Other pc game genres? - 09/26/02 12:53 AM

Hi,
I am curious to see if most people here are diehard adventure gamers or not. I am wondering what other types (if any) of PC games you people play. I enjoy adventure games alot but, I do play other games. I also enjoy simulation games a great deal. I play Grand Prix Legends (THE racing simulation game), Formula 1 2001, Microsoft Flight Simulator 2002, Motocross Madness 2, Rally Trophy, Nascar Racing 2002. Can you tell that I like racing games? smile
What other types of games do you like to play?

I enjoy a good rpg or action game if it's not too bloody. I'm pretty sensitive to that stuff, so try not to buy games that mention gore.

One of the first games I played years ago was Xeen, and that was fun. lol

Re: Other pc game genres? - 09/26/02 01:27 AM

I play mostly adventure games..... I do have most of the "You Don't Know Jack" games, as well as several "board" games like monopoly, sorry, scrabble, etc.... and some educational games, too....

I have The Sims, but have never installed it... Is it really that good? If it is anything like Theme Hospital, it would probably be too confusing for me...

Snowmoon,
You must install The Sims right now laugh It is more fun than you can imagine and it really is not difficult to play. As a matter of fact, the game has a built-in tutorial that explains everything. Just mess around with it and you will be having a great time.

My favorites are adventure games but I'm slowly getting into RPGs (I think I have around 20 right now) and I have about 15 action/adventures that I hope to get into but my reflexes are crummy so no telling how I'll do lol

I love adventures, but I do play, Rollercoaster tycoon, and Mall tycoon....they are very addicting...

Re: Other pc game genres? - 09/26/02 02:34 AM

I tend to classify puzzle games (like Pandora's Box) along with adventure games for some reason, but if you want to count them separately, then I play those two kinds.

The only non-adventure type game I play is Diablo....

I have never played anything but Adventure games.
Hard enough to find the time for those, now that I'm BAAGing more rolleyes I've been tempted by Vet Emergency just to see what cases they have, but as I told my associate, we could spend the night at our local Vet Emerge and see the real thing without the cost laugh

Other than Adventures, I sometimes play stratagy games like Age of Empires. I've played The Sims, but not recently. (I actualy found a web site where you could download sims that look like the cast of the Sopranos!)

I also have a baseball game I liked to play , but it's DOS based and won't run on my XP maching. I'll have to check the bargain bins for a more recent one.

I play some online games too, like Backgammon or Literati (similar to scrabble) on the Yahoo game site.

I play mostly adventures.

Occasionally I also play puzzle games like the Jewels games, Puzz3D games, Pandora's Box, Bejewelled, Alchemy.

I've played a few action/adventures, but generally only try those with a god mode and those that seem to have something more interesting to offer than running around in a dungeon or spaceship and shooting things. Deus Ex and No One Lives Forever are on my todo someday list. Does anyone know if Anachronox has a god mode or a restore all health cheat?

Adventure/Puzzle games, period. I hardly have time enough for those. I see no need to expand my horizons until I tire of them -- and I don't think that is likely in the near future.

Re: Other pc game genres? - 09/26/02 06:11 AM

I play adventure games or adventure/action hybrids ( wild wild west, In Cold Blood) for the most part.

But I also love jump and runs with some shooting like Indiana Jones and The IF, Tomb Raider ....

I like hybrids FSP's like Hitman, NOLF (such a great game!!), Medal of Honor, Max Payne. They are shooters - but they have strategy factors where you have time to plan your attack or approach. Also stealth elements. Medal of Honor probably had the shortest time to react - but I loved the intervening stuff and I got real good at saving and ducking.

I have started loving Grand Theft Auto and will be getting Vice City. I also thought Shenmue was great. Hmmm Final Fantasy 9. Some other console games as well.

I haven't really played many strategy games because I don't like the little tiny people part of them. But I do like the Gettysburgh series - probably just because it is military history based.

I like puzzle games like Pandora, Safecracker, Milo and such.

I havn't played many RPG's except Final Fantasy and I suppose Deus Ex, though I thought of that as more like a hybrid. The turn based fighting isn't my favorite thing.

I don't really like standard action FSP's except for a rare game of Doom.

Re: Other pc game genres? - 09/26/02 06:28 AM

Mostly adventure games for the past fifteen years or so, but I also love the later Might and Magic RPGs (6,7, and 8 - not 9)and tend to replay them every so often, when I want something a little faster paced. I have dabbled a bit with Diggles, and it is really cute (stategy). I didn't much care for the Sims, but the new Sims Unleashed has PETS, so I may have to give that a try. I also enjoy Alchemy, Bejeweled and Roller Coaster Tycoon - all addicting.

Re: Other pc game genres? - 09/26/02 06:41 AM

I play mainly adventure and RPG's. I will give just about any non hybrid single player RPG a try. I include puzzle games when I say adventure genre.

Other genres I like are

action-RPGs: Vampire, Deus Ex, etc

action/adventure: Outcast, Tomb Raider,etc

FPS's: Max Payne, NOLF, Alice, Undying, etc

Fantasy turn based strategy such as HOMM series and Disciples I like but rarely have the time to play them. RPG's are very time consuming.

Games like The Sims and Roller coaster tycoon I have but haven't even started them.

Laura: You mentioned Grand Theft Auto 3. How much of the game is driving and how much is on foot. I do have the game. Do you have a wheel. I find the keyboard and mouse do not work very well for driving.

Re: Other pc game genres? - 09/26/02 08:34 AM

I enjoy all types of games except RPG:s, which I don´t care for at all. Most of them are too pompous and pretentious for my taste and they are often too long for me even to THINK about completing. If Deus Ex is an RPG (which I don´t think it is really) that´s the only one I´ve played trough and enjoyed.

I enjoy all types of games as well, as far as a favorite, I really cant say, but I can say that my "least" favorite are just plain action, its rare that I play those. And If I do its on a console system. laugh

Re: Other pc game genres? - 09/26/02 02:37 PM

Zanthia,

That is a great point about GTA. Most of it's driving - or in my case, I should say crashing and grabbing new cars. laugh I have been playing it on the PS2 - but looked at it for PC. A steering wheel would make a remarkable difference in the game play. Or at least the number of times you have to reload to finish jobs. This is going to sound dense, but do they make wheels to use with the PS2?

The new sequel looks even more amazing. Twice the game environment, internal locations, substantially enhanced AI on the NPC's and in particular gangs and such.

Re: Other pc game genres? - 09/26/02 09:25 PM

I've become a total RPG freak, in addition to my first love of adventures. I've mostly played "American" style RPGs, but have lately been learning to play the VERY different Japanese RPGs.

I love any kind of Adventure or RPG hybrid, with the exception of lame action/adventures. Those have to be pretty darned good to get my attention.

I'll play some action games, both 1st and 3rd person, if they have something "extra" -- either a really great story (Star Trek Voyager Elite Force) or amazing design (American McGee's Alice) or incredible technical wizardry (Max Payne) or a very strong mission structure.

I'm a fiend for the almost unclassifiable Thief games, and I think any adventure player who doesn't give these two incredible titles a try is needlessly missing a profoundly great game experience.

I love puzzle games, but don't play them much. I hugely admire Pandora's Box. I played and enjoyed all the Jewels games.

I love turned based strategy as well. LOVE Heroes of Might and Magic.

I'm interested in any game that tries to think out of the "genre" box (Deus Ex, the first System Shock, Outcast).

I've tried, but just don't have the right kind of brain to play Real Time Strategy games. I wish I did, because there's a lot of great ones out there.

I'm not interested in God Games (SimBathroom, SimUniverse, SimGirdle, the Sims) or Create and Empire and Take Over the World games (Civilization, Caesar, Tropico, Roller Coaster Tycoon).

I'm not interested in flight or driving simulators or any kind of sports games (what a surprise!).

As it is, I like so many different kind of games that my life is a constant misery of playing catch up. If only someone would agree to support me so I could sit and game on my 8 platforms (PC, GameBoy Advance, XBox, GameCube, PS2, Nintento, Super Nintendo, Nintendo 64) for 8 to 12 hours a day as God intended, I would be happy. IS THAT SO WRONG?!?!?!

My favorite...Adventure Games but I really enjoy puzzle games lie Pandora's Box, Brain Games and Jeweles of the Oracle. I also like the online games Alchemy, Collapse and others. I also love FreeCell and I have Mega Solitaire loaded up so if I just want to play something quick I pick a favorite from one of a couple hundred. eek

Laura: Well that is me too constantly crashing the car. There are wheels for the PSX2 you can buy but they aren't cheap. If I was playing on the pSX I know I would be even crashing more than I do on the PC.

Ray: At the rate you are going you will soon surpass me in the number of RPG's played.

Re: Other pc game genres? - 09/27/02 01:48 PM

Zanthia,

You are dead on about the price on wheels for the console. I priced them last night - 59.00 to 99.00 Sounds too much for 2 games. I might just have to get better the hard way. Hey crash and drive is a way to get places - right? laugh

Laura,

Don't know how feasible this is where you live but I've seen wheels and gamepads and joysticks by the shelf full in the local Goodwill stores in my area. For like, 3 bucks each.

Re: Other pc game genres? - 09/27/02 05:03 PM

Nice to see a lot of you have varying tastes. I also play quite a few shooters. Started back with Doom 1. My normal routine is to play an adventure game then switch to a shooter, back and forth so I don't get bored. Some of my favorite shooters are NOLF, Half-Life, Max Payne. I played a RTS called Command and Conquer: Red Alert 2 for a long time with some friends online. That game was great but only if you can have some online competition. I am thinking of starting up Medal of Honer Allied Assault or Aliens vs. Predator 2 pretty soon here while I play Broken Sword 2.

Number one favorites are puzzle games smile
Xiama
Pandora's Box
3D Puzz games

Number 2 favorites are adventure
TLJ
Atlantis games
Amerzone
Zork's
etc. (includes a huge list of games)

Number 3 favorites are action/adventure 3rd person
Prince of Persia
Arabian Nights
Jekyll and Hyde
Tomb Raider

Least favorites: strategy and 1st person shooters
RPG's would entice me more if I didn't have to concoct magic and spells.

Re: Other pc game genres? - 09/27/02 06:26 PM

I missed reading the posts on page two of this post, so went back and did so. I am wondering what some people consider action or action/adventure or shooters. There seems to be some differences in description.

I like 3rd person action/adventure (or Laura's run and jump smile ) games that have mostly adventure aspects with some killing. The older Tomb Raider games fit into this niche nicely. Lots of running, jumping and puzzling how to move ahead with only a few deaths on her hands.

Is 3rd person adventure a separate catergory? Odyssey, Nightlong, Blade Runner, Sanitarium. I'm never sure whether they are really adventure or action/adventure.

I consider action to include 1st person shooters. The main purpose of these games seems to be to kill as many people as possible. I just finished No One Lives Forever and even though it is an unbelieveably good game I had a hard time finishing it. To each his own I guess.

Re: Other pc game genres? - 09/27/02 06:39 PM

Adventure Games are my first and lasting love, then puzzle games such as Jewels of the Oracle, Quest for Karma or Pandora's Box. I cannot stand Sims for no reason in particular, maybe it's this god playing business somebody mentioned... I like to play Bejeweled also and Snoods which had me quite addicted there for a while. Finally as a salute to my years as a private pilot I have played some flight simulators in the past and one of them is in my shelf right now-together with a mean looking joystick-waiting to be played. Problem is I have crashed so many times playing the darn things that I am somehow leery to try again.

Re: Other pc game genres? - 09/27/02 09:04 PM

Ray,

How long have you been playing RPG's? I thought it wasn't all that long but I must be mistaken with that very impressive list.
You have 2 games on the list I haven't played. Throne of darkness which I do have and BG: dark Alliance which I have but can't play. I started Arcanum but never finished as it wasn't working well on my ucrrent PC but I do plan to go back to it.

I have no idea how far you have to go as I have never made a list of all the RPGs or adventure games I have played. I think it would be scary just looking at all the titles and see how many there are.

Off the top of my head(leaving out ones you already said)

IWD with both expansions
Pools of Radiance 2
All the quest for glory games
Might and Magic 2,3, 4, 5,worlds of xeen(4 and 5 together), swords of xeen, MM9
Ultima: U4,U5,U6,U7 with expansion, U7.5 with expansion,U8,U9, Ultima underworld 1 and 2, worlds of Ultima: savage empire and martian dreams
Elder scrolls: Arena, Daggerfall, Battlespire, Morrowind
Wizardry:6,7,8 and Nemesis
Wizards and warriors
Lands of lore 3
Stonekeep
Gorasul
Septerra Core
Evil Islands
Eye of beholder 1,2,3
Realms of arcania series
Vampire: The Masquerade
Grandia 2(pc version)

That?s enough for now. I know there are still many more that I haven't mentioned especially those that were only on floppies. I left out all the console RPG's which would include all FF up to number 10, dragon warrior series, breath of fire series, chronocross, cronotrigger, Lunar series , etc.

Nightlong is definitely a good old-fashioned inventory-based 3rd person adventure game.

Sanitarium is also straight adventure. It may be 3rd person in that you see your character on the screen, but it certainly isn't action based. It has a few timed sequences, but that doesn't make it an action game.

It's somewhat debatable whether Odyssey is "adventure/action" or adventure because of all the timed sequences, action-based puzzes, and opportunities to die in it. But you notice there is a difference in the puzzles between games like Tomb Raider and games like Odyssey. Tomb Raider puzzles are mostly "find the lever" or "figure out the best way to jump" or etc. In Odyssey there is more variety to the puzzles. Some of them are more like those you might find in a puzzle game while others are more "figure out how to get from here to there without being killed."

I haven't played Blade Runner so I can't comment on how that game worked.

Or kill as many monsters as possible.

I haven't played NOLF, but from what I've heard, the puzzles are more complex than just the basic "find the lever" type. That puts it more in the category of an action/adventure than just a straight shooter. I do intend to play NOLF some day - using god mode of course.

Hi all,

good question FM!!

I play the Sims, puzzle games, rollercoaster tycoon, theme hospital, card games, do miss themepark original but we don't have an old 386 to play it on!! I play cribbage online at Yahoo occasionally. Off the pc, I play chess, backgammon, crib, bezique, OK, just about any card game you can mention xpt bridge as I could never get the hang of the bidding!! My dad and I used to play every evening when I lived at home. Oh and I am learning Warhammer games as our son is mad about them!!

Re: Other pc game genres? - 09/28/02 04:53 AM

Jenny100, I think that you're right about Odyssey. I'm now leaning more towards adventure since there isn't any killing in the game.

NOLF is a beautiful and well done game. I'm glad that I played it but I would never replay it. I had a hard time finishing Thief as well and put these two games in the same ballpark. Both were excellent well done games with lots of sneaking around. I don't like to sneak and think that maybe that is my main issue with both. I like to barge into a room, do my business and get out, lol.

I'm just so happy that there is a wealth of games to choose from and I'm not sitting here playing a kick boxing animee game smile

Re: Other pc game genres? - 09/28/02 08:03 AM

Oh dear, there are so many types of games I enjoy. Adventures led me onto RPG, anything in the style of Final Fanasy is a hit with me. I have always been a fan of puzzles, I will play Boulderdash forever but more recently got addicted to SuperCollapse. Pandora's Box is permanently installed. Puzz3d is in a category of it's own and I love it.

I love Age of Empires and have bought many games of this type that I have not started. God games also appeal to me; I loved Populous the Beginning so much that after I had traded it away I bought it again when I realised there was an additional missions disc.

I am sure I will enjoy Thief, Ray and have bought both games. One of these days I will play them... I am fairly confident I will enjoy The Sims but do not own this one yet (how unusual!). I am trying to like shooting games with a good story but I find I am very bad at this.

Finally, Seaman (on the Dreamcast) is in a category of its own, I guess I like unusual gameplay type games.
