The Black Mirror 2 - 01/31/14 01:08 AM

I'm finally finishing up "The Black Mirror 2" on my PC Netbook - after playing The Black Mirror and the Black Mirror 3.

Yes, I played 3 first - only because a review I read said it was the best of the three. I disagree, I feel that 2 is the best and I'm going to replay 3 after I finish 2.

So - any Black Mirror fans out there? I've really enjoyed the series and I've got to play all three starting with the first one sometime.

I enjoyed all 3 Black Mirror games. The storyline and puzzles are entertaining.

I love the Black Mirror series too. Haven't played in awhile though. I'll have to dig them up again. Enjoy!

I, too, enjoyed all the Black Mirror games - but I liked the first the most grin

My favourite is still the first. It had an incredible atmosphere and a genuine tension. I didn't enjoy the third game very much; some of the voice acting was atrocious, and the gameplay felt forced.

Re: The Black Mirror 2 - 01/31/14 10:53 PM

I enjoyed all three games as a trilogy, but like Mad and Rushes, I liked the first game the best. I found it the most atmospheric, and I liked that I was able to explore much more of the castle than I was in the two sequels. Also, I thought the story worked best on its own. I actually played the second game first, and while I found it perfectly well made as a game, it didn't really grip me, and I felt I was late to the party in a lot of ways. When I went back to play the first game, everything clicked, and I found I was able to appreciate part two much more overall, and now I consider it a great game. Then, of course, part three followed part two directly, and I played it last, so I can't comment on whether or not it would work on its own for me. smile Not everyone may have this experience, of course, but I felt it worked best for me when I played the games as a trilogy rather than as individual games. Even part one really needs the sequels, unless you don't mind its ending as is. smile

I've found that everyone has their favorite - I liked all three, but 2 is my fave. Amazingly, some actually liked 3 the best.

The bottom line is, like Broken Sword, it is a very solid series and well worth playing.

The graphics are amazing, I can't believe that the game plays flawlessly on a PC Netbook - but it does and is pure eye candy.

After this, I'm playing Broken Sword 2 Remastered on the ipad and what I've heard it is an amazing game too.

Re: The Black Mirror 2 - 02/01/14 01:10 AM

I've played Black Mirror 1/2... They're very differently styled games, but both quite good on their own right. Black Mirror 1 is a modern classic, very atmospheric, with, what I've found, one of the best main protagonist's voices (even though many seem not to like it) and good puzzles. It's not without its flaws, but definitely one of the most influential post-golden period games.

As for Black Mirror 2, I've found it the best adventure (along with The Whispered World) of 2010. Though, I agree there was potential for even more, both in the small coastal town (reminded me of Twin Peaks), and at the castle.

I also enjoyed all three games, but I agree with those who said that 1 is their favourite.

Re: The Black Mirror 2 - 02/01/14 08:19 PM

I loved all three But The 2nd one is by far the best adventure game I've played so far this year. A truly amazing game.

I am now playing Gemini Rue on my iPad mini and so far it is very good,

I will make a point of playing all three Black Mirror games As a series in order very soon.

Hi, Diego. I liked Black Mirror 3 the best but all were fantastic. I have to agree with you about the Whispered World by Daedalic. That is one of my favourite 2 games that I have played. My other favourite game is titled: The Ugly Prince Duckling which won many European awards. It was released in 2007. The game is in fact an autobiography about Hans Christian Andersen, who like the Ugly Duckling, arose from poverty to riches and world acclaim. The music in that game is by far the best of any game I have ever played. The soundtrack is classical music composed by Edvard Greig and the tunes played from the Peer Gynt Suite. The tunes of: hall of the Mountain King, Morning Mood and Solveig's Song are instantly recognizable by almost everybody; music lovers or not. I would suggest anybody reading this blog should try this game, you won't be disappointed.

Callista, I've played only the beginning of The Ugly Prince Duckling, and I agree, I found it quite nice, and I'll definitely give it another go soon. I don't know why there's no more game based on Anderson's work... Also, I think that the company who develope The Ugly Prince Duckling planned on sequels?

diego, there are more in the series but I do not think they are inn English and I think they were geared toward younger kids. You can see them here.

I confess, I love shopping for PC adventure games at half-price books. I got "The Whispered World" for $3.99 and it is on my play real soon list.

It does boot up and run OK and looks great.

Shockingly, I got "Scratches" for a dollar, it looks like a great game too.

Re: The Black Mirror 2 - 02/07/14 06:52 AM

Hi BrownEyedTigre.

Thank you for those leads on Hans Christian Andersen. From what I have made out from them, that there is only one full game on his works, The Ugly prince Duckling. The 4 covers that are shown are all for The Ugly Prince Duckling. I might be wrong, but I believe on is in English, a German version, a Scandinavian version, probably in Norse, and I can't make out the fourth cover.

I would love to see GuppyWorks produce other works by HCA. Don't forget that the Ugly Prince Duckling is an autobiography about Andersen's life and not about any of his stories. Many of the characters in the game are characters from his most famous fairy stories.

The only character I felt sorry for was the duckling who inadvertently thought he was the main attraction and not Hans himself.

I've got to play "The Whispered World" very soon - everyone says it is such a great game. I have it in my waiting to be played pile of games and it really needs to float up to the top.

When I got my PC Netbook, I was amazed by how many games would play on it (98% of all games tried) and how fantastic they looked.

Re: The Black Mirror 2 - 02/08/14 05:33 PM

Ipad_Lover, I loved The Whispered World. thumbsup In fact, I've really enjoyed every Daedalic game I've played, especially Memoria and to a lesser extent, its prequel, The Dark Eye: Chains of Satinav. Edna and Harvey: The Breakout was also one of my favorites of theirs, zany on the surface with dark psychological undertones. Its sequel was very good as well, though not on the level of the first game.

Yea, I've got to play "The Whispered World" soon - I will actually play it right after I finish "Nancy Drew - The Ghost of Thorton Hall" I'm right in the middle of that one and I'm actually enjoying the game quite a bit.

Re: The Black Mirror 2 - 02/12/14 07:26 PM

Partly boosted by this thread, I just began my gazumpteenth replay of Black Mirror 1. laugh It was a bit of a groan to get it working on Windows 7, but I managed it eventually. Many hours of bliss shall ensue. I had almost forgotten just how ominous everyone sounds in this game. lol

The abysmal BM weather is also a current perfect replica of that in Britain, so that's a comfort.

Victoria in the Common room with her coffee pot? I thought it was Col. Mustard in the living room with a candle stick (oops wrong game sorry about that) lol Just couldn't resist.

Anyway on a more serious note, I enjoyed all three games but was partial to BM3 because it brought closure to the series and I thought it was the better of the three. But, one persons junk is another persons treasure.
