Has anyone PLAYED Reah or Liath? - 01/28/03 01:28 PM

What are these games like? I guess I'm looking for a mini-review of each from some Boomers who have played them. I'm trying to decide if I do, indeed, want to go on a "hunt" for these games. Are they worth the effort based on the playing of the games? I know they are hard to find, but are they worth LOOKING for? LOL

I have played Reah and thought it was a very good game. It has been awhile, but as I remember, it is a point and click game. A typical adventure game with lots of puzzles and well worth playing if you can find a copy.

Here is the official Reah web site.

http://www.detalion.com/reah/game.html

It gives a mini review and states the game is no longer available. You'll have to try a used game site, or maybe someone at GameBoomers has a copy for sale or loan.

Reah will probably be pricey if you do find it. They recently had an auction of the DVD version at Ebay and the price (when I saw it) was 90 bucks. I would love to play the game also.

I loved Reah... Good puzzles, some Really tricky ones at the end. Nice graphics. A game where brain must be engaged, but doesn't require steam coming out of the ears!!

Hello DocPaul, wave

The DVD you saw at eBay sold for $ 130+.I was one of the bidder. I din`t bother to go high, couse in the mean time i found the original Polish on cd`s that has all the futures of the DVD. The introduction with the transporter is beautifull. The graphics are stupend: deep detailed and the colors are also very deep and "aquarello" like.
Here`s some explanetion of the details: i can almost count the tiles anywear they are. The sand is almost the real thing: grainy with the realy sand-looking. Wen the Transporter flyes over the montains or over the ocean, it looks so real a can`t describe. You have to see to believe.

I only payed $23.00.
I do not understand a woord when people talk, but there isn`t much talking anyway. but i do see the real Polish people speaking.

I played the english version, and i can tell you, it`s very defferent than the realy Polish one.

Girlgeek, e-mail me, if you are serious havin one. I also have Liath.

Love to yopu all. wave

I played both and liked Liath much better. Reah has great graphics and the people and places are well done. I am not really sure - but it still felt sterile to me. I just never got very engaged. I like it and wouldn't give it up - I just was so captivated by Liath.

Liath has the most amazing music and visuals. It has that misty softened hand drawn look to it. Picture walking into a square and this poignent music rises and leaves go swirling into the air. It is more of a fantasy game. The basic story is that the flow of time has been disrupted. There are three friends in the game. Tiche, Criss and Ithena. Tiche has left for a distant city - and has not been heard from in a very long time. Due to the time distortion Tiche is unaware of how much time has truly elapsed since her departure. Her two friends go on an epic quest to search for her and along the way realize that much more is at stake.

I love quests. smile

Now for the down side. Liath is one of those games that you either like despite it's flaws or not. Rosemary at Quandary wrote a well written review of Liath and found it too problematic and disjointed for a positive review. Liath Review

I didn't experience any glitches when I played and must admit that when I realized I was somewhat stumped as to how to proceed, grabbed a WT for the stuck portions of the game.

For an alternative view Here is another excellent analysis from Mr. Bill's Liath 2

I agreed with his points as far as my experience with the game. But again - the interface and lack of definition at times in the plot may be something you can't stand in a game.

girlgeek,

I loaded up my copy of Liath last week and was bowled over by the graphics. After a quick set of static screens you are put into a world that is one of the most visually stunning I've ever seen. The interface gives some people fits, it's very non-intuitive, almost, I would say, non-Western, if that makes any sense. It's point and click but the menu screens are really different and you use magic spells as well as regular actions. Once I figured that out and got the sound rebalanced and made my way out into the game world I had to keep pushing my jaw up off the edge of the desk. It sounds similar to the Polish version of Reah that catlee talks about. Intertestingly enough, Liath was developed by a German/Russian team I think.

I confess when I first started playing Liath I stayed in the first scene for an awful long time, fiddling around with things and trying to make something happen. I was so delighted when I finally figured out how to work the inventory. Other than that, a minor gripe is the robot-like way the characters move. But past that, it is a lovely, "different" game, and beautifully described by Laura and Scout.

nickie,

Take 2 Interactive made both Liath and Sign of the Sun and they both had that odd robot walk for their characters. It's kinda funny, esp. the sound effects. CLOP, CLOP, CLOP.

I took forever to get going as well. I read that some people had problems with their video and so missed the opening cut scenes in Liath. There's also a page at the front of the manual to gives some info, though not much. It's definitly not a game that serves up its story on a platter.

WOW! Thanks you guys! That all makes me want them both even more! I'm going to not worry about it though. Eventually, I'll run into them at a good price. I usually do. laugh

Actually Liath was developed in Russia (by Amber) for some German company which sold the game for distribution to Project 2 Interactive (which went bankrupt some time ago).

Seems like Amazon Germany has Liath (bundled with a game called Tunguska) for sale Here and according to my very poor knowlege of the german language it should be availible for dispatch 1 - 2 weeks after ordering it. I think I e-mailed Amazon about it a couple of months back and they said it was in german language only so I didn't bother ordering it. I thought it strange though, since I've read in reviews that the original release of Liath was multi-lingual, including options for both english and German language.

Right, Project 2, not Take 2. Big difference.

The version I have comes in 4 languages. English, Italian, French and German. All the spoken dialouge is in German I believe. You just choose your subtitle language, (which is really well done) Unless they stripped off that feature for the compilation republish, it should be fine. That's how I got my Liath. I bought it off German e-bay. The seller has it listed in German but when I wrote him, he answered in quite fluent English. Got a pretty good deal, if I remember right. People in the US tend not to bid so spiritedly on international, non-English listed auctions.

Give credit where credit is due. Those guys in Russia did a good job with Liath and deserved not to be mistaken with Take 2.

Maciek,

Sorry if the post came off as snide. I meant it sincerely. There IS a big difference between Project 2 and Take 2.

BTW, it says German and English speech on my Liath jewelcase but I've never been able to get anything but German dialouge with English subtitles. Are there two different versions?

Re: Has anyone PLAYED Reah or Liath? - 01/31/03 08:02 AM

Just got an answer from the german distributor for that Liath/Tunguska compilation I mentioned above, and the Liath included HAS an option for english speech and subtitles (don't know about the manual though). So if you're European or have a European friend, stop bidding 100 dollars for it at E-bay and buy it new for 15 bucks instead (unless of course you want the original release).

I've already got the original "english" release but haven't played it yet.

Re: Has anyone PLAYED Reah or Liath? - 01/31/03 01:10 PM

frazap,
That's exactly what the German seller told me. He read it off the jewelcase. It says German and English speech. On install, sure enough, there is the choice of English, German plus French, Italian and Dutch. But though I click the English box, I always get English subitles and German speech. There are 2 language dat files on the cd-rom, language.dat and lang.dat. I suspect they are the German and English speech files but I haven't ever found a way to get the english option to work instead of the German.

Guess that coulkd be the case with the one at Amazon Germany too then. Hopefully I'll get english speech in my original copy though. Good thing about the subtitles at least.

Re: Has anyone PLAYED Reah or Liath? - 01/31/03 09:04 PM

I could be wrong about this, but I believe that when you select English from the German version, that gives the English subtitles, not speech. I say this because there is a separate English language version which wouldn't make as much sense if the German version could be switched to English speech (ie. why even have an 'English' version then).

Re: Has anyone PLAYED Reah or Liath? - 02/01/03 12:36 AM

Well that makes all kinds of sense. I guess when they wrote English and German speech on the back of the box they really meant TWO different versions. So I must have got the German version then.

This is the quote on the box and jewel case:

Speech: English and German * Subtitles: English, German, Dutch, French and Italian.

To further confuse the issue, the printing on the cd-roms is all in English.

So maybe there were two different pressings using the same cd-roms? Or maybe there is a tweak that will activate the English language file. Dunno. It's not that much of a hardship really.
