Nancy, I started to play by just visiting the Island for now.

The scenery is gorgeous.

I left the game at daylight and came back to check and it was I presume at night fall with some lights in the stairs at the dock.

As an aging "MYSTer" I have a few questions about this announcement. I still have my original copies of MYST, MYST Masterpiece Edition, and RealMYST (As well as all the books, the other five games, the comics, etc.!) Is this new version different from all three of the previous MYST games? Also, if I purchase this new game will I be able to save it to a disk to add to my collection? Thanks in advance for whatever you can tell me.

Re: Real Myst Masterpiece Edition. - 02/12/14 06:14 PM

The Haze, this Masterpiece Edition of Real Myst is not different from the previous one regarding game play, from as much as I played it.

But the scenery: wow.

Take the time to read the text of the link on the first post to notice the improvement.

As for the saving to a disk, you will have to wait for an expert to post a comment on this.

I am so excited about this news. Myst is what got me addicted to adventure games in the first place. I have several versions of it already, including Real Myst, but I'm anxious to download this version to my iMac. I have it on my iPad, but I think it deserves the "Big Screen". And then there's Riven - Wow!

Re: Real Myst Masterpiece Edition. - 02/13/14 01:51 AM

Chief, I looked on Steam and caught a bit of conversation about having to have an older version of QuickTime. Is this true? If so does this impact anything else. Also, I am assuming you can get an older version off the QuickTimes web site.
Thanks.
I need to go to your link.

Re: Real Myst Masterpiece Edition. - 02/13/14 02:14 AM

Nancy, from what I read at my Control Panel about Quick Time, is that I have version 7,6,8 and seems to be up to date. I did not think about QT when installing the game.

And I have Win 7.

The game runs perfectly.

If this is the conversation you're looking at, it's for the old disc version from 14 years ago and has nothing to do with RealMyst Masterpiece --
http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1415363
He's talking about tweaks that helped him run the original disk version of RealMyst on his Windows 7 computer. It looks like he was missing some codecs. I doubt installing QuickTime had any effect on his game unless it supplied a missing codec. The fact that he used a NoCD (the RealMystFixedEXEs.zip file) may have also helped.

The Steam version of RealMyst mentioned in that thread is not the Masterpiece version, which did not exist in 2010 when that thread was started.

Even the original PC version of Real Myst does not require QuickTime.
In fact my old Real Myst box specifically states:
"QuickTime is not necessary."

The only Myst games for PC that needed QuickTime were the original Myst, Myst Masterpiece, and Riven.

QuickTime was an optional install included with Myst III in case you needed a movie viewer to watch the "Making of" movie. Some people thought it was used in the game because it was included with it. But it wasn't used in the game itself. I played the PC version of Myst III without any version of QuickTime installed on the computer. The PC version of Myst IV did not use QuickTime either.

The Mac versions of Myst III and IV did use QuickTime, and it's possible QuickTime was used for the small filmed sequences of the brothers and Atrus that were inserted in the Mac version of RealMyst. But I assume you're using a PC and not a Mac.

It's currently $17.99 for either the Steam or Mac versions.
The option for pseudo-point-and-click may be less motion-sickness-inducing than the keyboard control. But I don't do Steam so would wait for a DRM-free version anyway.

I'm going to download it tonight from the Apps store. I only have DSL for my internet connection and I know it will take hours.(It's 1.59 GB) So after I finish playing with all my other electronic devices for the evening, I'll go upstairs and let my iMac run all night if necessary.

Re: Real Myst Masterpiece Edition. - 02/15/14 07:08 PM

Kaki's Sister,
I don't know what video card is in your iMac.
All the current 27-inch iMacs have Nvidia video cards that meet the system requirements. However one of the 21.5-inch models has "Intel Iris Pro" graphics that probably do not meet the game's requirements.

You should be able to find out what your video card is by clicking the Apple logo in the upper left of your screen, then "About this Mac," then "More info...," then check the Graphics listing in the Hardware section. Or if the Mac is running OS X "Lion" (10.7) or later, you may have to click the "System Report" button after clicking "More Info..."

I'm a little concerned about buying the game for my 5+ year old iMac.
Although my iMac's video card meets the specs, I am concerned about the cooling.
I bought ***this 3D Mahjong game*** and it made my iMac's fans roar so loudly it was hard to believe. They never made such a racket before. I checked internal temperature with iStat and the video card was over 90°C! I never ran that game again. It's not worth risking a video card burnout in an iMac, where you can't replace the video card easily. So I'm a little leery about running any 3D app on this iMac that might stress the video card. It's possible that Mahjong game was just badly made, or has a problem with my particular video card, but who knows. Unfortunately there is no demo for the Mac version of the game that I can find, so I can't see if it would have the same problem.

You say your iMac is new, so it may not have the same problems as mine does.
But anyone with an older iMac may want to be careful -- wait for some reviews or a demo.

Jenny100 these are my specs.
iMac with a 21.5 inch screen, OSX 10.9, 2.7 GHz, Intel Core i5, 8GB, 1600MHZ, DDR3 and a NVGeForce GT640M,512 MB.
Do you think this will work okay with the game?
Posted By: Jenny100

Re: Real Myst Masterpiece Edition. - 02/15/14 11:11 PM

It meets the stated minimum specs, and its video card is faster than the one in my iMac, however I can't guess how well it will actually work with the game. You might check the RealMyst Masterpiece forums at Cyan to see if any Mac users with your specs are playing it.

Re: Real Myst Masterpiece Edition. - 02/16/14 12:17 AM

I downloaded the game last night; took approximately 4 1/2 hours with DSL. I started at 8:15 and 3 hours later 1 GB had downloaded. I'm assuming it finished about 1 1/2 later while I was asleep. It was all installed when I got up this morning and I've been playing it on and of all day. My iMac is about a year old and a half old, and its running OS Maverick.

I started in the Free Roam version, but it was too much motion for me, so I switched to the Classic Myst point & click and there's still plenty of movement, but more controlled. I slowed the mouse movement down to the slowest setting and it working really well.

I know $17.99 seems expensive, but when I think of all the boxed games I've purchased for %20.00 or more, it seemed like a bargain. With the Apple Apps store, even if I delete it after I'm done, I can always download it again for free.

Re: Real Myst Masterpiece Edition. - 02/18/14 11:57 PM

Kaki's Sister,

I don't think you'll have any problems with it. I've finished the Selenic Age (the Rocket Ship) and the Mechanical Age with no glitches. I did slow the mouse down to the slowest setting, and discovered there is a flashlight to use in dark areas. These are accessed in the Options Menu. I love the way the sky changes from day to night, where you can see the moon and stars, and the sky lightens up as the dawn begins to break. I've played various versions of Myst about a dozen times, but I think this is the best so far. I just hope Riven won't be too far behind.

Re: Real Myst Masterpiece Edition. - 02/19/14 03:59 PM

I prefer Myst Masterpiece.
The graphics actually have more detail than the original RealMyst, though not the RealMyst Masterpiece. However RealMyst has enhancements like weather effects.
Motion sickness spoils the RealMyst games for me.
I wish they'd remake Myst again, with high resolution graphics and weather effects, but without the screen movement.

Re: Real Myst Masterpiece Edition. - 02/20/14 05:08 AM

real myst gives more roaming movement on the island , where masterpiece you can only travel in a set path. I had the disk version of masterpiece but then purchased real myst from gog

here is a better explanation from a post back in 2006

Myst
-----
The game was originally released in 1993 (on CD's) and is therefore somewhat primitive by today's standards. It uses a "point/click/go there" navigation system, in which you interact with the game through a series of static, pre-rendered images (although you can look around within an image) to solve puzzles and advance in the game. The "point/click/go there" navigation system means that it's not a real-time graphics game like Myst V, in that you move from place to place on a zap-to-a-new-location basis instead of walking to the new location in real time.

realMyst
--------
It's essentially the same game - the puzzles are the same and the Linking Books are the same, and it's still on CD's - but there's an additional Age called Rime. The primary attraction of this release is a new 3D engine, with real-time graphics, freedom of movement, and relatively dynamic environments, much like Myst V. The benefits of the new engine are limited to the visuals, however, and the downside is that on some PC's, the engine runs slowly and causes the game to drag.

Myst Masterpiece Edition
------------------------
This release is a remastering of the original game, with 24-bit color graphics, 16-bit sound, and full compatibility with Windows XP. The music has been digitally remastered and new sound effects added. Color is much better than the original, and the movies and animations are larger and higher-quality. A DigitalGuide in-game help system has been added, with the level of help ranging from broad hints to specific solutions. Also included is Myst: The Book of Atrus, a prequel written by Myst designers Rand and Robyn Miller, which explains the background underlying the Myst world. The original "point/click/go there" navigation is still used, however. Myst Masterpiece Edition is part of the Myst 10th Anniversary DVD Edition, which also contains Riven: Sequel to Myst and Myst III: Exile.

IMHO, your best value is the Myst 10th Anniversary DVD Edition, since you also get Riven and Exile. But if you want real-time animation and don't want "point/click/go there" navigation, your only choice is realMyst. It's currently available on eBay, Amazon, et al.

BTW, I wasn't trying to compare MYST MASTERPIECE EDITION TO to REALMYST MASTERPIECE EDITION, I was trying to compare REALMYST MASTERPIECE EDITION to REALMYST. The Myst Masterpiece Edition was very much the same as the original MYST(It travels in a straight path). HAPPY GAMING!

Re: Real Myst Masterpiece Edition. - 02/22/14 12:47 PM

I have another question about this new real Myst Masterpiece Edition. The recommend specs for the video card are "1Gb SM 4.0 compliant video card". What does that mean?
My iMac has a NVIDIA GeForce GT 640M with 512MB. How does it compare with 1GB SM 4.0 compliant video card? Will it be good enough for the game? Thanks.
Posted By: Jenny100

Re: Real Myst Masterpiece Edition. - 02/22/14 02:34 PM

http://www.gameboomers.com/forum/ubbthre...lat/fpart/4/q/1
SM 4.0 means Shader Model 4.0 (same as "pixel shader")
The Nvidia Geforce GT 640M is compliant up to Shader 5.0 according to
http://www.notebookcheck.net/NVIDIA-GeForce-GT-640M.71579.0.html
So you meet that requirement.

The 1GB means it recommends 1GB of RAM, which is twice 512MB.
So you have half the recommended specs for video RAM.
You only meet the minimum requirements for video RAM.

I'd recommend waiting for a demo so you can see how well it plays on your Mac.
It won't be much fun if you have to turn off the visual effects to keep it from chugging.

Re: Real Myst Masterpiece Edition. - 02/22/14 04:57 PM

The Real Myst Masterpiece edition from Steam does have a couple of bugs. At one point I was completely stuck underground, I had to change to the free roam mode to get out! also before going to Rime Age I decided to have another go in the maze. When I got to the end I fell out of the game!! the exit door just decided to travel miles above me, again I had to change to the free roam mode and quickly run through the door. Weird graphics glitch... eek I completed the game in about 4 hours-strange how after 20 years the game still resides somewhere in the brain.

Re: Real Myst Masterpiece Edition. - 02/22/14 11:08 PM

I remember playing the original RealMyst and somehow getting waist-deep in the ground in the Selenitic Age. I had to click on the door controls to get the close-up and then exit back out of the close-up to get back to the normal level. So falling through the ground isn't limited to the new edition.

True. The original was sometimes buggy as well. Usually 'trying anything' would get you back out of the problem, but sometimes it messed up even more or crashed entirely. [What's behind the scenes? Why, nothing's behind the scenes..except the player..falling endlessly crazy lol ]

Actually, I have the original BOXED version of REALMYST, so I would NOT qualify for the discount from STEAM or from GOG in any case. I still have NOT decided to purchase the STEAM version because I've played REALMYST so many times already. I really don't know how the graphics could be any better than those in my boxed version, so I'll wait.

Just thought I'd let you all know that the Apple Store is showing an updated version of RealMyst Masterpiece Edition. Apparently they have fixed the bugs in the first release including the "black" screen issue.
