In praise of GOG

Aint they great, back when a lot of the games they are releasing were brand new titles from the original developers we were on old DOS based PC's that we had to configure enough conventional memory for, load drivers in higher memory ETC or buy something like QEMM to try do it for us, a pure pain really ... even though it was a challenge in it self to a techie geek like me.

But some of those old games are absolute classics.

For a while I was still maintaining an old 486 PC with a few MB (yes MB) of ram with DOS 6 to play stuff like Ultima Underworld 1 & 2, System Shock ETC, now GOG have reworked these titles along with Dosbox to transparently work on modern GUI's like Windows 7 with no hassle or overspeed whatsoever ... was an absolute joy to play Ultima Underworld 1 and 2 again recently, even though the graphics are extremely dated a lot of modern games cant hold a candle to those two especially in deep gameplay IMHO.

I agree with you, Karras. I have even downloaded old games from GOG, even though I STILL have "boxed" versions of many of them. I have SO MANY boxed games that I have collected for all these years. I'm a person who doesn't like to throw things away. LOL
Now I only download games, and more games------and more games. Happy Gaming!

I really like GOG, as well. It's so nice to see some of the older good games resurrected such that folks can run them on newer computers without hassles.

Even though I do have my thirteen years old Win98SE machine, which is still running perfectly and on which I can play many of the original releases of my old games (touching wood as I say that ) I am "re-buying" many oldies from GOG (tweaked for play on modern machines) because who knows how much longer my faithful old machine might survive

And as I certainly prefer some of the oldies over some of what gets released these days, I'll do everything I can to make sure I have a working copy of all my favourites
And GOG games being DRM FREE is just a fantastic PLUS because I can burn their games to disk without upsetting any apple carts !!!!

I agree! I have just recently become a member here, and that was the first I had heard of GOG. What a gamesaver! I live in a rural area and had missed out on the whole downloadable games thing due to lack of high speed internet.(Yes, I lived and died on dial-up all these years.)I am in game player heaven again as have not been able to get games on cd or dvd, But agree with Mad in that the old games have something a lot of the newer ones lack.

I feel for you.
I remember being on dialup and (as I've said before), getting hooked on adventure games when I downloaded a demo of Grim Fandango.
As I recall, it was 50 megabytes and took 'all day' to download. And to make matters worse, my connection broke two minutes before the download would have been complete.
(Broke probably isn't the right word but you know what I mean. )
I was so intrigued (and stubborn) that I went for it again and got it this time.
I love Grim still but I sure did hate dialup!

Charles Cecil makes a good argument for digital downloads in this YouTube interview .
I suppose the advantages to a developer like him should be obvious even to those who, like me, love to look at their game boxes.
Recently, with the trouble I've had trying to play games I have on disk, I've become more and more a convert to digital and especially games from GOG which are 'fixed' before you get them in most cases, particularly the old games that wouldn't be playable on a modern computer without GOG's help.
And GOG updates their games when necessary, which is a great thing for a dummy like me.
Not to mention they're DRM free!

I love GOG.
Fingers crossed, they never change their policies or their dedication to gamers.

Btw, if you wonder why I type the way I do, I'm a firm believer in two spaces between sentences to make text readable.
