a constant source of varying levels of disappointment to me.

It seems like all they were able to do was tell us to turn down our video and sound acceleration on our computers, which was never really a "solution" in my mind. More of a "workaround" if you ask me.

And now they've taken away what was, for me, one of the best resources for communicating with other customers of theirs who were having problems with their games. Other customers and gameplayers seemed to be the best way to solve some of the problems that TAC did their best to ignore, and even that avenue of help has disappeared.

I'm really starting to think that instead of buying games by TAC in the future as soon as they're released, I'll be waiting several weeks to see what pops up in our Gameboomers forums and other places on the web as to whether or not the game has annoying bugs and glitches that I'd rather not put up with.

Sigh.

Re: The Adventure Company forums - 07/09/04 10:00 PM

Yes, I'm also a 'transfer' from the TAC forums; and just registered my same user name in this forum, today. I felt quite alone for awhile, as I didn't see any posts around that talked about the forum disappearing! Those of us who utilized the Private Messages option appear to have lost access to our stored messages forever. But hopefully, when TAC re-opens the limited use forum next week -- they'll (at least) allow former members (and former 'loyal customers'?) to access our stored PMs and save the ones we want to keep to our computers.

By the way, the DreamCatcher forums may also be closed now -- but I'm not sure about this. I couldn't open pages from the Main Index page, but it may just be my browser settings. I had difficulty opening the page to register HERE, also. So if the DC forum IS still open, I hope someone will post about that.

TAC should have given us notice that this was going to happen. I did have a strong feeling that it might happen, due to the sudden disappearance of any TAC staff posting replies there. I'm extremely disappointed in them, for treating long-time customers and forum members so poorly.

Re: The Adventure Company forums - 07/09/04 10:11 PM

I noticed while browsing the Aura forum that several posters were getting quite bold in what they talked about. The one guy went so far as to post that he downloaded Aura for free and mentioned the method he did it and how to obtain files.

I really wouldn't be surprised if TAC just got sick of their own forums being used against them.

Plus, this way they don't have to pay someone to moderate the forums. Oh, well.

Auntie Shoque, I took it out to see what other info, I can get first.

In whatever form a forum is started - it is in some part with the intention of helping.
Any forum closing is a sad affair, one less resource for its members.

There's too many things we don't know yet and speculating will not help. Let us leave it at that. smile

Hi guys,

I'm also a TAC departure, i became a member her a while ago, i didn't post here a lot, i hope that's a nice place to be.

Katsmom nice to see another member from TAC here, I'm not alone YEAH, I'm only joking here, I'm sure that there is other TAC members around.

I was online when the TAC forums closed, i got logout and when i went back i had a nice message telling me that the forums were closed, at that time i send an e-mail to the customer services and they replied to me, here what they had to say:

Dear Dany,

Unfortunately The Adventure Company Forums have been closed, as stated
on the website they will be reopened as a read-only database. We have
decided that our games can be more effectively supported directly
through our technical support and customer service departments.
Unfortunately forum private messages are no longer retrievable. I
apologize for any inconvenience this many cause you and if you have any
further questions please do not hesitate to contact me.

Thank you for contacting DreamCatcher Games and The Adventure Company.

I've been a member of TAC forums for a few years, but started only going there sporadically when I discovered Gameboomers, a much better source for info and some of the best people around. smile

I didn't know they closed the forum until I saw this thread!

welcome Katsmom and to all the TAC members! Glad you joined us. smile

Re: The Adventure Company forums - 07/10/04 04:24 AM

Without the desire to start any form of a debate, I just wanted to say that despite all the flaws in some of TAC's games I think we need to remember the good points:

I'm thankful for the fact that TAC still makes adventure games in a day and age when they are far and few between.

I do not blame them for closing the forum because it was no longer what it was intended to be. It was supposed to be a place to chat and have fun and share your love of adventure games and instead became a place to hang their dirty laundry for the world to see. How many companies can you think of would have a customer complaints dept in full view of the world?

I hope they rethink the way they handle some of their games and people can and should voice their opinions to them but they are not alone in the fact that some of their games do not work on all computers. I have had at least a dozen others from different companies that I have not been able to get to run and the company is not giving me my money back.

I'd like to see us constructively criticize and in the same breath support those that still try and give us the genre that we enjoy. And to top it off, they tend to reasonably price their games as well.

Please do not chastise them to a point that they will no longer produce adventure games.

Just my opinion and I do not mean to upset anyone.

Hi again guys,

You're right BrownEyedTigre, my post was very negative, let me make this one more positive, i enjoyed Syberia 1, Dark Fall 1 (and I'm waiting for Dark Fall 2), ROTS 1 was great, the Dracula series was also great, i even enjoyed Black Mirror (even with the minor problems, i don't want to be seen like i despite TAC games, I'm also looking forward for the Agatha Christie games that will be release by TAC.

TAC only publish the games, they're not responsible for all of the flaws, i have almost all of their games and was satisfied, with a lot of the titles they published.

Sorry about my negativity, i will behave in the future.

I edited my first post and erased the negative part in it.

Thank you Melanie for the warm welcome.

Re: The Adventure Company forums - 07/10/04 05:08 AM

I didn't really intend for my post to sound completely negative either. TAC distributes some pretty good games. My beef with them is their customer service. It's rather spotty, as near as I can tell.

Even telling us that they have problems getting patches produced or admitting that they were having problems figuring problems out would have been more desireable than their standard "lower your acceleration" replies that they always posted. I found it especially interesting that they would do the standard reply even if someone obviously knowledgable of computers posted everything they had tried and it still didn't work.

And I don't actually blame them for closing down the forums, considering the posts that were showing up there over the past several months. It just doesn't really do anything to strengthen their image as far as customer service is concerned.

Re: The Adventure Company forums - 07/10/04 07:44 AM

Ana, thank you for reminding us of the droughts we've had with good adventure games in the past. It's very true that we shouldn't denigrate TAC too badly. You made a very good point about showcasing their customer complaints also. I can't think of any other companies that do that. It's not good business.

While I've never been satisfied with their level of customer service (their standard form letter replies really annoyed me), they're not the only software publishers with that problem and they do publish a LOT of good adventure games. Perhaps part of the reason for them having so many problems is that they publish so many games.

Besides, we can usually get all the tech support we need from our game geniuses here. smile

We all get frustrated & sometimes need to vent, Danyboy & Auntieshoque, so don't worry about it. We're glad you're here.

Wow! Thank you to everyone who posted, to welcome me to this forum. thanks

*I'm so happy that I finally found the SMILEYS!*

I miss my avatar, but they tell me I can have one here when I've made 10 posts...

I understand the comments made about going easy on TAC, regarding the problems with recent games. I wouldn't want to see them go out of business either. But they've lost my trust now, because of what happened yesterday.

My unhappiness with TAC is due to the way that they closed the forum. They COULD have given us some warning, or prepared us. They COULD have given us a chance to exchange e-mail addresses; to save messages in our PM mailboxes; to save favorite threads to our computers; to get used to the idea that the forum was closing! Why didn't they do this? I simply don't understand how the staff of TAC could treat loyal customers of theirs so badly. rolleyes

I'm very happy to be here, and in time I know I'll feel better about all this. But each time I read a game box that says "from The Adventure Company" on it -- the memory of July 9, 2004 will come back to me. Will it stop me from buying their games? I don't know. Time will tell...

Re: The Adventure Company forums - 07/10/04 09:03 AM

well let me give you a bit of background, not on TAC forums, but in a similar vein.

I used to 'work' as a volunteer moderator on virgin.net's own sites, they decided it just wasn't feasible to keep the forums running as there were many other sites which covered the same things. We all had a big leaving party online, advising the members the site was going. It is very difficult to look after a discussion forum, you are always balancing on a tightrope, trying to keep the chat going without being too biased or letting tempers get in the way.

As for the support for games, as my family play many diverse genres, I can tell you it isn't only one company who have problems!! Got Rise of Nations Thrones and Patriots for Hubby as a Fathers day pressie and it won't even run on his pc!!! It works fine on mine but can you find a decent patch or help on setting it up??? Nope!! That was released by quite a big company too lol

Re: The Adventure Company forums - 07/10/04 09:31 AM

Looks like we're 'cross-posting' between two threads about TAC, tigger. Now I know that yes, you ARE a moderator here. I'm sure not used to chatting with a moderator at this hour! scared
Posted By: tigger

Re: The Adventure Company forums - 07/10/04 09:39 AM

well it was us Mods who decided to make a big party out of it when Virgin went... they were Our forums so I suppose it was different in that respect.

Maybe the staff weren't allowed to say anything, so if they chose to comment well and good, but otherwise it could have been out of their control so let's not give em too much grief smile
Posted By: gatorlaw

Re: The Adventure Company forums - 07/10/04 09:58 AM

I would have agree that it is likely the presence of mods like Tigger at the virgin site - that set things up in an orderly way.

The TAC forums were left to run along, almost by themselves. Not necessarily the exisitng TAC mods fault, you can only do so much with a handful of people at a very busy site.

Re: The Adventure Company forums - 07/10/04 10:00 AM

No problem with that. I don't blame the TAC staff who regularly posted with us in the forum. As I said over there -- with one possible exception, the TAC/DC staff members were always extremely warm and courteous (IMO). thumbsup I know they would have said something if they could have. And it's possible that even THEY didn't know, until it happened.

The decision to dump us without warning came from higher up -- and I only hope that ONE day, we'll find out why it had to happen the way it did.

Trust me i know...this is the first place i go before i get a game and after! One thing i do have to say...Dreamcatcher/The Adventure Co. does not have good support for the games they release. i have never been able to figure out why either, it is not a new problem - has gone on for years. Hi guys,

No problemo, Ana, i prefer to call you Ana if you don't mind, it's more easy for a French Canadian like me.

Yes i was mad yesterday, i was a member of the TAC forums almost since the beginning, i saw TAC evolution over those years and when it started to grow and separate action from adventure, open a branch in Europe, a lot of those things take a lot of time, moderators were switching from action to adventure forums a lot of members to satisfy, I'm just wondering if they didn't became too big in a short amount of time.

I'm a member here since August 2003, i posted few times, I'm around this forums a lot of time, snooping around without posting.

Hi Logan -- it's great to 'see' you again. wave

IMO -- sometimes constructive criticism is warranted; and sometimes it helps to 'vent' in an appropriate way. It's not WHAT you say so much, as HOW you say it. The "how" part became a big problem in the TAC forum. Generally, the forum became tense and angry; and we lost our sense of playfulness and FUN. Again, just IMO.

I really think that if it weren't for MrLipid's research into getting Forever Worlds to run on Win 98, that TAC still wouldn't have a clue about how to handle the problems with it that occur on Win 98.

I checked the Tech forum over on the Dreamcatcher (action) side and they seem to be doing a wonderful job of ignoring requests for help over there. I wonder whether they're planning to close that forum down too.

In reference to danyboy's post

Some people felt that the games were going out TOO fast without the proper testing and a few people lost valuable information from their pcs.

I think that people have a right to constructive complaining. I also believe that if the problem is extensive, then they need to get in touch with the company, not the forum and the company has an obligation to help out. Then the forum should have a spot about certain problems with certain games and a quick fix (maybe under a tech support heading/ quick fix?) Check out herinteractive tech forum board. It's very good. And their tech support gets in touch with you right away. happydance

Okay, this is a question for the wonderful moderators at GB: <img border="0" alt="bravo" title="" src="graemlins/bravo.gif " />

Would it be possible to combine the two (or three) different threads that were started here in the Adventure Games Discussion forum, about The Adventure Company forums closing down, and all of us "orphans" being welcomed here at GB?

*wow, that was a long question...
Posted By: Jenny100

Re: The Adventure Company forums - 07/14/04 06:08 AM

I see options for "Close," "Feature topic," "Move," and "Delete," but nothing for combining threads. I suppose 2 of the threads could be closed with a link given for the other one in the final message. But is that really what you want?
Posted By: Katsmom

Re: The Adventure Company forums - 07/14/04 08:51 AM

I was just looking at the different 'TAC forum' topic threads -- and seeing one moving down the list, while another one stays current... and thought it would be nice to keep all the posts together.

Quote:
But is that really what you want?
But since you put it that way -- maybe not. oops

We "TAC orphans" are a bit sensitive to closed threads... Maybe someone else has an idea of what to do? While the topic stays current in one thread, one or more connected threads may get knocked off (so to speak).

Just wanted to say hello. I was just getting started good on the TAC forums and they got shut down. I spend most of my time on the computer in the early morning and early evening so I don't interact alot - there's not usually anyone online when I'm on. Seems like most people are on late at night. Right now I am playing the first Mysterious Journey game. I had to start over because our computer crashed. I'm glad I found the gameboomer forums - and even though I don't visit with them alot I'm glad to see names I recognize. happydance

Hi guys,

The message as been changed on the web page of the TAC forum, here is a copy and paste of what you're able to read:

The Adventure Company Forums have been closed. To support our customers better they will be reopened as a read-only, searchable database. We plan to move posts so the content is more relevant and ordered.

If you need technical support please fill out a support ticket at

Hi acc58!

--- --- Another TAC forum refugee has come to the GameBoomers doorstep.

I remember you from the TAC forum, acc58. And my computer crashed repeatedly, when I tried to play Schizm: Mysterious Journey. I still haven't played it.

Danyboy -- thank you for posting the message from the The Adventure Company forum. I'm glad they decided to add the LINKS to other adventure game forums. I would have liked to see a link to the Her Interactive forum for the Nancy Drew forum members also -- but hopefully, we've left enough of those links on the DreamCatcher boards; and the kids will find them.

BTW -- I wasn't able to see that message while logged in. But when I clicked on "New User" I saw the message screen you copied here...

So I guess all the individual threads about TAC will stay apart. Just like our forum members are scattered across the internet now...

Re: The Adventure Company forums - 07/17/04 02:43 AM

By the time I post this, I'll bet YOU'LL post that link, blsbet44! laugh

SP, I have an online web page; so if you decide you want to use your own avatar pic, let me know. wink

The link to Best Smileys is:

http://pages.prodigy.net/rogerlori1/emoticons/pageindex.htm

This has tons of gifs, and gives you the entire UBB code with tags, to copy.

There's also UBB Icons --

http://www.binaryrhyme.com/ubbicons/

All of their gifs are on one page (and small), so it's convenient; but you have to right-click on the gifs and copy the URLs, then use the IMAGE tags here in the forum, to make them display.

With dial-up internet service, these pages can take quite awhile to load; so it helps if you can save them in your web cache.

There are lots more sites, of course; these are just my personal favorites.

------------------------------------------

EDIT: Nope, I'm the first to post the links. thumbsup

SP -- it occurs to me that you might not know about the "long reply" option here, where you'll find lots of wonderful "Instant Graemlins" like we had in the TAC forum (except these are much better ones). Instead of replying with the white box you see at the bottom of the page -- look around there for a small "Reply" button, and click it. It'll take you to a new page, where you can type your reply WITH GameBoomers' smilies. <img border="0" alt="bravo" title="" src="graemlins/bravo.gif " />

What is this I read about Agatha Christie being released as a game, I loved the books and movies, TAC is doing this. I know they will do a good job. I have played many of their games and when I did have a problem, I emailed them and asked and did not put it on the forum, unless it was silly stuff. Can you tell me about the AC they are releasing and do you know anything about them or when they will be realeased.

Hello, everyone! Another tattered, barefoot refugee, shivering in the cold, staggering lonely up to the gate calling in a weak, quivering voice: "May I come in?" Over at DC I was Rainbow, but as there are many over here who have prior claim to the name, I am now called Vertex. (I'll have to find a good avatar somewhere!) I was also on the TAC since very near the beginning; few had more total posts than I. But if permitted, I humbly ask for a corner until I am deemed worthy to get out on the floor and dance. Luck was with me though I found you or at least some of you here at GB!!!
Luck smiled on me again when GB actually let me register...it wouldn't let me when I tried a few months ago.
The people here were so great they let me communicate through email to try and solve my mysterious journey problem with the gates. FYI I never did get it to work but the people here were so great it wasn't from their lack of trying.
Well, I'm glad everyone from TAC home have found their way to a new home and I might even stick around now that I'm registered!

I originally got it in one of those humorous e-mails that people send all over the net. Which means that lots of people have 'linked' directly to it. I just checked the website, and they don't seem to say for certain whether it's okay to link directly, or not. But I won't do that for anymore of their graphics!

Re: The Adventure Company forums - 07/26/04 12:24 PM

just changed the image
I am on photo bucket
It's fun

I also have a paint program. It can edit the picture. I am still working on the ins and outs but I think that I am getting the hang of it. (see above)
Thanks GB for telling us about this problem. I don't think that anyone meant any harm.

We're just HAPPY people and sometimes a smiley isn't enough. blush

Blsbet44, I didn't look to see your country so I don't know what may be available, but allow me to tell what fun I have with photosoftware called "FUNHOUSE". It has categories of templates so you can import a face from your photo files, insert it, enlarge or shrink or tilt to fit and cause it to look very, very real. I put a picture of my brother-in-law, (without his false teeth), on the head of a caveman and a professional wrestler. Then I sent it to his wife, of course! I commonly find really good deals like this (including serious photo software) at BEST BUYS' bargain/clearance rack.

The only trouble: I find it VERY hard to not abuse the FUNHOUSE stuff! evil

Thank you so much for the info on Funhouse. I will try and check it out. Like I said before, sometimes a smiley isn't enough.

Yup, that little girl looks ALOT like me. That's what I looked like when I was playing Ghost Dogs of Moon Lake and I went into the woods and found the cemetary.
You are going back to work? I'll thinko of you while I am at work. I'm a housewife now, so I guess I am always at work

Hey wait... I have a 13 year old?
Hey kid... get over here. Mommy needs a chocolate break.
Now where did I hide those Dove ice cream bars???

Blsbett44 RE: Hidden Dove Ice Cream bars. I'll tell you where if I can have one. OK?

Hmmmmm. One of the wee people told me it was cold, probably in the freezer!

Thanks for the Dove bar! wave

Hi blsbet44 and Vertex. scared

I had to laugh when I read your post, blsbet. Today, my daughter and her friend and I all cleaned the apartment. Said friend practically lives here, so it was natural for her to help us out... wink Housework is HARD work, blsbet!

Vertex -- I miss your old avatar. So much, that I found it somewhere (shhh! secret!) and SAVED it to my computer. I'm curious why you don't use it anymore, even though you can't use the name "Rainbow"?

Hi guys,

Blsbet44, I'm a little deceived of you, i always thought that you were a courageous woman, i just learn that you're a timorous, scared by the cemetery in GDOML, very hard to believe, that cemetery could have been a playground for kids.

It wasn't the cemetary that got to me, it was the HOWLING....The audio in that game gave me the creeps. wave

Re: The Adventure Company forums - 07/28/04 11:36 PM

Blsbet44, I like strawberry every now and then, but never coated in chocolate! Thanks, anyway.

Katsmom, I picked a stock avatar for the time being; something to represent "Vertex", which means: "noun (pl. vertices or vertexes) 1. the highest point; the top or apex. 2. Geometry, each angular point of a polygon, polyhedron, or other figure. 3. a meeting point of two lines that form an angle. 4. Anatomy, the crown of the head. ORIGIN Latin, 'whirlpool, crown of a head; vertex'." The little man has a pointed head, pointed sword and pointed shoes, so he will do for now. When I get a little more energy, I'll look around for a more fitting one. I'm glad you enjoyed the old rainbow. By the way, I found it by Google doing an image search for rainbows. You can find some interesting things that way. But be careful with your spelling.... oops

Hey everyone! I've also "migrated" from TAC - nice to see so many other former members here!

Vetex, I have a question for you:
WHERE did you come up with that signature?

You know, it's kinda sad - I got an email saying I had gotten another response to my "Interesting Quotes" thread and never got a chance to read it before they shut down the forum! frown <img border="0" alt="cry" title="" src="graemlins/cry.gif" /> <img border="0" alt="cry" title="" src="graemlins/cry.gif" />

But aside from the fact that they didn't give us any warning whatsoever, I can understand why they shut down the forum.

Exhibit A: The Nancy Drew Forum eek eek

Well, this forum doesn't look like it'll shut down anytime soon - I think I'll stay and grow old here... laugh

Re: The Adventure Company forums - 07/31/04 02:26 AM

I learned that signature (poem) in the 6th grade from a teacher who obviously was paying down his student loan by working in a dirt-poor North Georgia elementary school. He only lasted one school year, poor guy; I hope they gave him extra credit on his loan!

Good to see you here, Cauis! By the way, in case you haven't picked up on it yet, the word "growing" and "old" aren't used much around here. Check out the thread "Oh, Boy, What News I Got Yesterday!" in the "Mixed Bag".

But I think you'll love it here! <img border="0" alt="bravo" title="" src="graemlins/bravo.gif " />

Caius --

to GameBoomers!

It's good to 'see' you again. wink

As for the old ND forum kids, not too many have been here (yet?). Some are posting in the DreamCatcher forum (until/unless they get thrown out of there...). And hopefully, most found their way to Her Interactive's forum. laugh

Vertex --

It'll take me awhile to get used to your new name and avatar. Just for old times' sake -- here's your Rainbow! (inexplicably much larger than your avatar is/was)

----- -----

*Hope it's okay to link to it here; got the URL from your old avatar...
