Case of the Rose Tattoo

Case of the Rose Tattoo - 03/02/05 10:12 PM

I've encountered what seems to be a strange little bug in the game. Whenever I use the hat pin (inventory item), the game crashes to the desktop.

I'm playing the game on XP PRO SP1 with 95 compatibility and to this point the game was running very nicely. I tried it in my 98SE machine and it does the same thing. Thanks to Len and Jenny I have a saved game to get me around this obstacle.

I was wondering if anyone else encountered this same bug, and if anyone knows of a patch or fix for this issue.

Thanks.

From what I can remember, I had this problem as well. Which is why I ran it from Holmes2.bat instead of the .exe file. Once I did that I didn't have the crash with the hatpin.

thanks inferno

I'm not at home right now; but, soon as I get home I most certainly will give that a try.

I'll post the results of the "experiment".

Hi inferno,

The results of my little 'experiment' are as follows:

I determined that, on both my XP and 98SE machines, I was starting the game at the HOLMES2 MS.DOS Batch File, by locating that file and clicking on it to open. I was not using the EXE file.

However, I broke one of my cardinal rules - I didn't read the Readme File before starting the game. duh

I next went to my 98SE machine at the Windows DOS prompt level and installed the game to run in DOS. I opened a saved game and the hat pin worked great - no crash to desk top.

Moral of this story - I should have read the Readme File. slapforehead

Sorry, I guess I should have told you that the game doesn't run very well with windows95 compatibility for XP.

Which is why I wrote the setup walkthrough for it here: Rose Tattoo Setup Walkthrough

enjoy the game

Hi inferno!

I followed your setup walkthrough for the Rose Tattoo and the game installed and ran fine including the sound. However, the game still crashes to the desktop when the hat pin is used. The only time I do not have this crash is when I run the game in DOS. Do you have a setup walkthrough using DOSBOX and VDM Sound to install and run this game? I'm a total novice when it comes to DOSBOX and VDM Sound, and could use your input.

Thanks

You use either DOSBox or VDMSound, not both.

Sorry qadventuregames:

I don't use DOSBOX. But maybe metzomagic or Llewton can help you there.

Did you increase the Config.nt to files=100?
The game didn't crash for me.

Hi inferno,

Yes I had changed my files to 100 and I keep them at 100.

The following is a quote from your setup. "You must also have Vesa drivers enabled on your system for the game to run correctly. VDMSound does offer some Vesa support."

Could you explain a bit more what you do to enable the Vesa drivers? I want to make sure I'm on the same page with you.

thanks for your help.

Re: Case of the Rose Tattoo - 03/10/05 12:13 AM

which video card do you have as well.
and do you have any universal vesa drivers as well? VDM Sound offers minimum vesa support
Which you can enable with the Launchpad.
Besides this I use Univbe and uvesa.

The biggest thing is you must make sure that you run the program in full screen mode.

here is some excellant reading

Hi inferno,

My specs are NVIDIA GeForce FX 5950 Ultra.

Now for some real Duh! questions. Where do I look to see if I have universal vesa drivers? Do they come with XP, or must you download them? Same question on Univbe and Uvesa.

Unfortunately, the reading assignment was Way over my head. slapforehead

Re: Case of the Rose Tattoo - 03/10/05 01:44 AM

XP doesn't come oaded that way unless you specify it (custom built systems)

Please have a look here:

VOGON'S has tons of info regarding vesa drivers
do a Google search using your card + universal vesa drivers.
My Specs & Utilitues

and here:

The Library

There are a number of articles which might help.

Not sure though if your card supports any vesa.
My Nvidia card is an older one which does. You might have to roll back drivers. Check the Nvidia site as well.

Re: Case of the Rose Tattoo - 03/10/05 04:19 PM

qadventuregames - Just to let you know, I played this game on a 98SE and there were certain parts of the game that repeatedly crashed. One was when Holmes and Watson were at the hotair balloon and tried getting into the shed. Another one was when the prostitute runs out into the street and gets killed by an oncoming carriage. The only way I was able to get past these points was by having all the saved games from Len Green (thanks you Len). Then I would play up to the point where his save was at one of these places in the game and use his save. So maybe the problem isn't playing the game in XP but a problem with the game itself.

Been reading the problems you've been having with the hat pin - this happened to me also at this part but I managed to get over this by pressing 'enter ' when using the hat pin instead of the mouse.
Hope this helps

Re: Case of the Rose Tattoo - 03/11/05 12:25 AM

yes it would.... I've been searching through my notes about the game ... it's been 2 years since I played it... for me it did crash twice:

**Once when I needed to use the hatpin
**Once when I needed to use the Trident

and for the life of me I just couldn't remmeber what I did to solve it....

Thank goodness I never throw my notebook away!!!

Here's the trick....... This game is memory hungry (paging file hungry) so on the newer computers which are too fast for this game
use "turbo" set to 40% .... the game will not crash.............and just where did I get this tidbit from????

From our own SYD ..... thank you, Syd!!!
