Jane Jensen Announces Moebius -- A Spiritual Successor to Gabriel Knight - 04/16/12 08:14 PM

And the vote is in!

Check the concept arts HERE.

Quote:
Veteran game designer Jane Jensen launched Pinkerton Road Studio just two weeks ago, and this weekend the project’s early backers got to vote for the first adventure game the studio will make. Drum roll please… with 61% of the vote, the winner is Moebius!

Jane is running a Kickstarter campaign to raise funds for Moebius’s development. As of this writing, we’re more than halfway to the $300k funding goal: http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1005365109/jane-jensens-pinkerton-road-2012-2013-csg

Backer rewards include behind-the-scenes involvement in the development, downloadable and physical copies of Pinkerton Road’s games, and “design bibles” from Jane’s Gabriel Knight days. (More rewards will be added this week!) If enough funds are raised, Pinkerton Road will pursue a second adventure game this year as well.

Okay, enough of the backstory! Here’s the scoop on Moebius...

The Story
Moebius is a metaphysical sci-fi thriller in the vein of Fringe, Jane’s novel Dante’s Equation, and (of course!) Gabriel Knight. Antiquities dealer Malachi Rector hunts down artifacts all over the world and compiles dossiers on their history. He has a knack for sensing “the soul” of an object. After his upscale Manhattan store is destroyed in a fire, Rector is hired by millionaire Amber Dexter to investigate a series of events and document them in his meticulous way.

The first event is the death of a young woman in Venice, who was found hanging from a bridge. As Rector investigates her life, he soon realizes that this beautiful and talented young woman -- and the interrupted path of her life -- had great hidden significance. It appears that Amber Dexter and his associates are playing with the fabric of life in a way Rector never imagined possible. Even he, Rector himself, is part of a larger pattern.

Malachi Rector must figure out who is doing what -- and whether their intentions are for good or ill -- before he can decide whether to play his pre-scripted role or try to change the outcome.

Game Details
Moebius will be a point and click, third person adventure game with a 2D graphic novel look. The game will have two modes: Casual Adventure and True Adventure. Casual Adventure mode includes hints, a hotspot revealer, and a simplified interface. True Adventure will be more of a challenge along the lines of Jane’s past adventure games (Gabriel Knight, Gray Matter). Assuming Pinkerton Road meets its $300k funding goal, Moebius is planned to release around March 2013.

Happy Gaming!

I wonder if Ms. Dexter is ambidextrous? laugh

It sounds like the kind of intricate story that I particularly enjoy.

Thanks Ana! wave

Heh... waiting for Jane to confirm the name, it might actually be Amble Dexter. It showed up both ways in the PDF, chances are one is a typo. (Unless they're a hilariously named married couple!)

Amble and Amber Dexter! I like the idea! Maybe they aren't married but are good/bad twins?

I picked Moebius myself, but I really hope we see all three of them at a certain point.

Looking forward to more news on Moebius! happydance

Thanks!

Jane has now added e-books for the novelizations of Gabriel Knights 1 and 2 for the $50 and up backers. I am just so excited for this!! I've wanted to read those books for a long time, but I've had the hardest time finding them. Now I'll finally be able to read them. happydance

Re: Jane Jensen Announces Moebius -- A Spiritual Successor to Gabriel Knight - 05/06/12 03:35 PM

The rights to those games don't belong to her so I assume the Gabriel Knight name doesn't either and it would be extremely odd to have Joe Smith as the main character's name while he was GK in every other particular. I'd say the odds of it being another GK game are about zero.

I am curious to know what you guys think another GK would be about since she seems to have wrapped it up with a thump in GK3.

Joe Smith?

Gabriel has to be reunited with Grace.
Posted By: traveler

Re: Jane Jensen Announces Moebius -- A Spiritual Successor to Gabriel Knight - 05/06/12 05:12 PM

Why would Grace want to reunite with a guy who treats her like she doesn't have a brain? (Never mind, I know opposites attract.)

I said Joe Smith as an example. JJ can't use the Gabriel Knight name, not unless she has the rights to it.

I'm confused! According to the kickstarter page JJ's goal was $300,000 & it stands at $304,172 with 12 days to go? Where does the 1 million come from? smile

If Big Finish Games (Chris Jones and Aaron Conners) could buy back the rights to Tex Murphy seems likely Pinkerton Road could get the rights to Gabriel Knight. (Now if The Two Guy From Andromeda could just get Space Quest back)

Re: Jane Jensen Announces Moebius -- A Spiritual Successor to Gabriel Knight - 05/07/12 11:38 PM

Jane just posted a new piece of concept art for Moebius. You can see it here.

The concept was done by Andy Hoyos, one of Sierra's old artists (he worked on KQ5, KQ7, and Phantasmagoria, among other games). Jane says on the update that he was one of Sierra's best artists so Roberta Williams always snagged him for her own projects. lol But now Jane finally gets to work with him herself!

What does everyone think of the art? It's not what I was expecting but it has a cool look... more graphic novel like than, say, Gray Matter.
Posted By: traveler

Re: Jane Jensen Announces Moebius -- A Spiritual Successor to Gabriel Knight - 05/08/12 12:13 AM

fov,

You had to ask or I might have kept shut since it isn't good form to criticize Jane Jensen's games, it seems.

"Graphic novel", in my book, is just a pretentious term for comic book and what I saw of Grey Matter in trailers made it pretty obvious to me that there was an extensive use of exceptionally bad comic book art. As far as I'm concerned, using it is a cheap cop-out; instead of hiring really good artists and animators, developers are beginning to go for this dreck.

I realize I'm bucking the current trend, which seems to be the notion that graphics don't matter if the story is good, but they do to me. I'm not buying a game that looks like that, I don't care who writes it. I'd rather play a Frogwares game, a game like The Book of Unwritten Tales or struggle through an RPG like The Witcher 2, where the developers have respect for the gamer and the game's look. Extremely good artists and animators worked on those games. Surely there must be many more like them for Pinkerton Road to turn to.

Re: Jane Jensen Announces Moebius -- A Spiritual Successor to Gabriel Knight - 05/08/12 01:29 AM

Are you specifically reacting to the new concept art? Or do you just dislike "graphic novel style," in general?

Of course your opinion is valid, I'm not trying to argue. I'm just not sure if your comments are specific to the Moebius artwork that was released today, or more about Gray Matter...?

Personally, I didn't like Gray Matter's cutscene art at all (although I thought the backgrounds were very nice). That being said - Moebius seems to be going in a much different direction than Gray Matter, which surprised me a bit at first, but I think it's an exciting direction. In particular, the piece by Andy Hoyos that I linked to above looks nothing like the Gray Matter cutscenes -- to me that's encouraging!

I like the style of the concept art, but I don't know how close to the final product it will be. Comparing the concept art of some of the casual games I've played to the finished product, the actual game may be far more realistic looking. Jane does say "This is not a regular game environment, it's more of a concept piece to set the style of the game." So we don't know whether the actual game will have such dramatic scenery.

Even assuming the final product has graphics just like the concept art, a lot will depend on how well the scene is animated. After seeing how well some casual games have been animated, I don't think many gamers will be satisfied with a game composed of static screens, even pretty ones.

Re: Jane Jensen Announces Moebius -- A Spiritual Successor to Gabriel Knight - 05/10/12 02:11 PM

I don't understand the complaints. This is concept art, not a screenshot. duh

Personally, I think the art is beautiful, and I'm happy to know that the artist behind King's Quest 5 is working on it. I always thought that was such a beautiful game for its time. thumbsup

Can someone tell me what is the good reason to upgrade from $50 to $100? And how I can upgrade when I have not even received any confirmation e-mail apart from having paid $50 in the first place? I have access to nothing. Where is that upgrade button, or even confirmation that I have contributed? Have you all received something I have not, even after 24 hours after joining Pinkerton Road Studios? Help! There are only 12 hours left to go! And it is already 2h19 in the morning in London, I will fall asleep soon and miss the deadline.

When you click the Manage Your Pledge button you'll be able to change the amount up top in green to whatever amount you feel like.

You could also just scroll down and click the $100 Tier (remember to add $15 if none US) and then at bottom click continue to get to Amazon, which is where you'll pay.

After having done that, you'll get an email from them about how much you pledged etc. smile

Tomer, if we don't make the $450k, and stay around $425ish or so, do we get only one or the other - either dialogue or orchestra? grin

Wish I could keep up with the comments, but too much to do! I've been so busy lately, which is good, but sadly keeps me from other things I would like to do as well. frown Glad you're keeping up with it, though. Gameboomers is represented! grin

Venus, unfortunately we can't stay around the 425$ish cause we're already on 440K (with paypal) :-)
We have about a week to get 10K in paypal - I think it's pretty certain we'll get our orchestra and dialogue. Even if they'll be a little short - it'll do the game so much good to have these, I doubt they won't make it.

It has been incredible these past few days. Thank you, everyone who supported and joined us. I'm sorry I kept pushing the board's limit and making the mods wonder if they should kick me out, I just couldn't help it :-)

I hope Ms. Jensen is happy with the final result. I don't think she's slept a wink during the whole campaign, she's been so busy giving us new information, videos and interviews!

Can she relax a bit, or is this just the beginning of another marathon effort?

Becky, to be honest - I think some fans slept even less :-) She couldn't have done it without a very passionate and faithful community.

Anyway, I hope she rests a little, drinks some wine and starts developing her stories :-)
Same for Robert and his music.

Re: Jane Jensen Announces Moebius -- A Spiritual Successor to Gabriel Knight - 05/20/12 11:28 AM

And now I hope her fans and backers will be patient if there are delays, which is normal in game development. When you read the behind the scene of the development of Gabriel Knight 3, it really makes you realise how much work really goes into making one great quality adventure and that many miracles are required for them to get done on time and on budget, if at all:

Postmortem: Sierra Studios' Gabriel Knight 3
http://www.gamasutra.com/view/feature/3127/postmortem_sierra_studios_.php

Budget: Originally well below $2 million, final budget $4.2 million.
Length of Development: Almost 3 years.
Release Date: November 1999 (over a year late).

I suddenly developed an unbound admiration for the achievement of Gabriel Knight 3, I'm going to play it again now keeping in mind the hard work that went into it and the miracle of its existence.

As the gamer community who backed Jane and Robert we must be ready to accept delays, and to help further if necessary at some point. $450,000 for the type of high standard adventures Jane Jensen is capable of is not a lot of money and one year to deliver is a very short time.

At least as backers we will have an inside view behind the scene and see all the problems that will arise, and we'll be more understanding than publishers perhaps. I'm sure it will be as entertaining if not more than playing the games themselves, and perhaps this is what we have contributed to, primarily.

We love Jane and Robert, we love the games they're making and we trust them enough to back them up, and I'm sure we will be patient. And eventually we will enjoy the fruit of paying upfront for probably the most exciting adventures to come.
Posted By: Tomer

Re: Jane Jensen Announces Moebius -- A Spiritual Successor to Gabriel Knight - 05/20/12 05:55 PM

Rmt - totally! One of the main nightmares of game developers, I think, is that they're always forced to work under a terrible time pressure. You can almost always notice how end of games are rushed away - be it Gray Matter, Myst 4... it really happens often. And they keep whining about that, too.
We do indeed have a planned time, but I'm pretty serious that fans won't cause as much pressure as producers do.
It must feel soooo nice to not have a publisher telling you what you have to do, and how, and when. They already have their money and they can do with it as they will. If they eventually won't give us a satisfying product, the market will show the results - but now we'll know it has nothing to do with terrible publishers!

Re: Jane Jensen Announces Moebius -- A Spiritual Successor to Gabriel Knight - 05/21/12 08:11 AM

Let's think about this, why would they say Mystery Game X for the second game instead of announcing it? They said there was some sort of deal made, can you think of anything else but GK4? It must be a deal with Activision who has the rights. Of course, I am only speculating. You have only until 25 May to join on the Pinkerton Road Studio website and still benefit from the incentives and being able to beta test the game. I don't regret joining...
Posted By: Tomer

Re: Jane Jensen Announces Moebius -- A Spiritual Successor to Gabriel Knight - 05/21/12 06:26 PM

If Mystery game X is GK4, I'd die on the spot, and would consider my 280$ pledge the smartest decision I've ever made :-)
Posted By: Temporaryscars

Re: Jane Jensen Announces Moebius -- A Spiritual Successor to Gabriel Knight - 05/21/12 06:29 PM

Problem is, without gk confirmed, I'm only willing to donate $50. With it, I'd double my amount.
Posted By: rmt

Re: Jane Jensen Announces Moebius -- A Spiritual Successor to Gabriel Knight - 05/21/12 06:52 PM

It would have been the greatest argument, if they had said we will do GK4. But what if the deal falls through with Activision, or still remains to be negotiated? To get money from backers would be deceptive without guarantee.

At the same time to make us believe it is GK4 if it is not would equally be disappointing to all of us. If they had a Mystery Game X that is not GK4, when everyone is speculating that it is, there would be no harm in simply stating that it is not GK4, in order to prevent disappointment.

It can't be something smaller than Gray Matter 2, would that not be the most important project after Moebius? And what else could it be, that would require so much secrecy and excitement, and bypass Gray Matter 2? I can think of nothing. Tomer, what have others speculated it could be?

Jane said she approached Activision twice about GK, and also said that it would now be easier with their own studio to approach them more directly. I think it is a safe bet that it is at least GK related. But true, we have no confirmation.
Posted By: Tomer

Re: Jane Jensen Announces Moebius -- A Spiritual Successor to Gabriel Knight - 05/21/12 07:06 PM

Rmt, I have no idea.
I'm almost not sure I'd want it to be GK4 because it sounds unreasonable enough to develop two games in one year - let alone if one of them is GK4, which is one of the most anticipated AG games. (I hope it's the last one - I don't want to wait 10 years for the next one. I think it needs to be amazing, and it needs a proper ending. Doesn't have to be GOOD, but an ending nevertheless!)
Otherwise it could also be GM2.
It could also be something we've never heard of.
I really have no idea.
I agree though, Jane has been saying often that chances for GK4 are really high now, and she did mention 1-2 months.
As the Germans would say: mal sehen. We'll see.

Re: Jane Jensen Announces Moebius -- A Spiritual Successor to Gabriel Knight - 05/21/12 07:28 PM

Would I love to see a new game featuring Gabriel Knight?...You Bet I would! Do I think its the Mystery X game...no. First off I thought I read somewhere earlier on that Jane actually said that the Mystery X game was not GK4 but I am unable to find the article or interview I read it from. Leaving that aside, I re-watched the Update #16 where Jane announces the Mystery X second game. In the video she says that the Mystery X game will be free to all CSG members. I really can't believe that they would give away almost 6000 copies of arguably one of the most anticipated game series of all time. Further more if Jane and Activision have gone into a partnership together in a GK4 I can't see Activision wanting to give away 6000 copies for nothing without some kind of DRM to protect there investment. Trying to think logically and more probable I can see in the Future that Activision will contract with Pinkerton to develop the game and then Activision will publish it under their own title thus maintaining the rights and profits.

LOL..of course I could be wrong as I am just thinking off the top of my head. I wish it were true but I am in agreement that a GK 4 should not be rushed and farmed out so development should take more than a year.

Just thinking out loud...what do you think?

I thought she said $16 members had to choose either Moebius or X. $50 members and higher got both.

Re: Jane Jensen Announces Moebius -- A Spiritual Successor to Gabriel Knight - 05/21/12 07:53 PM

You could all be right, we will have to wait and see. I guess this is all part of the new game...

I am unable to decide if another GK4 would be better than an original new idea from Jane. The truth is, pretty much anything she would decide on is bound to be great.

I really would like Gray Matter 2 sooner rather than later, but Moebius might turn out to be something even more impressive than anything Jane has done before. She did say that for their first game they cannot fail, that it must be great!

I think to be a CSG Member you have to have donated at least at the $50 Tier. Anything below you are a CSG Supporter. At about the 2:30 mark of Update #16 she states that Mystery X will be free to CSG Members so I assume that leaves out anyone below the $50 Tier. Is that what you hear too? Update #16 Video

Re: Jane Jensen Announces Moebius -- A Spiritual Successor to Gabriel Knight - 05/21/12 09:40 PM

At 3 minutes and 40 seconds she clearly states that at $16 and $30 you can choose between Moebius or Mystery Game X. Does that answer the question? I also remember her saying again in another video that you would not have to choose right away at that level of pledging, that you could wait until the second game is out. I have copied below the pledges as per the kickstarter website.

About Mystery Game X, Robert says in that video 16 that they have been talking to publishers, hence Mystery Game X. What can we read into this? And why would they need to speak to publishers? The whole idea of kickstarter is to avoid publishers. Does it mean GK4?

Or more probably it means joining with a publisher in order to cover the difference in costs to get a second really good quality adventure game? We know now that this kind of quality we hope for can cost around 2 million each game. And a second game was originally only planned if they were to reach $600,000. The entrance of another publisher into it could simply mean that there will be a second game even if that goal was not reached. But It is all mysterious.

I did not get the vibe it was GK4, but I could be wrong.

For clarity:

PLEDGE $16 OR MORE - "CSG SUPPORTER": One of our studio releases this CSG cycle (your choice) on PC download. Access to quarterly Pinkerton Road CSG studio updates and our CSG-only forum.

PLEDGE $30 OR MORE - "CSG SUPPORTER II": Digital download of our "best of the year" game music soundtrack, monthly CSG wallpaper showcasing our latest art, participation in our "A/B" test group (give input on our games) -- and all previous tiers' reward goodies.

PLEDGE $50 OR MORE - "CSG MEMBER": ALL of our studio releases this CSG cycle on PC download, access to monthly Pinkerton Road studio updates, Beta test invite, pdf of Jane's design bibles for this cycle, digitally signed -- and all prevoius tiers' reward godies.

PLEDGE $51 OR MORE - THIS HAS BEEN ADDED TO THE $50 TIER -- the GK1 and GK2 novels as e-book. (applies to all tiers above, too).

What does it mean exactly when they say the games will be DRM Free, almost as a selling point? What does it change whether they are or not?

Does it just mean they will be downloadable, but with DRM we would have to have a DVD version because there would be a security thing like SafeDisc or something?

It means the games won't refuse to run because of incompatible copy "protection." It means antivirus won't block the game because the antivirus' heuristic scanning detects that the actions of the copy "protection" resemble those of a virus.

Whether the game is on DVD or downloadable has nothing to do with whether it uses DRM or not. DRM can be on both downloadable or disc versions of games. Even the online activation type of DRM isn't limited to games sold by download any more.

Re: Jane Jensen Announces Moebius -- A Spiritual Successor to Gabriel Knight - 05/21/12 10:48 PM

Mystery Game X really could be any of the (10 or so, from what I understand) adventure game ideas that Ms. Jensen has in mind for Pinkerton Road in the future, assuming that she's submitted some of them to publishers in the past. A publisher might have been interested, then seen how well the Kickstarter project was going, and decided to go ahead an fund part of the game.

I don't think it's GK4. I think it's possible it's even Anglophile Adventure. But I am often wrong.

Often. grin

But again, I'm hesitant to donate without knowing that it's GK4. I'd throw a lot of money their way if it were confirmed...even more if they could secure Tim Curry to do the VW.

Re: Jane Jensen Announces Moebius -- A Spiritual Successor to Gabriel Knight - 05/24/12 01:57 PM

I would love it if it was GK4, but honestly, I'm equally excited to see Jane branch out into other games. She's one of the best game authors out there, at least in my opinion, so seeing a variety of stories from her is very exciting to me. Yes I do want to see GK4 eventually, but I'm also very interested in Anglophile Adventure, for example, which would be something very different from her other works, while still including the mystery element.

I'm also very interested in GM2. Even something entirely different that we haven't heard of yet would be nice. I kind of hope it isn't a remake of GK1, since I've already played that game, but I could see it being for a "greater good" and will accept it if that's the case. smile

Re: Jane Jensen Announces Moebius -- A Spiritual Successor to Gabriel Knight - 05/24/12 04:56 PM

The Anglophile Adventure could turn out to be even better than the other projects. I suspect a castle and intrigues at the royal court, Jane Jensen style. Might be worth having that before Gray Matter 2. Perhaps not so much sci-fi or paranormal, still, it could be a very nice adventure, full of the beautiful English countryside which is one of the reasons why I live in England.

You can read this however you wish, but what Jane says in this interview is certainly promising for something related to Gabriel Knight in the future, even if it is not Mystery Game X. We might even get some news within a month or two, that is very soon:

"Jensen admits that she's pitched executives on a new Knight game twice since 1999. Following a merger with Sierra owner Vivendi, those rights now belong to Activision. With Activision recently opening up the Sierra archives to allow Telltale Games to create a King's Quest reboot, there could be hope for Gabriel Knight once more."

"I have talked to them again recently," Jensen says, "and I think there's a good chance that it's going to work out. It's not going to be ..." She pauses, weighing her words. "I think there's a good chance that we'll be doing something with Gabriel Knight in the future." There's the hint of a smile in her tone. "Just give it a month or two."

The interview is dated 7 May 2012:

That's certainly intriguing. grin

Re: Jane Jensen Announces Moebius -- A Spiritual Successor to Gabriel Knight - 05/27/12 01:51 PM

And this on 9 May 2012:

"With the extra funding coming in, Jensen and Holmes have promised that work has started on a second, untitled game they’re temporarily calling “Mystery Project X.” That game is distinguished from Moebius in that Pinkerton Road will not be publishing the title. While Kickstarter contributors will still receive a copy of the game as part of their pledge, “Mystery Project X” will be distributed by an established game publisher and Jensen has intimated that Pinkerton Road will not retain the license to the game."

"That Pinkerton is partnering with a publisher for “Mystery Game X” is strong evidence that the game will be in an established series. When we last spoke with Jensen, she said that she hoped that Pinkerton would eventually get to work on Gabriel Knight 4, a sequel fans have been waiting on for thirteen years. Activision Blizzard became the owners of the Gabriel Knight franchise after acquiring Sierra in 2008."

http://www.digitaltrends.com/gaming/jane.../#ixzz1w4t537Ja

I read in another interview that Jane started Pinkerton Road Studio because she was not willing to give the intellectual properties of her games anymore, especially Moebius. The fact that she has the IP of Gray Matter even though it was published at DTP proves she is serious about it. Mystery Game X is therefore something she does not have the rights to and probably can't get them. It cannot be any of the 10 ideas she had recently for Pinkerton Road Studio, it cannot be Gray Matter II or Anglophile Adventure.

If it is not Gabriel Knight 4, it could however be something she worked on at Oberon, one one those casual games she developed and feels would do a great adventure. It would certainly be a way to bridge the gap and merge together the casual game and the adventure markets, something she said she is keen on.

Re: Jane Jensen Announces Moebius -- A Spiritual Successor to Gabriel Knight - 05/27/12 10:47 PM

Why would I be exited, she said we'd be excited, about a causal game I never played being converted to adventure game?

Re: Jane Jensen Announces Moebius -- A Spiritual Successor to Gabriel Knight - 05/27/12 10:53 PM

GuybrushThreepwood, this is true. In that case I can only think it is something related to Gabriel Knight. We will have to wait and see.

Would people prefer a remake of GK1 or a whole new Gabriel Knight 4?

After all, maybe there is a way to simply keep the voices and music of GK1 and only remake the images?

Re: Jane Jensen Announces Moebius -- A Spiritual Successor to Gabriel Knight - 05/28/12 12:10 AM

Personally, I would prefer a new game, as I've already played GK1. It could be GK4, GM2, Anglophile or something else. Doesn't matter, as long as it's a new Jane Jensen game. A GK1 remake would be nice, but I personally don't need one. However, since it seems it's leaning in that direction, I can accept it if it will introduce new audiences to the GK series and perhaps bring GK4 that much closer. And if I hadn't pledged, I would purchase it irregardless. smile

I am with Venus and others on this one, I would rather see a Brand New Game rather than a voice update on an Old game, We are Overdue for a new Good Old adventure game, so please, Pretty please with honey on top, Make a new GK4 or GM2, and if there is any $$ left over, then do the voice over for GK1.

Re: Jane Jensen Announces Moebius -- A Spiritual Successor to Gabriel Knight - 05/28/12 03:07 AM

I get very confused reading some of the threads about GK4 ....

Does anyone actually "have the right" to make a GK4 ??

Re: Jane Jensen Announces Moebius -- A Spiritual Successor to Gabriel Knight - 05/28/12 03:24 PM

Well since Activision now have the IP (the rights) to the GK series, I guess they could, if they would smile

Btw - can anyone get the pinktertonroad.com to load properly?

I think it's under some sort of BOTS attack lol

Has anyone received any reply from the Pinkerton Road forum website? They have a CSG closed forum (I'm a member..or at least donated 50.00 to the CSG Moebius project) and have never been able to access the CSG forum as it is password protected. All messages to the webmaster and the contact email listed have gone unanswered. Jane J, do you read this forum?
