Syberia 2: how to solve the problems (wildly) - 04/28/04 09:04 AM

I'm REALLY sorry to suggest
this, but when the companies are so stupid to prevent their clients from playing the games they bought, then this is the only way...
I downloaded the nocd crack from here:
http://spacetarget.com/games/pc_syberia_2.shtml#Syberia%202%20v1.0%20[ENGLISH]%20Fixed%20EXE
Do a full install of the game then sobstitute this to your .exe file.
This is nothing illegal if you have your own original copy of the game, as I have.
Now mine works fine. Hope it helps.

I don't blame you for taking this measure to be able to play the game you paid for.

However, this statement is not necessarily true:

Quote:

The EULA (License Agreement) for most games, strictly prohibits modifying the game executable in any way, or using such a modified executable. Whether you own the original game or not makes absolutely no difference as far as legality.

Is there anthing ethically wrong with it? Not as far as I'm concerned. Could you get in trouble for it? Not a chance. This doesn't make it legal, however.

I understand what u mean, u'r right. And great Avatar btw.
But I was very angry with the Microids company. I can't accept not to play a game I paid for because they put inside a program that snoopes in my computer!!! NO_WAY!
Cheers

Absolutely! And what's more, the pirated version of this game was out on the internet the same day it was released. So this fabulous copy protection is only hurting people that actually PAID for the game!

Regarding the whole bit with the EULA, just wanted to add a point... the legality of points in a clickable EULA has been discussed and tested on more than one occasion, I believe. I don't claim to know all the details as I am not a lawyer, but I recall in my Everquest playing days that there was a bunch of controversy over the EULA and some of the things that people were "agreeing" to every time they clicked. Lots of discussion over the whole bit about what you can do with stuff you "own", and what exactly the company can claim you can and cannot do. Revolved around points such as the agreement between the consumer and the game company, and what constitutes a transaction... blah, blah.

End result of all this was that the boundaries seem to be rather hazy and making claims of legality isn't quite as easy as it seems on the surface.

Just a bit of info to get people thinking smile

I'm noticing more and more the bit that says you can't "loan" your game out. I, for one, say they have to prove I loaned it and to do that they have to prove someone borrowed it from me and they have to prove I owned it (or borrowed it myself) in the first place. I think it's just another "scare" tactic but, unfortunately, a legal technicality they can get away with. Enough from me. I tend to "get on a roll" sometimes about things that just plain irritate me when I feel someone is trying to manipulate me. laugh

Same here BillyBob. Especially when it's things like the game protection software keeping you from playing a game you bought. And the thing is, it's not like these more and more complicated protection schemes are actually preventing the people who crack the games from doing it... the games are still appearing on download sites the second the games get released.

Oh, well.

I completely agree with you. It's not like the companies are giving you your money back if the game doesn't work because of the copy "protection." This EULA that they don't even let you see before you buy the game is unilaterally in their favor. Too bad the buyers can't make their own user agreement, which is automatically considered "agreed to" by the company when the user plonks down his money.
