Announcing Obduction brought to you by Cyan - The Creators of Myst - 10/17/13 03:50 PM

An all-new, immersive adventure game from the award-winning creators of Myst and Riven.

You can view the Kickstarter Here.

Quote:

Ob`duc´tion, n.1. The act of drawing or laying over, as a covering.

Obduction is an all-new, real-time, first-person adventure that harkens back to the spirit of Cyan’s earlier games Myst and Riven. Obduction resurrects that incredible feeling of suddenly finding yourself in the middle of a new world to explore, discover, solve, and become part of.

This year marks the 20th anniversary of the launch of Myst, one of the best-selling computer games in history. The Myst name is widely recognized as uniquely defining a new kind of gaming - amazingly immersive worlds where the point is to understand your environment rather than test your reflexes. The Obduction project will take what Cyan knows about creating deeply immersive worlds and apply it to an entirely new game with fantastic scenery, incredible architecture, compelling story, and exceptional challenges.

Obduction will be built with the same framework that made Cyan's earlier games such a wonderful experience: stunning landscapes, deep storyline, engaging characters, dramatic soundscapes, and challenging yet intuitive puzzles. Obduction is an entirely new property, delivered using one of the most powerful game development technologies available today. Obduction is an adventure game for the new millennium that stays true to the concepts that made the genre great.

At the base funding level, Obduction will be developed for both Windows and MacOS, with a targeted release of mid-to-late 2015.

The game is being designed with a flexible scope in mind, so that as the budget grows, the game grows. More places; more puzzles; more mystery; more complexity; more adventure!

Happy Gaming!

Re: Announcing Obduction brought to you by Cyan - The Creators of Myst - 10/20/13 06:01 PM

I pledged $25...

I never really played these games before, although I bought them all. Maybe I should give them a go.

They are already at $462,000 after 4 days with 26 days to go. I think it is safe to say they will reach their 1.1 million goal.

Re: Announcing Obduction brought to you by Cyan - The Creators of Myst - 10/23/13 01:52 AM

Ana,
I was flying high when I found out about this new game. Myst was my first computer game and to this day it is still my favorite; I still listen to the music. But when I was reading about this new game, I found a little bit in an article about Obduction that included "...There will certainly be many differences - with some skews into some sequences that have action. smile But the essential experience will be same as Myst & Riven - where you explore, you don't die (easily), and you don't kill things (much)."

I've made my pledge; I'm hoping that they do, indeed, hold true to the original MYST "feeling" because action and I don't do well together.

I love the environments even though I couldn't wrap by brain around the puzzles. lol Uru had action and jumping. I remember being stuck for days. rotfl

Re: Announcing Obduction brought to you by Cyan - The Creators of Myst - 10/23/13 03:08 AM

I started playing Uru two months ago but put it aside. I don't care for the jumping or the movement. It makes me dizzy. I hate to leave a game unfinished but my heart is not into going back to it. Same with American McGee's Alice which I was so excited that I was finally playing after having the game for 10 years.

We'll see. Maybe I'll feel like punishing myself and go back to them.

The thought of Uru is what's making me leery about Obduction. I have it set up to remind me later and I'm keeping my eye on it.

Re: Announcing Obduction brought to you by Cyan - The Creators of Myst - 10/27/13 01:58 PM

Here is their latest gameplay update:

Quote:
Gameplay:
Obduction’s gameplay is best described by playing Myst or Riven. If you haven’t played those games then you’ll need to know a few things. You end up in this new world without a huge cinematic or cut scene that gives you lots of information. We’re not trying to motivate you artificially by making you into someone else. This is you in this place - you have to act and react like you are really here. That will mean you have to scope out your surroundings - move around, look around, turn over a few stones, push a few buttons. Yes, there’ll be buttons… and levers, and cranks, and valves, and pumps, and more. As you explore there will be some places that are locked, or blocked, or walled, or crusted over, or more.
So your play will involve finding out how to get past those “challenges” by learning what they are, and how they work. Sometimes the puzzles can be really simple - like just turning on a light. And other times the puzzles are insidiously tough - like learning how a huge boiler works so you can open it up, climb inside, and crawl through the drain (like in Riven.) But it’s important to us that the puzzles are part of the landscape and culture, so that it doesn’t seem like there’s just a random vault with a random match in it. (Yeah, some of Myst had a bit of arbitrary-ness, but try Riven or Myst Online/Uru and you’ll see how our design evolved and just what we’re talking about.)

oops, I didn't mean to suggest pressure.

I just copied the info, from the kickstarter.
( It said... "Back This Project $1 minimum pledge")
I edited my earlier post.

Good luck to Cyan.
This could be a very good game.

One of their team members
has been working on the upcoming game "The Witness".

Re: Announcing Obduction brought to you by Cyan - The Creators of Myst - 11/10/13 04:38 PM

I'm starting to wonder if they will make it. They need another $200,000 within 5 days. But I suppose with 15,260 backers, the last minute rush might accomplish miracles.

Even then, assuming there is no planned special event and no new backers to expect, every backer would need to pay $13 more to get that $200,000. It won't be easy. I guess they can always have a second campaign in a few weeks or months if it fails.

I've been watching the numbers, too, rmt. There's usually a bump up near the end, but this is quite a "bump" they need.

Re: Announcing Obduction brought to you by Cyan - The Creators of Myst - 11/10/13 04:50 PM

I've got a feeling the backers will make it happen. So close to the goal, I doubt they would let it fail.

Re: Announcing Obduction brought to you by Cyan - The Creators of Myst - 11/14/13 04:50 AM

I was so excited to think of there being finally a new Myst type game being developed-however, I also have issues with timed puzzles AND/OR jumping/leaping, as in Uru and in several places in the later Myst games. Have developed bad arthrits in hands and wrists so don't have the dexterity I once had and those types of actions in games pretty much impossible for me now.
What first drew me to the Myst game was the EXPLORATION and STORY....not running/leaping, or timed (with certainly NOT enough time) puzzles (keep remembering the 'Chair' puzzle in one of the later Myst games-what a nightmare that was-had to have my son do it-and also do the jumping on pressure plates in one of the other games. Since he now lives far away won't have anyone to do those for me. So-Yea ! Glad another in the pipeline, but, also sadness when reading of 'action' puzzles. Absolutely loved the artwork and sound in Riven and Uru but Uru was so difficult with those action area it was never completed....and boy did I try. BUT---WHY--oh WHY-can they not develop a 'SOLVE' option for those areas (jumping-let another route be discovered..say a hidden staircase or elevator, to get us to the next area, and a solve option for timed puzzles) for lots of other people like me who have those problems?????? It would be such a wonderful-not to mention thoughtful thing! I just know there would be many more people wanting to buy and play the game if those things were available. Please developer---Please-read this post and give it some thought. Please??? I know you could do it!

Well you can't blame Cyan for the chair. Myst IV was developed by Ubisoft, not Cyan.

Uru was their doing though.

They really need people like you to beta test any dexterity-dependent puzzles though.
Either that or provide a skip or alternate solution for them.

You could try using the "Contact Me" link on the ***Kickstarter page*** to voice your concern.
