Looking for a recent scary adventure game

Looking for a recent scary adventure game - 06/03/14 04:38 PM

I haven't purchased a "real" adventure game in awhile. Have been mostly using BF and am a little tired of amulets, HOS, witches, gremlins, little friends, etc.

Was wondering if anyone could recommend a good game that's somewhat dark (not bloody),but keeps you on the edge of your seat.

Thanks for any suggestions.

Re: Looking for a recent scary adventure game - 06/03/14 05:04 PM

Depending on your definition of "bloody," you might try "The Last Door."
Because the resolution is so low, "bloody" things are just sprinkled with red squares.

However the low resolution does bother some peoples' eyes, so I suggest trying a demo to see how you like it.

The story is good, Lovecraft-inspired, doesn't depend on gore, though there are the red squares sometimes.

You can check out one of the four Episodes here
http://thelastdoor.com/index.php/menu
You do have to create an account and be logged in to play.

The Collector's edition contains all four episodes and you don't need to be online to play. I suggest trying it out first.

You might also try the latest Blackwell game -- Blackwell Epiphany, though I'd recommend playing the earlier episodes if you haven't already.

And it's 3 years old, but if you haven't played it, Last Half of Darkness: Society of the Serpent Moon.

Thank you, Jenny. I have played Last Half of Darkness (right on target about what I like!).

Laurette,

Have you played LHoD: Tomb of Zojir, too?
I really enjoyed that one; it preceded Serpent Moon.

Then there's a considerably older pair that equal one game, Dracula: Resurrection and Dracula 2: The Last Sanctuary.
I'm replaying them now...just started Sanctuary.
They're the best of the Dracula series, IMO, and there's no blood as far as I recall though the villains are really villainous (Dorko and her sisters are downright scary) and the graphics are still wonderful.
The dungeon in Sanctuary is gruesome but so beautifully done I've always loved just wandering around in there.
Did I mention some of the puzzles in this one will really give your brain a workout?
Well, they did mine. grin

Oh! I almost forgot to mention that they come in the GOG Dracula trilogy - and bless GOG's little bear heart - the problem with the stuttering voices in the beginning of Resurrection that practically ruined the disk version is GONE!!

Yeehee!

Thanks, Gil. I have played all of those. I'm beginning to wonder if there are any new or newer games like you mentioned. I like to be scared!

Re: Looking for a recent scary adventure game - 06/04/14 04:55 PM

Other than Blackwell Epiphany and The Last Door, I can't think of any really recent ones. If you don't usually play Nancy Drew gamess, Ghost of Thornton Hall is much more of a ghost story than other Nancy Drews and might be worth a look.

There are some 3D games like Dear Esther and Montague's Mount.
http://www.gog.com/game/montagues_mount

Ether One is about exploring inside someone's decaying mind, and I thought it was spooky. One GOG user review compared it to Amber: Journeys Beyond.
http://www.gog.com/game/ether_one

However I have problems playing the 3D games due to ever-increasing susceptibility to motion sickness, and have not finished any of them. They are mostly about exploring around and uncovering the story as you go (less about solving puzzles). I don't know if you encounter gore later in the games.

I don't know if another Last Half of Darkness game is in development. However there is a contact email on their website and a link to get on their mailing list.

We still have the next installment of The Lost Crown series to look forward to, but it probably won't be ready any time soon.

There is not another LHOD game in the works. His next game will be of a different genre. Hopefully one day Bill will go back to the series we love.

Nancy Drew: The Ghost of Thorton Hall (Nancy Drew 28) might be what you are looking for - no blood, but had it's creepy moments.

Re: Looking for a recent scary adventure game - 06/05/14 02:55 PM

Ana: I looked into that, but a reviewer said it's a very short game, which I don't like. Thank you, though.

ipad_Lover: I used to love Nancy Drew games, but after awhile, they got tedious and felt more like work than fun.

P.S. I am NOT fussy! (:

Lol! Me neither, too.
I seem to be replaying more games these days because so many newer ones just don't offer what I want of them and the ones that do get me excited come with other drawbacks like being priced out of my reach.
Just as well.
By the time they're old (two years from now grin) and affordable, I'll know if they were worth getting excited about anyway.

I wish I could think of something for you, Laurette!

Re: Looking for a recent scary adventure game - 06/05/14 03:30 PM

I can't think of any other games to suggest, Laurette. I would say that even though you are tired of Nancy Drew games, if you had a free code to use at Big Fish, you could pick up Ghost of Thornton Hall on Big Fish now. You wouldn't really be risking anything if you didn't like it. There are no chores in the game. My biggest criticism of the game is that it is quite dark and I found myself having to adjust brightness/gamma settings.

I have been looking at Among the Sleep on Steam. You play a 2 year old toddler-looks pretty scarey to me. Reviews look good too and they have 10% off.scared

Edit: sorry just seen previous posts. Think I'll get it though.

Many recent Nancy Drew games are indeed tedious and more work than fun.

The Ghost of Thornton Hall is a true horror adventure game that was quite creepy and dark. A true classic.

It got rav reviews too.

I would also recommend "Gray Matter" too.

Re: Looking for a recent scary adventure game - 06/06/14 11:17 PM

ipad_Lover: I played Gray Matter quite awhile ago. Good game. Re: ND games, I used 2 free game credits for their games - one about arson and the Deadly Device. The first one drove me crazy, jumping from one detective to another, not being able to do something until one of the others did something. The Deadly Device was changing the time from day to night trying to investigate. As I said, used to love ND games, not any more. Also saw several reviewers on Thornton Hall and they mentioned some puzzles they couldn't solve, with no way to skip or anything. I am sad that I don't like ND games any more, but that's just me.

Re: Looking for a recent scary adventure game - 06/07/14 05:26 PM

Thornton Hall is different from other Nancy Drew games -- much more of a ghost story. I wouldn't compare it with Deadly Device or with any of the other recent Nancy Drews games. Any puzzles you aren't able to solve are easy to get past with a walkthrough (unlike timed/arcade sequences) so the lack of an official "skip" doesn't matter much. MaG's walkthrough will get you past any puzzle problems.
http://www.gameboomers.com/wtcheats/pcNn/ND28/ND28.htm

It's your choice. But since you are hard up for games, Thornton Hall is worth considering even though it has the Nancy Drew "label." One caveat is if you don't have a bright monitor. Most of the screens are quite dark.

Another game you might check out is Oknytt. The graphics are dark because the game takes place at night, and the game is full of nighttime creatures from Swedish folklore. Some are scary, some not. There are gamma settings in case you absolutely can't see anything, but IMO you still need a reasonably bright monitor and may need to play at night. Oknytt is sold at ***Shinyloot*** (currently $4.99)

Thanks again, Jenny. I used the link you gave for Oknytt and got the Adventure Shop site. Searched for this game and came up with no results.

I'm sorry for the confusion, Laurette.
I must have had the wrong link in my clipboard.

I f you play the game in junior mode this won't happen and if you get stuck, there are numerous walkthroughs.

Ghost of Thorton hall does not play like the Nancy Drew games you listed at all, it plays like a modern horror adventure.

It is excellent as such and well worth playing by anyone who likes scary games.

Hi Laurette,

please check what Desura.com (Australia) has to offer.

Here is a list of their horror adventures: Click here

There are also many free Indie games among them, so why not give them a try? Many could be worth a try.

Thanks, all.

Re: Looking for a recent scary adventure game - 06/09/14 12:41 AM

Laurette,

I played and liked The Cat Lady, but I was able to relate to her. Some people here started the game and did not finish it, probably finding it too depressing.

Thank you oldbroad.

P.S. Noticed you're from Chicago. Me too! Great city, no matter what anybody says!

Re: Looking for a recent scary adventure game - 06/09/14 02:13 AM

You're welcome Laurette. Do you think you'll try the game out? I'd be interested in your opinion of it if you do.

Yep, Chicago born and raised. It's a pretty good city but sometimes does seem scary, but I'm pretty sure other cities do too.

Re: Looking for a recent scary adventure game - 06/09/14 02:40 AM

You know, oldbroad, I've liked everyone I've ever met from Chicago, which has led me to think I never want to visit.
I have this theory that all the great people have left Chicago for other parts, tired of walking backward against the wind in the winter, I guess.
What are you still doing there? grin

Chicago is an awesome city. Born and raised there and I am still in awe of it. I will never tire of Lincoln Park and the lakefront.

Re: Looking for a recent scary adventure game - 06/09/14 03:02 AM

I liked Chicago; in the sixties, my grandparents lived in Oak Park and we would visit them. My father grew up there. smile

Re: Looking for a recent scary adventure game - 06/09/14 03:46 AM

Well, nobody said I was great so...

I don't mind the winters too much though it is true that I don't like strong wind and I don't like the ice we had all last winter. I definitely prefer winter to summer though.

Marian, I'm just a bit north of Oak Park. Beautiful homes there.

Re: Looking for a recent scary adventure game - 06/09/14 06:53 AM

Hi Laurette,

yes, many of them look and sound (almost too?) scary.

I have played on few of those games:

- Alter Ego
- Anna
- Baron Wittard: Nemesis of Ragnarok
- Dark Fall: Lost Souls
- Darkness Within: In Pursuit of Loath Nolder
- Darkness Within 2: The Dark Lineage
- Eleusis
- Last Half of Darkness: Society of the Serpent Moon
- Reperfection - Volume 1

You have probably played them 'all'?

The only one I have downloaded from Desura is Reperfection (Click). I liked the story which is about trying to change the future by changing the past, not an easy task. It's not very scary, not long either, maybe 3-5 hours. But I liked it anyway, the story is quite unique. It's not so expensive, I took it as my share of supporting Indie developers. That game was not a bad launchpad to next level, I believe.

Re: Looking for a recent scary adventure game - 06/09/14 04:49 PM

Oldbroad: Yes, I do think I'll try The Cat Lady. When I do, I'll let you know.

Timo: I haven't played:Baron Wittard; Anna; Eleosis or Reperfection. The others I have. Thanks for the suggestions.

Traveler: I "used" to live in Chicago; and you definitely should visit (in the summer!). It's a beautiful city, with wonderful restaurants and museums.

oldbroad: I feel like I'm insulting you when I type that (kidding). I looked at the trailer for The Cat Lady and feel it's not for me, unfortunately. Games, movies, etc. about suicide upset me. Probably my loss re this game. But, thank you for the recommendation.

Re: Looking for a recent scary adventure game - 06/11/14 04:46 PM

Laurette,

To echo the suggestions of some others, the Dark Fall games are consistently excellent. You really can't go wrong with any of them, though the third (Lost Souls) is somewhat "bloody" and more macabre than the other two. Barrow Hill was quite enjoyable, and though it still doesn't get a lot of ink, I really liked Baron Wittard. It has a huge space and lots of nifty artifacts to explore, a good story, challenging puzzles, and nice graphics and ambient music/sounds that add to the sense of decay and dread as you explore. Of course there is Scratches as well, which is usually high on everyone's list for good reason.

Re: Looking for a recent scary adventure game - 06/11/14 05:05 PM

I enjoyed Baron Wittard too. I remember a LOT of note-taking with this one -- as books and documents didn't remain in inventory. It had a good, eerie atmosphere.
