Sacred - 12/26/04 07:12 PM

As you may remember I could never get this game to work due to the copy protection - well today I was going to get back into Knights of the Old Republic but I have misplaced Disk 1 so I can't until I track it down or buy another game cry Decided to load in Sacred just for the heck of it - low and behold and will wonders never cease but it's playing and I have no clue how or why it is now working lol What I do need to know is for those that have played it - is it playable without any patches? I am deathly afraid to install a patch for fear of causing the game to go into the "disk verification error" mode again (truthfully, I'm also afraid to exit out of the game for the same reason - I don't suppose this can be played in one sitting can it?) rotfl

Re: Sacred - 12/26/04 07:33 PM

Naw, syd. This definitely can't be played in one sitting! laugh laugh lol lol

Re: Sacred - 12/26/04 08:05 PM

You can play without any patches, Syd, though some of the quests are messed up in the original unpatched game, the main storyline quest will still be playable all the way to the end.

No, it's not a Nancy Drew game, it will take more than one sitting, unless you are sitting for 40 hours at a time..

You will love this game , syd! wave

I patched my game before I started and had no problems. There is another download for Sacred Plus which I didn't install but it is supposed to expand the game even further. I'll do that next time I play the game <img border="0" alt="[santa]" title="" src="graemlins/santa.gif" /> .

Re: Sacred - 12/26/04 10:51 PM

Well my battle mage - Betsy May (I strike fear into all who cross my path either that or they laugh themselves to death first) laugh has just made level 5. I have a couple of tag alongs with me and have so far completed four quests. I'm looking for the blacksmith right now but have no clue where the old stone circle is - I need to find a map that gives me the locations of places. BM is telling me to get a move on (she sure has a deep voice for a girl wink ) so I guess I'd best be getting back to finding that wayward blacksmith.

Edit - found the blacksmith now just hope I didn't sell the sword he wants me to get from some goblins lol

Re: Sacred - 12/27/04 09:09 AM

i played it unpatched - UK version. had no major problems. heard some had big problems with patch, decided not to patch it unless i had to. I never did patch it. only some of the random quests were a bit problematic. not a big deal. could still do all the regular side quests. had no crashes. game was very stable.
Posted By: popcorneater

Re: Sacred - 12/27/04 01:37 PM

I played with the patch, but not sure if it would have made a huge difference Syd. The fact that you're not able to run it, I think I too would leave well enough alone.

Have fun. I think I'm going to order the "new version" instead of downloading..me and downloads are not getting along real well these days.

Have fun bravo

Re: Sacred - 12/27/04 02:42 PM

I played without the patch on the UK version, and didn't have any problems. I hear that the new version that you can download for free really makes the game better though. Like Ingie, instead of downloading, I sold my original and bought Sacred Plus instead to play it again someday. Hope you have a great time with it! Oh, and that circle of fire spell really knocks off the baddies.
Posted By: syd

Re: Sacred - 12/27/04 07:34 PM

I used that circle of fire spell a time or two laugh Killed that big huge mean Ogre with the turning to stone and smacking it to pieces spell. That one reminded me of the freeze spell in DD.

My spell using abilities seem to be sporadic - sometimes I can get them to work and sometimes not - not sure why (and yes I let them recharge). I'm also trying to figure out how those combo spells go together and which ones to put with which. Haven't done anything with them yet.

I just hope I can get back into the game tonight -

And what's the new version?
Posted By: nickie

Re: Sacred - 12/28/04 02:28 AM

The spells in the new version are enhanced and supposedly work better for one thing. I can't remember what all they did, but it's the same game but supposedly fixed in all the areas that people complained about, like the random quests, etc. I sure do like the name you picked, Syd - I know I'd be leery of a guy called Betsy May!
Posted By: syd

Re: Sacred - 12/28/04 02:48 PM

Yup me and Betsy May are cleaning up around here laugh The game let me back in so with any luck as long as I don't accidentially eject the disk I may be able to finish it.

I killed the minatour that was guarding the treasure but man I need potions. I seem to have bought them all and none of the traders have any more - me thinks I'm in a heap of trouble help

BM just made level 9 and we're heading off to find Wilbur (well, I'm heading off to work in a few minutes - BM will be heading off to find Wilbur after I get home).

Re: Sacred - 12/31/04 09:07 PM

Does anyone know if there are maps to Sacred? I mean the more detailed ones that tell you where a location is - I'm trying to find the old tombstones in the caves (I got these quests in Faeries Crossing).

Re: Sacred - 12/31/04 09:55 PM

Do you get a blue arrow on your map screen? You can scroll the map to see the final destination of the arrow.

Re: Sacred - 12/31/04 11:31 PM

Nope Rowen no blue arrow on the map screen. Guess I'll just count these two quests as uncompleteable - rats I hate to be a failure lol

Oh Syd, wave

Even with the download patch I still had quest I couldn't complete because of no locations shown..

Well now isn't that interesting. One of the major complaints about the game, and still not fixed. mad

Re: Sacred - 01/03/05 09:03 AM

this is not very encouraging...
i just started on this game, i haven't had many problems with it yet, except for the disk verification error. i dread quitting the game, too, for fear it won't start up again.

i was just wondering, can i get my followers to ride horses too? it's sad the way wilbur runs behind while my elf sits all so high and mighty on her "heavy nag" (this horse thing is really cool)
Posted By: syd

Re: Sacred - 01/03/05 09:20 PM

Hi lucca - nope I'm afraid only your character can ride the horsie - I didn't even bother buying one because you can't fight from it and by the time I managed to get off - I got killed rolleyes

My BM is now at level 23 (I think) - I'm in Chapter III - me thinks I played waaaaaaay too much this weekend laugh
Posted By: Rowan

Re: Sacred - 01/04/05 12:15 AM

I invested some levels into the horse later in the game and always made sure to buy the most enchanted saddle I could get. With a good horse you can out run many of the enemies that pop up just to be a pain in the saddle area. wink If I saw a group of enemies ahead that I knew I wouldn't be able to outrun I would jump off the horse just as they spotted me. They never attacked the horse if you are on the ground. You will need a good horse to outrun that dragon in the southern desert.

Re: Sacred - 01/04/05 02:49 AM

Dragon in the southern desert???? Arrrgggggghhhhh I did kill one there already (at least I think it was in the southern desert - my sense of direction is the pits). You mean there is another one?????
Posted By: Rowan

Re: Sacred - 01/04/05 01:58 PM

Syd, it was that big sandy place near the bottom of the map. I forget the name of the region. There are several dragons in the game but the one in the desert was the hardest one for me because I wasn't very strong when I ran into him. He had to breathe on me only once and I was dead. The only strategy that worked for me was to ride my horse out of range of his breathe but lure him to follow me to the nearest town just north of where he was. Once in town he didn't fit through the gates so I could hide behind a wall and fire shots at him - many, many , many shots until he finally died.
Posted By: syd

Re: Sacred - 01/04/05 02:59 PM

Man I hope it's the same dragon I already killed - big red scary guy - yep breathed fire and I was toast. I also had to keep running out of his way. Didn't think to lure him into a town - I kept running around in circles lol Then all of a sudden he got stuck against a cactus I think and couldn't move (I personally said a prayer of thanks to the god of game bugs for that one) evil and I just slashed at him until he was dead.

I've been playing Sacred at lunch time from time to time for ages. Am still in chap 1. I was having a few weird problems that the download to Sacred Plus fixed for me.

It's an interesting game, but definitely not a fav for an rpg system. Compared to NWN and KOtoR, there seems to be so little in the way of additional plots.

Lucca, there is a second entrance to that cave. I haven't played for a while so I can't tell you off hand where that entrance is. I'm sure you will run across it sooner or later. I remember being stumped at the same quest.
Posted By: lucca

Re: Sacred - 01/06/05 11:24 AM

thanks rowan, but the women will have to suffer at the hands of those hoodlums. a higher duty calls, and i am off south towards the desert.
the real weird part is that it regenerates faster than any other rpg i've played. the monsters just keep coming and i'm almost sure the quests are randomly generated.
Posted By: Rowan

Re: Sacred - 01/06/05 04:02 PM

If you do almost all of the quests in a region or town you will get a message that the area has been cleared out and a little banner symbol appears on the map. When that happens there will be a great slow down in the regeneration of baddies in that region. That is why it is worthwhile staying in a town and accepting all the quests including the times quests.
Posted By: Pib

Re: Sacred - 01/06/05 11:00 PM

I really ought to try that. It would be nice to have fewer monsters generating in some areas.

I do think monster regeneration is too fast in this game. You would think killing 40+ goblins or whatever close to town would be enough to make any others in the area pause before they attach. smile

Hi mackie laugh I know I haven't been around here much - been putting in 12 hour days at work and whatever spare time I have I'm smacking virtural baddies around so I haven't had much time for posting lol

Lucca I know how you felt about Wilbur frown I replayed that part three times hoping I had done something wrong so I could prevent his demise - alas it wasn't meant to be. I'm in Chapter 3 right now - doing quests around Braverock Castle. I sorta remember rescuing a bucnch of women but don't remember how I got to them (anything past 20 minutes ago and I can't remember) eek

I'm with you Pib - I would think after all those baddies watching me dispatch their ilk with my trusy blade and fire storm would run in terror - but nooooooo - they keep coming at me and worse they bring friends rotfl

Rowen I obviously haven't done all the quests in an area because I have never seen a banner (and here I thought I was doing so well) think
Posted By: Rowan

Re: Sacred - 01/07/05 03:02 AM

When I played this I did all the untimed quests in a town first and I would decline the timed ones until I had done the others. When no more regular quests appeared I began to do those that gave you a day to do them. When I did some of those that message that the region is at peace would be given. That is when that banner appeared on the map in that region. It made revisiting that region in the future less irksome. There were still some baddies but not near anything like before.

Braverock is a huge area with a great number of quests. woozy You'll be there for quite a while if you are planning on doing all the quests.

Drat Wilbur dies at the start of the chap, is this the unavoidable death previously mentioned?

yea pib, that's it frown

rowan, when she says: "this region is at peace!" does that mean i've done all the quests in that region?

and... my log book isn't recording the quests anymore. the last one it recorded was at slater's grave, that's less than half the quests i've done so far. i've been getting quests and finishing them, and getting the blue and yellow thingies in the map, but it's like she just decided she was sick of keeping a log.
is this one of the dreaded glitches in the game? has it happened before?

The log has tabs for each chapter, once you start chap 2. I only noticed it cause Wilbur gave me a quest and when I first went to the log, it was showing me the chap 1 quests. Look to the left of the journal and hit a tab.

Re: Sacred - 01/07/05 02:34 PM

Lucca, when you get the message that this region is at peace it means that you have done a sufficient percentage of the quests. I don't think it is all of them, just most of them. Good luck. Have you noticed any banners yet on your map?

I think it has to do with a bad interface design in the game and nothing to do with your brains. I spent some time looking through all the chap 1 quests in the log trying to spot the new stuff. Then finally I noticed the stupid tab. woozy

It should default to opening the log to the current chapter, that would be far better and less disconcerting. The game has so many other things it must track, the current journal page shouldn't add that much burden to it.

Re: Sacred - 01/09/05 02:18 PM

Arrrgh I need help. I am looking for the second element of Ancaria and have no clue where it is. I found the air one in the abandoned Ice palace in Frostgard and my log book says I have to get the fire element from the dragon at Alkanaba noc Draco in the far south. My problem is the far south of what? There is a dragon in Frostgard but he's not in the far south - he was up around the ice palace and I have him trapped inside right now. Is that the dragon I'm supposed to kill or is there another one some place? My map only shows the elements at the entrance to the cave so that's no help in pin pointing the exact location.

Any one remember this part?

Edit - well I answered one part of my question - the dragon I was talking about was not the one I needed - so where the heck is this turkey?

Edit the second time - I looked closer at my "paper" map and found Alkazaha nor Draco on it - please ignore this entire post whistle

i'm at the exact same place, i just got the first element from frostguard, trapped the evil dragon behind a shrub lol and fired at him for about 15 minutes.

the only problem is, my log says i have to go to noc draco, but my map is still showing a yellow thingie next to frostgard... so i really have no idea where to go...

Re: Sacred - 01/09/05 07:08 PM

lucca you need to be where I've been trying to get to for the past 5 hours frown I can't find a way into the dratted place. Head out of Frostgard and go south back through the library and the monastary - remember the desert? Well the area we need to get into is to the west of that. Looks like the middle of the lava field but for the life of me I can't find a way in. I have gone almost completely around this place and all I can find is cliff faces and caves with nasty creatures in it. I'm on my way back up toward Porto Draco in hopes of finding a way in from that side but it's not looking good.

Edit - Edit - I found the way in lol I must have zigged when I should have zagged and missed the opening the first time around the cliffs. Not that I'm thrilled mind you - I've already died three times woozy

Re: Sacred - 01/09/05 07:20 PM

Lucca and syd, I remember having problems with the yellow quest flags while getting out of Frostgard. Sometimes the yellow flag would appear in the lava fields then it would jump back to Frostgard for no reason I could see. Going to the Draco place will not solve the quest unless the yellow flag is there. All I remember is that I entered and exited Frostgard about a million times before the flag would stick at the lava place. I think you have to talk to that person (forget her name) that brought you to Frostgard on your way out.

If you follow the perimeter of the lava fields southwestward you should find a path leading upwards to the fields. Once there it is a bit of a maze because you have to hop from island to island until you find the Draco cave entrance - fighting baddies and lava spews the entire time. This is when a trusty horse with fire protection comes in handy.

Rowen the yellow flag didn't appear (or at least I didn't notice it) until I got out of the library - then it appeared on my map. But like you I ran in and out of that stupid cave (watching those ice giants multiply like cockroaches I might add) about 10 times.

the worst part is i have go through the frost giant cave again ****shudders***

i guess taking the portal is out of the picture, everytime i run back into the monastery the flag returns to cave exit in frostgard. looks like my trusty war horse will have to take a real long journey.

Re: Sacred - 01/12/05 02:23 AM

For me the hardest dragon was that one in the southern desert. After that the others all got easier. Good luck.

If you explore the northwest forest area you will come across a dragon guarding lots of treasure. He did not seem quest related and he also wasn't very difficult.

Re: Sacred - 01/12/05 09:05 AM

actually, both dragons were quite easy to kill. i trapped the one at frostgard behind a shrub, and the other one behind a pool of lava.
i had to keep prancing around to get out of the way of the one in the southern desert. but if you use magic, it's not so hard.

i'm using a wood elf. i started with a vampiress at first, but i kept dying and decided i wanted more powerful ranged weapons. so i went with a wood elf.
i got to start at a different place with different characters, and with a different character to give me my first quest.
pretty cool!

Maybe I'll take her where she needs to go and then go look for the elves.

Re: Sacred - 01/15/05 08:19 PM

I hated running an escort service, too. rotfl I used to do the escort quests as soon as I could just to get rid of them. Don't forget that doing almost all the quests in a region reduces the regeneration rate of all the baddies in that area. You'll know you achieved this when you get the message that there is peace in the region.

Re: Sacred - 01/16/05 03:00 PM

Okay here's my sad tale of woe. I fought my way all the way to getting the Earth element - (it took me forever to kill the medussa snake woman guarding the door). Got the element, turned around and fought my way back out to the front and out of the cave, checked my log book and map for the location of the next element - nadda - nothing - my last log book entry was the one about getting the key from the high priestess (which I did or I never could have gotten the door open). It never registered that I got the earth element duh Said a few unkind words to the god of game bugs and went back to a save right before I battled the medussa snake woman - killed her again after much cussing and yelling - got the earth element and low and behold it again didn't register in my log book. This time however I went across the last bridge and saw the portal rolleyes Went through it and got back outside the cave in a quick flash - to sum this story up - the quest for the earth element still isn't registered in my log book that it's complete but the next element marker is showing up on my world map.

Did anyone else have this happen and am I going to be okay? I mean we're talking the main quest here. If it doesn't appear in the log book that's it's been completed can I finish the game? (just so you all know I downloaded Sacred Plus before I started so I assumed that I had all the patches - was I wrong?)
Posted By: Rowan

Re: Sacred - 01/16/05 05:10 PM

Syd, I can't remember about the logbook entry (or non-entry) but I would assume if the next quest is already flagged on your map that you should be OK.

Same here Syd, can't remember about the log book.

But that would make me spit if I did all that fighting and not even recorded mad . If I remember correctly, that happened a lot, and then something else would trigger it..

Good luck, like Row, I would just look to see if there is a place on the map now. Also, I did the escort service as soon as I could..the respawns in this game are awful. scared

Thanks guys - I'm continuing on like it's completed in the log book. I got the message about the dam so I hope that's a good sign that everything's okay.

Ingie I know what you mean about the respawing - it's the pits. When I kill something I want it to stay dead not regenerate to come back and get me later.

I'm still working my way through chap 2. Having rushed south to warn the prince and getting slaughtered by many undead, I restarted and am taking it slower. I have 3 areas with flags and so might have it a bit easier if I need to trudge over that landscape a third time.

Tomorrow sees me entering the area I died in last time with a hoard of undead potions and heal potions. evil I dare them to try again.

Re: Sacred - 01/18/05 08:14 PM

Pib I loved those undead potions (but I did think it was fun to watch the skeletons keep coming back to life minus another body part) laugh

I just killed a swamp dragon - man was he tough - took me forever and 26 dyings before I got him. My log book still isn't showing the earth or now water element quests complete but the next flag to meet the sorcerer has appeared so I guess all is well -

I am now being attacked by spiders and other such poisonious critters (those poisonious trolls do me in more times than I can count) slapforehead

wow, you've really pulled ahead.
i'm still battling those dark elves.

i can't get to the poison cure flag to the north or braverock castle frown
did you get that quest, syd?

Re: Sacred - 01/19/05 05:07 PM

Hi lucca - nope haven't gotten a poison cure quest. Who did you talk to to get it? I probably haven't gotten half the quests in this game. Does anyone know if there is a list of all the quests?

I have gotten to Braverock Castle - I think I even have a portal to it now.

Syd, you could take a peek at this site:

SACRED JUNKIES

Under Game Info there is a list of quests, I don't know if it's comprehensive or not, the site's wallpaper makes it a bit hard to read for me.

Re: Sacred - 01/21/05 07:07 PM

Well I found all the elements and took them to what's her face only to be told "guess what? There's another element you need" rolleyes So I'm off to another part of the world. Still killing spiders and those slug thingies as I go (or they are killing me - depending on how fast I am) laugh

Re: Sacred - 01/23/05 02:38 PM

Well I played non-stop yesterday (okay, I took an occasional potty break) laugh and now I'm in Chapter IV. As per my usual duh I had to kill the Shaddar beast twice because I didn't pay attention to what I was supposed to do the first time whistle

Now I'm off to Shaddar-Nur laugh

I downloaded it and installed it - what's it supposed to do? Or do I have to buy it also? (lame questions I know but there you have it) laugh

Re: Sacred - 01/23/05 07:01 PM

Shaddar is now history laugh Now back to Morrowind (not sure if I'm going to start over or just continue - guess it will depend on if I can remember what the heck I did so long ago) woozy

Yea! Another non-adventure game triumph for Syd!
But now the Sacred thread will fade away..

Re: Sacred - 01/24/05 06:56 AM

"Ha!" cries the PiB. "It shall not fade till I have triumped."

I liked the sacred junkies list - the map of portal locations along is worth the ticket. smile

Good for you Syd, wave

Have fun in Morrowind..I think last I heard you were dancig on a bar table.. rotfl

From my understanding, the "Plus" for Sacred was to change some things folks were complaining about and fix so many bugs..either can purchase the download or purchase the hard copy.

Re: Sacred - 01/24/05 10:47 PM

I believe that Plus also added a few new quests and monsters, but if you haven't finished it, you might not realise what's new and what's not.

"Sacred PLUS Download 10.11.2004

Sacred PLUS is the free content download which adds two new regions, new enemies and even more items and quests to the original Sacred. "

It did fix some bugs for me, including a really odd one that made using the shops almost impossible (all items went completely transparent, which made finding the things you wanted to sell hard and you just had to scroll the shop screens and read descriptions as they came up. When not in a shop, the inventory was ok.)

Re: Sacred - 01/24/05 11:14 PM

Well I guess I didn't know how to access the other lands because I didn't whistle But it might have been Plus that allowed me to finally be able to play and for that I'm grateful. I do know I'm not crazy enough about it to replay any time soon laugh

Re: Sacred - 01/25/05 12:29 AM

can understand that Syd, not one of my favorites..it really had some good possiblities though..and hopefully the story line using some of their things-I loved the log book(when it worked) and maps.

I'm sure you're right Pib, I read about it and thought, someday..maybe..

smile I'm quite getting into it, now that I know when to walk away and when to run. (Never run for it when monsters regen at normal rates.)

Re: Sacred - 02/15/05 12:34 AM

Man oh man, I just got to the desert dragon in chap 2.

Wow, he's a tough character. Gotta think of some good tactics (tactic one, try to remove as many undead as possible from the area before engaging a dragon.)
