Big Fish Game Sale & Holmes vs. Ripper Question

Big Fish Game Sale & Holmes vs. Ripper Question - 06/21/13 09:27 PM

I don't keep my Big Fish acct active all the time, but I reactivate it now and then to catch a good sale. Right now, with the code SUMMER, all games are $4.99; sale expires June 23.

I think this might be a good time to buy some more Nancy Drew games for myself. I've only played through Phantom of Venice. So I could get enough Nancy Drews to fill a punch card! yes

Ok, and here's my question about Sherlock Holmes vs. Jack the Ripper. I never bought this because I thought it might be too grizzly. Is it any worse than The Awakened was? I played that one, and while there were some bad scenes, I still enjoyed most of the game. I did like the Arsene Lupin one better though.

lanlynk,

I may be wrong about this, but adventure games on BigFish are usually redone to be accessible to casual players and not for the better if one can go by what the developers did to Syberia to sell it there. Get it somewhere else, somewhere you know it's the adventure game you expect.

As far as the game goes, I enjoyed it. It's dark, there isn't much 'fun' in it as there was in SH vs. Arsene Lupin (the scene with Queen Victoria, for instance) but it's a good game. The Awakened happens to be my favorite of the SH games so I have to say it's better than The Ripper but The Ripper is a good game, not as gory as The Awakened, IMO, and you'll probably like the detection board. I did.

Traveler, I hadn't heard about the games being different on Big Fish. My Syberia games are on discs, but I did buy the Sherlock Holmes Awakened and Lupin games from Big Fish. I didn't notice them being edited or simplified. Of course, maybe I wouldn't have noticed since I hadn't played them from discs before. I did see that Big Fish is selling the first Syberia game in 3 parts.

So are the downloadable versions of Nancy Drew different than the boxed versions? On Amazon too? All my Nancy Drews have been discs. This would be my first time to purchase downloaded Nancy games.

Hmm, I need to rethink my purchase plans here.

Thanks for the info about Holmes vs. Ripper. I like the Sherlock games.

If you're asking me about Nancy Drew, I have no idea, lanlynk. I am not a fan of the perky Nancy or her horrible interface.

So, Ripper isn't in parts? Then maybe you have hope of getting the game as it should be.

Gil, the adventure games are not altered on BigFish, the only ones that were changed were the ones that Anuman acquired from Microids like Syberia. BigFish doesn't alter them, it's the developer (Anuman) that decided to do it.

The Nancy Drew games are Her Interactive and they are altered.

LOL ... well, I have to agree with you about some of the mechanics of Nancy Drew games. However, the thing that started slowing me down in buying these games was the action, arcade, and timed sequences that always seem to show up in Nancy Drew. Those things are not my forte, despite my being a fan of Dark Side RPGs!

@ Marian & BrownEyedTigre: Thanks for the clarification. smile I guess the Syberia issue was another example of how things can go wrong in the gaming business.

EDIT: Browsing at Big Fish, I just noticed that Amerzone and Dracula: The Path of the Dragon were also being sold in 3 parts. FYI

Worse than the games being divided in 3 parts is when they remove your ability to save whenever you want to and provide you with only a single save that is automatic.

If I were the one who had created Syberia, I would be screaming bloody murder at the mess Anuman made of the game to sell it on BigFish. I don't know if I played a demo of the Anuman 'version' of Syberia or if I watched it on YouTube...it's been a while...but I thought then that they had butchered it. Someone who has never played the original game might think it's fine; it's a shame they will never know what a really wonderful experience Microids' Syberia is compared to that three parter. It's not just divided into parts, it's ruined, IMO.

Actually, Benoit Sokal the Syberia creator signed a deal with Anuman to make Syberia 3.

Sounds like selling it in three parts is the Flashing Sign of Warning to what's really bad. Did they mess up Syberia 2 also? It was a Microids game, but Big Fish isn't selling it in parts.

Sherlock Holmes is Frogwares, so I guess should be ok.

"Actually, Benoit Sokal the Syberia creator signed a deal with Anuman to make Syberia 3."

And that after years of showing no interest at all in another Syberia. Wasn't he making noises about using another game engine for a 3D game of some sort and referring to Syberia's format as antiquated? Obviously I'm hazy on it but I know he was not exactly enthusiastic about a Syberia 3.

Ok, so I went crazy at Big Fish last night and bought up several games at sale prices. I do this every couple of years; then deactivate myself. lol

Sherlock Holmes vs Jack the Ripper
Virtual Families 2
Shaban
Nightmares from the Deep: The Cursed Heart
A Series of Unfortunate Events
8 Nancy Drew games (#19-26) rolleyes

With my 2 punch card freebies and one Daily Deal, I got 13 games for the average price of $4.22. But I'll have to live to be 100 to play all the games I now have! As the merchants in Skyrim say, "Me, I call them treasures!" laugh
