Quest for Infamy -- review by flotsam - 07/31/14 05:11 PM

An "old school style" questing RPG
similar to the old Quest for Glory games

Play as brigand, sorceror, or rogue
The game chooses which, based on your actions

But beware of the buxom wenches
the puerile humor
and the fussy screen exits

Still, you may find the sum of the parts
is better than the parts themselves

Find out more about the game in

Well, I heard c*** so many times I was grinding my teeth until I thought of turning off the sound (and consequently the repetitive comment from the narrator) during sections where I used spells over and over as a Sorcerer - and there was a good bit of juvenile/scatological humor.
Get beyond that, though, and it's an enjoyable game.

Frankly, the buxom wenches didn't bother me at all and not only did I think all of the character portraits were very well done, I liked the voice acting quite a lot.
(Btw, if you watch the credits as the game insists you do, you'll notice quite a number of familiar names, some as 'voice actors', among them Augustin Cordes.)

The world itself is very large and beautifully done, in my opinion an improvement on the worlds of the games it emulates.

The fights...meh.
They weren't really hard and shouldn't give anyone much trouble.
Playing as a Sorcerer, I probably had an edge since I had a spell I could use during a fight that upped my resistance (I think it was Inner Fear) and I had paid attention to the Adventurer at the Volksville Inn who more or less tells you how to fight the various enemies you encounter.

I used the walkthrough in several spots...I hate mazes...and here's a warning.
It really isn't much good, though it will give you an idea of what you have to do next if you're staring at the screen and wondering.

The map of the mine (in game and in the walkthrough) frankly sucks and good luck if you expect it to lead you straight to where you want to go.

I think the feeling that the game lacked much direction came from making it possible to play as three different types: rogue, sorcerer and brigand.
The game would have been tighter if there were just one character type to play, IMO, and just wanting to get out of the valley isn't really much of a goal for a hero or an anti-hero; despite his mouth, Roehm is much more of the former.

All in all, I'm glad I backed it.
I enjoyed Quest for Infamy.
And at the end, after all the credits and thank you's, there is a teaser for a possible new game!
Steven Alexander is learning from all the comments on QFI, I think; even Rock, Paper, Shotgun was pretty lenient and gave good advice on where he went right and where he went wrong.
If he's working on a new game, as it seems he is, more power to him.
I'm ready for it.

Gil.

Good to hear your thoughts about the game, Gil. How long would you estimate that it took you to play?

I'm not really sure, Marian.
I'd estimate a week, putting together all the broken bits of time.
Believe me, I'd still be playing and stuck in one of those mazes if the walkthrough hadn't gotten them right!

More thoughts, since I just looked again at flotsam's review where he says: "Once I worked out that I could substitute keys to choose my action icons (walk, run, sneak, look, talk etc) rather than having to constantly click the menu bar I was more comfortable, and even more so with the music turned off. More tweaks got rid of the subtitles, and my excursions outside the gaming window got less and less as I approached the edges with far less vigour. Getting a map helped too, as there was no longer the necessity to wander through screen after screen."

If you have a mouse with a middle wheel, you don't need to click on the menu bar to get look, talk, etc.
For run, walk, sneak, yes, you do have to use the icons on the menu bar or keys, but as a Sorcerer I used them so seldom that it didn't bother me.
What I really don't get, though, is the complaint about clicking "outside the smallish game window".
Smallish?
Outside?
The game plays fullscreen for me.
As for difficulty finding an exit on occasion, heaven knows I had that problem lots of times in the old King's Quest games!
Roehm did refuse to walk through an exit now and again until I moved him in the wrong direction a bit grin but I had very little trouble with getting from one room to another.

She who reads subtitles,

Gil.
