My take on Gray Matter - comments, please? - 10/27/12 10:59 PM

Having played Gray Matter a month ago, I think Gray Matter is
Click to reveal..
about a doctor/shrink whose wife was seduced by evil and fantasy (believing she's a fairy) as well as getting deceived by it so she stages an accident to mislead her hubby (David Styles) into believing she died in a fire since, ensnared by her fairy fantasy she made fairies her first love, & she felt trapped/hemmed in my being her hubby's wife, so upon misleading David she slipped away, changed her name from Laura to Angela and started over without hubby in the picture (at the college where Sam unravels the mystery) and finds her. Once Sam found her, the evil forces that Laura/Angela is in love with attacks and wrecks the college cafeteria, then David pieces the rest of the mystery together, and they all (Sam, Laura, and David) end up at the church where Sam traps Laura with the fairy lamp so David can use his shrink skills vs delusional mental patient to convince wifey back into her right mind and get wifey Laura back, thanks to Sam's hard work and David's trust in Sam and patience with Sam

What do you guys this of my take on GM?

Did you play the game? There's a part near the end where Sam snoops into Angela's dorm room in the grad student hall and finds evidence that Laura's interested in fairies.

Then at the very end (after church scene) Laura perches up on one of the church rafters and says something about fairies can fly then she tries to jump, David catches her, etc.

Yes I played it when it first came out but don't remember the fairies at all. Perhaps I need to give it another go sometime:-)

Well, it's certainly a creative "take." Some questions:

Click to reveal..
Since they buried a charred body from the car that David and Laura were in, how did Laura escape? If she had escaped, wouldn't they have noticed?

Why didn't David realize that Angela was Laura the whole time she was participating in experiments that he was running?

If David "caught" Laura/Angela and saved her when she jumped from the balcony in the church, why wasn't she in the last scene, and why did everyone act as though Angela was dead?

I'll have to check my gameplay screenshots (with the dialogue) to answer this, Becky - so perhaps this can wait until I get to Barnes & Noble w/ my laptop sometime this coming week (if this can wait until then)?

I certainly hope David doesn't take wifey Laura back!!! I like Sam and think she can get him into a normal life again.

The day Laura dies in the car accident, Angela comes to Dr. Styles for consultation about her abilities. This is revealed by the shrink who ist Dr. Styles friend by hypnotising him.
Dr. Styles, and we as the player, see Laura die in the car. There is no possiblitie that she has ascaped.
Sam discovers that Angela was jealous that Dr. Styles was so in love with Laura...

.. There are so many details in the game, in the conversations and in the story-arc that your idea of the game is a bit too fantastic. I am really flabbergasted. No offence ment.

Did someone beat me to answering Becky's questions? Or could there always be other answers to Becky's questions (according to my take on GM) by any chance? headscratch

This is an open forum to all members cruise. If you wanted it to be a private conversation you need to do it via PM. Anyone can and is encouraged to answer on the public threads.

It was supposed to be open to all members. But I wonder if there can be more than one set of answers to Becky's questions (provided by different members according to their viewponts on the game), and I'm thinking is, possibility, yes, definitely, there can be more than set of answers to Becky's questions?

Do you mean: is it possible to speculate about various ways those questions could be answered? Or do you mean: is there a definite answer -- one that the game designer would agree is "correct"? grin Unless, of course, Jane Jensen wanted there to be several different interpretations.

I just replayed Gray Matter. So much better the second time around, for some strange reason. I actually enjoyed it this time. laugh

seagul's summary is the same as mine. There is considerable dialogue/explanation in the cut scenes at the end that lays this out quite clearly.

Intriguing. Care to speculate as to why the second time around was better? sherlock

Re: My take on Gray Matter - comments, please? - 10/28/12 07:58 PM

A combination of a better graphics card (hence a smoother gaming experience) and a drastically reduced expectation of a good time. lol I was irritated witless the first time I played this. I didn't like Sam's character, and the movement was terribly sluggish (graphics card issue).

I still found the handdrawn cut scenes a bit slapdash and lazy, but overall gameplay much more enjoyable, particularly the ability to check your chapter progress.

I must be mellowing with age. Ugh. sick

Yes, I meant, is it possible to speculate on different ways these questions could be answered.

I was not too interested in Jane Jensen's answer, but just different ways that people can interpret the game (I interpreted GM from a Bibical point of view).

What do you think, Becky?

Rushes -- rah for new computers! (I know the pompoms are your FAVORITE graemlin.) NOT!

Mellowing can mean living longer, right? grin (Longevity goes along with laid-backness -- it's a scientific fact. Sort of.)

I'd like to play this one a second time too, now that I know all.

Cruise -- well, you can interpret anything in life any number of ways until you bump up against reality.

For a game, what's important is if you enjoyed it, so I suppose even if everyone else thinks a certain interpretation is wrong, that may not matter at all to you.

Becky, your recall of minutiae impresses me no end. Pink pompoms are indeed evil. zombie
