From Jonathan Boakes - Regarding The Lost Crown, The Last Crown and The First Crown! - 08/05/11 05:18 PM

Were you wondering about the recent talking on the net about the Lost Crown 2 and 3?
Jonathan Boakes was so kind to send a message to Gameboomers to reveal what's going on!

Quote:
There's an fun saying, regarding bus stops, that goes 'you wait an hour for a bus, then three come along at the same time'.

It's been a bit longer than an hour since any 'Crown' news, sorry(!!) but I'm pleased to say that I've been writing the third Crown game, behind the scenes. While making game two, 'The Last Crown - Haunting of Hallowed Isle', I found it logical to carry on through and write the next one while the atmosphere was fresh in my mind.

I've always had plans for a Trilogy, given that three Anglo-Saxon noblemen arrived on Saxton Shore, all those centuries ago.
Ganwulf, Pendread and their father Auldwulf.
Ganwulf, we met in The Lost Crown, but game two concerns his brother, Pendraed. His story takes us out to Hallowed Isle, just off the coast of Saxton. It's been wonderful to find new locations, create new characters, and think up new ghost-stories (the binding fabric of the Crown games).
Basically, I've got a bit addicted to Saxton, with it's folky feel and timeless atmosphere. That's always a good sign!

So, I'm pleased to announce that the third game, 'The First Crown' will follow on next year. Wonderfully confusing titles! The 'first' is the 'last', and all that.

For now, I look forward to finally revealing some scenes from the next instalment, in the next couple of weeks. Hopefully, some scenes will appear via the GDC Expo too!
It seems like an age since Nigel first walked into Saxton, from across the Fens, "Deep, dark, swamp-like water", but I'm buzzing with enthusiasm for the next games. It's a great little world, with peculiar goings on, which is very close to me. While there's interest in my games, I'll keep making them. It really is a privilege to be able to make these things, like mini interactive films, which I enjoy immensely. So expect plenty more from me.

Thank you Jonathan! bravo praise

Re: From Jonathan Boakes - Regarding The Lost Crown, The Last Crown and The First Crown! - 08/11/11 09:50 AM

I totally agree with you Winfrey and JeanK. My only fear is we will find ourselves all mucked up like those of us who wanted so much to play Bracken Tor. I hate bringing that up here, especially since Jonathan has never put us through anything like that.

Re: From Jonathan Boakes - Regarding The Lost Crown, The Last Crown and The First Crown! - 08/11/11 10:47 AM

BubbaJake -- release dates that continually slip sometimes have more to do with the publisher than with the developer. We all want the games sooner rather than later, but it isn't fair to place blame in a specific quarter when we really have no idea what's going on behind the scenes. frown

Re: From Jonathan Boakes - Regarding The Lost Crown, The Last Crown and The First Crown! - 08/11/11 04:57 PM

I totally second what Becky said.I personally was told few times from the developers that their game was ready but the publishers were holding it back for marketing strategy frown

Re: From Jonathan Boakes - Regarding The Lost Crown, The Last Crown and The First Crown! - 08/17/11 11:27 AM

Actually, I'm not blaming Matt OR Jonathan, and I guess I wasn't clear with what I said and how I said it. I can't imagine what Matt is going through with his first game since Barrow Hill. I'm sorry for mouthing off about it but,I AM STILL put off about whatever is going on. I STILL hate the fact that gamers are put through this. I can ONLY speak for gamers. Suffering in silence does not work. So, what should we do. I want to play Bracken Tor and I'm sure Matt Clarke wants us to play it. Can he do anything about what's happening? Can we complain to anyone who can and will help?

Re: From Jonathan Boakes - Regarding The Lost Crown, The Last Crown and The First Crown! - 08/17/11 02:59 PM

OK, for myself. I said this because I AM a gamer.
Speak for yourself for what YOU should do, (as to what drugs, pills, etc. I should or should not take, I will be the judge). I will assume responsibility for myself since I cannot speak up for anyone else. I apologize to others for misspeaking.
Thank you.

Re: From Jonathan Boakes - Regarding The Lost Crown, The Last Crown and The First Crown! - 08/17/11 03:22 PM

BubbaJake -- at this stage, I don't think there actually is anything gamers can do to influence the pace of the Bracken Tor release. It never hurts to post how much you are looking forward to the game (developers and publishers do read these threads). But I don't think there's anything else we can do except maintain a stiff upper lip and be patient. pacify
I feel your pain and it is frustrating! I've seen delays often enough over the years that I try to play something else to keep my mind off the wait. burger

Re: From Jonathan Boakes - Regarding The Lost Crown, The Last Crown and The First Crown! - 08/17/11 03:59 PM

Becky, thank you for your response. I agree with what you say, since it's only making things worse to try to do otherwise. I won't go into why this is so important to me, and I HAVE no choice other than to wait it out. I have replayed a bunch of older games, still am, and I guess I need to reinstall more NOW!! Again, I sincerely apologize to ANYONE I have insulted or annoyed.
I'm feeling MUCH better now.

Resident nutjob. (not meant as an insult to anyone)

Re: From Jonathan Boakes - Regarding The Lost Crown, The Last Crown and The First Crown! - 08/17/11 04:30 PM

In this day and age of developers and publishers going out of business and entire countries economies hitting rock bottom I am happy that any publisher is still distributing adventure games. The distributor's that are left don't seem to care much about the adventure genre as it is no longer as profitable as it once was. So if a publisher wants to keep postponing a game to release it at a time that they deem will make them the most return then so be it but please keep using your money to bring us these games we love so much. But in this case it is not the publisher that wants to hold back the game. It looks by the following that it is Matt Clark himself that has postponed it to add content for us and to fine tune and bring us a better experience.

A Matt Clark quote after the first delay:
Quote:
Developer Matt Clark of Shadow Tor Studios said: "It is disappointing that Bracken Tor's release has had to be put back to Q1 next year, but we felt that the extra polish and additional features that we will be able to add to the title will ensure that those people who are eagerly anticipating the release will not be disappointed.”

And this statement on the publishers web page
Quote:
Haarlem, The Netherlands – 15 April 2011 – Videogames publisher Iceberg Interactive today announced that the release of Bracken Tor: The Time of Tooth and Claw for PC has been postponed to June 10th 2011. The indie developer of the highly-anticipated horror adventure, Shadow Tor Studios from Cornwall, UK, has been adding much content over the past months but needs more time to tweak and fine-tune the game.

So, in fact, these delays are a good thing in the eyes of this adventure game player
