Adventure Game with RPG Elements

Adventure Game with RPG Elements - 03/30/05 07:23 AM

Does anyone besides me like games like this? The old Quest for Glory series of games is a good example. Basically, games that are adventures at heart, but contain some gameplay common to the RPG genre, such as a stat-based character development system. I'm just curious and also wondering if anyone knows any more recent examples of this type of game. Thanks! smile

The Quest for Glorys were great, weren't they? Despite their age, I don't think any have come along to be just like them, but other hybrids of similar type would be Dragonriders of Pern, and The Fifth Disciple (not released in the U.S.). Anachronox had a lot of adventure to it as well, although it included some annoying arcade play. When this type of question is asked, people often mention Planescape Torment, but I haven't played it.

I'm ashamed to admit that I couldn't ever get myself to complete Quest for Glory V. I simply couldn't adjust to the differences of the game, which is unusual for me. duh I've played all the others numerous times, though!

Re: Adventure Game with RPG Elements - 03/30/05 08:09 AM

nickie,

planescape is not an adventure with rpg elements. it is an rpg first and foremost. it just has a very strong story which would appeal to a lot of adventure players and there is less combat than lot of rpgs. there is a lot of reading in the game. it is not even considered to be a hybrid.

other hybrids besides the ones already mentioned are technomage and gooka. both were not released in the US.

really recommend technomage if you can find it.

Re: Adventure Game with RPG Elements - 03/30/05 08:34 AM

Thanks Zanthia, I don't know anything about PT except it is often mentioned as a crossover game with a strong story. I really am going to have to play it one of these days, since so many people seem to enjoy it!

CBS, I loved IV - wonderful atmosphere and just so much fun to play!

Hi everyone

Zanthia - Technomage was the very first RPG I played on my own. I played it loads of times but haven't tried it on XP. The other game which was a great favourite in our house was Stonekeep. Wonderful game that was.

If you are an adventure gamer (ranked "I" for "Incompetent" as far as combat or arcade elements) and you wanted to just try your first RPG, which one would you choose? One of the Quest for Glories?

Hi smile

I found the Might and Magic series to be good to go with - after maybe a Quest for Glory starter laugh

You soon pick up the controls because they're not complicated.
Lots of quests too happydance

Cheers.

I just took the plunge into RPG's and I started with Divine Divinity. There is lots to learn, but it's not difficult. I'm rather enjoying my trip to the DarkSide. Plus there are some great mentors in the RPG forum to help out and guide you along. Thanx you guys! bravo

Yes Becky - Quest for Glory 1 (the VGA remake) would be an excellent first RPG for an adventure gamer. When I first played it I didn't even realize it wasn't an adventure. I thought of it as an "adventure with fighting". I haven't played the original, which had a text parser, but I'd think that would be fine too *if* you enjoy a text parser. smile

I tried Planescape: Torment but wasn't able to get into it. Too much emphasis on stats for me. The other games I've played that feel like Quest for Glory are the Final Fantasy games (at least 7 and 8, which were both ported to PC - I haven't played any others). There is some stat building required, but for the most part (as in Quest for Glory) you can ignore/downplay the fighting and concentrate on the story.

Re: Adventure Game with RPG Elements - 03/30/05 09:58 PM

rpgs in consoles are very different style than in pc's . they play more like adventure games with fighting. i am thinking of final fantasy series and more of the older psx2 rpgs. the more recent ones now are more action based as that is the current rpg trend. real rpg genre is on death's door.

lots of inventory but nowhere near the stat management that you find in pc games and some games have hardly any at all.

Fifth Disciple.

I obviously have to find Fifth Disciple. Sounds like a game I will like since I adored The Quest for Glory games.

I think "Bloodnet, A Cyberpunk Gothic (by MicroProse Software, Inc., 1993)" is a good example for adventure game with RPG elements. If you play it, you would feel it as a point and click adventure game first, and then find it has a character-development and party system (but not level system).

It's like an inventory-based 3rd person point & click adventure game. The "combat" sequences are turn-based and actually more like a strategy-based board game than any combat I've seen in other RPG games. There's an option to make a grid come visible during the combat parts, which makes the board game comparison more obvious. You count how many spaces away your enemy is on the grid and you see how many whacks he can administer in a move. The number of spaces away that you can move and the number of whacks you can administer and receive is determined by your stats. After every successful battle, your health is restored, so each battle is a little strategy puzzle in itself.

Re: Adventure Game with RPG Elements - 03/31/05 03:18 AM

No one says Zanzarah? cry wink
I found this to be such a lovely story, a wonderful adventure and you do role play, and have to strengthen your fairies...hmmm...maybe it's...maybe...nope! can't decide how to explain it! It's just beautiful!
But not quite an RPG?
Sorry, I just had to say this...the fairies made me do it! lol

Re: Adventure Game with RPG Elements - 03/31/05 05:14 AM

Looney, I really thought about saying Zanzarah in my initial answer, but Zanzarah is so difficult to put in any genre that I gave up. laugh I think it's a great game.

Becky, I would recommend Quest for Glory IV. It really does seem like an adventure, and like Emily I didn't realize it wasn't when I played it years ago. You might ask Syd - I think that's how she started with RPGs (the whole series) and look at her now! Happily bouncing from dark to light side! happydance

The Final Fantasy games I couldn't get to work on XP. Mad, you know I love those Might and Magic games - but they're a problem with XP too. Some people can play on Xp, and some can't. frown

Hmm... both Final Fantasy 7 and 8 run fine for me on XP.

I recommend KotOR. It´s an RPG with a great story and very good quests. Of course it has a lot of combat, but most of it is easy.

HI

I have DD and have not played it yet, but would like some of the others, especially if I can get them to play with point and click interface.I have played Dungeon Siege and really like that, but would like others and do not know what to buy. Any ideas would be welcome.

Thanks

The Quest for Glory games I would recommend to anyone - they are simply fantastic. I wouldn't compare them to FF7 (which I didn't like too much). They give you a lot of freedom while still having a great story and plenty of silly jokes. I think they really have the best of both worlds.

If you want a *free* introduction to adventure/RPGs, you could also try Dink Smallwood; just google it. It's nowhere near the QFG games, but it's worth playing, it's fun, and it's free!

Oh, wait, here it is. <a href="http://www.rtsoft.com/dink/">Dink Smallwood</a>. A free RPG which should be quite accessible for most adventure gamers.

Folks, hi,

I'd recommend Fallout (1997). Has a very strong story, is not too difficult, and the combat is pure turned based so you can plan all your moves. You can also talk your way out of many combat situations. It was my first RPG after 10 years of playing nothing but adventures, and I finished it without looking at a walkthrough or guide of any kind.

Divine Divinity is very good too, but the frenetic combat might put newbies off. It's very Diablo-like in this aspect.

My tuppence worth,

that is what i too originally thought about DD but so many boomers here have played DD as their first rpg and have loved it. i don't think the combat is anywhere close to being as hectic as diablo and i never agreed with the diablo comparisons it frequently gets.

i also thought fallout would have made a much better choice as a first time rpg.

[blip]. I always wanted to get DD and never did. It must be a really fun game.

If you can handle controls that take some getting used to and action-based fights, play the two Gothic games. They are the best RPGs of recent years - the sheer level of detail and the amount of options is just staggering.

Becky, you won't have any problem with it, honestly, as long as you have a computer that will play it. You're going to love it! Once you have that under your belt, you may just want to take a peek at DD, and join the party! happydance

I think Tlon is another good example of a true RPG/Adventure hybrid. Not that it's a great game or anything though.

I would like to know what RPG is. And please check out my 2 post in the f**k word subject by LenG.

Are my ideas on the line of RPG?

Hope I remember to come back here, if not, leave comment at my resolution post.

Jonas-

I take it the Quest for Glory are point and click, which is all I can use. If so I will try it.

Thanks
