Gameboomers History - 05/14/03 11:32 PM

Gosh, I've been a dues paying member for 1 year now!!
Although I used it many many times before, just did not join in.

When did this site start? And who started it?

Tell us a little about the development history.

I'm sure that all of the other Gameboomers would be interested too.

Hi There, Fred and Congrats on your 1st anniversary with Gameboomers!

Gameboomers fired up originally in May of 1999 and came on line the first week in June. Gameboomers is the realization of a dream our Founder, Bob, had been nurturing for a very long time. The primary charter for the site was to focus on the babyboomer generation in adventure gaming, with added emphasis on all age groups and all gaming genres.

We've grown exponentially in size and shape since then! Our continued focus is to answer all questions, participate in all discussion pertinent to gaming, and actively and wholeheartedly support our thousands of members (and rapidly growing) in the nicest, most diverse and supportive gaming community on the planet.

Re: Gameboomers History - 05/15/03 02:14 AM

I have to leave my comments with this post. It took me back to the days of early adventure gaming when there were no walkthru's and forums and you had to fight your way through a puzzle. You either did it or quit. One day, browsing the internet, looking for some kind of help on a puzzle, I happened upon Gameboomers and never left. This would have been late 1999 or early 2000. Technically not a member back then but always a virtual one. I would find other places to hang, but I always came back and am still here. It has always been the people. Always ready to help and always kind.

Re: Gameboomers History - 05/15/03 03:40 AM

I joined the same month and year as Syd. Hmmm that may explain a lot Anyway - that was November of 1999. Gad has it really been that long - whew..

I can't for the life of me recall how or why I stumbled in here the first time. I was a steady member at the very ancient and now lost forever AOL original game board. Then I was at spoiler center chat for a bit. I came to Boomers, rambled with the folks waiting for GK3 - but kept posting here at GB - then just settled in.

We have way more members now, several new forums and features. But it hasn't changed in the way of friendly and very smart people. smile

Ah yes, November 1999 - that's also the year Laura and I started work on the Happy Home for Wayward Gamers laugh

Norma told me about GameBoomers and I lurked about a month before I got up the nerve to post - the rest is as they say, history laugh

Re: Gameboomers History - 05/15/03 05:12 AM

I just wanted to say how very grateful I am to Bob and all of the others who worked to make Gameboomers a reality. I visit this site every day, if possible, and I didn't realize how much I enjoyed it until the site went down for a couple of days recently. A couple of other Gameboomers and I were writing to each other, like grasping a lifeline until the GB site was back!!
Again, thank you, thank you, thank you!!!
Hugs,
Beth

Re: Gameboomers History - 05/15/03 01:09 PM

I too found this site by doing a web search for hints on a game I was playing. (don't even remember which game!).

Before that, the closest to this site was the Gamers board on CompuServe. I was fairly active on that from '90 to '96 or so. They also had a good bunch of people there, but when I got rid of CompuServe as my Internet provider, I was no longer able to participate. Not even sure if that group is still active, and I've totally lost touch with the members there.

I sure hope that never happens with Gameboomers!

I too am here from the old compuserve site.Found my first game(Myst)in 1998 and found a walkthru book on it at the library!! Good thing I did or I may never have tried another game! Found Boomers last year and have been here every day since if only to see what is being played. I love finding a new game before it is found by the Boomers.Schism and Shadow of Destiny were two of them. Hope you never have to leave us Gameboomers!

I used to be member of Just Adventure forums and then it went down and it seemed that it was never going to come back. I wrote Randy at JA and he told me about this forum. I'm so very happy that he did. I don't know what I would do without my daily fix of Gameboomers. The members are so friendly and helpful especially to those members like myself who are computer dumb. They never make you feel stupid, even when you ask stupid questions.

Re: Gameboomers History - 05/15/03 09:52 PM

Hello !

I searched very long time ( several hours ) for that web archive link, because I only had the link in my memories, not in my favorites.

But after using some good search engines and sitting a little bit longer on my littler puter I found the web.archive.org. back again.

Now I can look again at pages that no longer exists but were very good like the publisher from Celtica:

Hoffmann&Associates/Artech Studios

They are all into the web.archive.org.

Friendly Greetings from

Moe Perry

P.S.: @Witchen: Uhh , I like your little elephant very much, he is so cute wink

Here's a link to the earliest archive of the board I could find. The forum certainly looked different.

Re: Gameboomers History - 05/17/03 05:25 AM

I guess I am one of the "early birds" as well. I think Linda Shaw first put me on to this, or maybe it was Dee. Anyway, I found many of my gaming friends nesting here, so I picked up some straws in my bill and made a nice cozy nest to which I keep coming back to. For me, it's home, and a real comfy one at that. thumbsup

When I first played Nightlong a few years ago I had some problems solving a puzzle at the end of the game, when I called the company that made the game the person at the help line suggested gameboomers as a possible sort for hints and WTs and gave me the address to get there and I have been using it ever since

And now you moderate the boards! You little closet lurker! smile
I noticed there were other moderators back then, how were (are) moderators chosen?

Hi there catsmom.........The Boomers' moderators, administrators, reviewers et al, are nominated by Boomers and staff and are eventually selected by the "Bob the Boss" along with the congratulatory hip, hip hoorays of the rest of us! laugh laugh laugh smile
