What would YOU like in my game?

What would YOU like in my game? - 08/01/14 06:05 PM

I'm working on my own game, and it will be a lot like the Carol Reed ones,
since I like them alot and is totally inspired by playing them all.
It will take me a while though since I'm doing it myself and I have some
issues with bodily pains. I love doing it however, and will do my best to complete it!

Now to my question. I can promise you that I will never compromise myself,
or hold back if I really want something, that's not who I am.
I am however, interested in what you all would change, or add or whatever
to an adventure-game. (in this case, first person Point-n-click)

It can be about anything really, and the only reason I'm asking you this,
is because this is a really nice Community, and I'm not scared of you.
Maybe I should, but I'm not. kissy

If I've forgotten anything, I'm sure you'll tell me. wink

The most important aspects of an Adventure game for me are that it should have a very good story and no timed action sequences.

I can live with most other things wink

I agree, I want it to be a really good story, or at least a story that I like. smile
Stress is nothing I like very much, however, there is always that possibility
to make it SEEM timed/stressful, if you get me? wink

EDIT: Haha, tried to make use of the buttons above, no luck, hehe

Another important feature is the puzzles. Some of the puzzles are random and I get stuck on them seems like forever. There should be a easy way out if you want to use it. That option should be in the game. There are games that I played and couldn't solve the puzzle so I just quit playing. That's just me. Lots of luck with any game you make RebKean.

I agree with this as well, iag i get too stuck in a game I might give up!
It's good to get some level of challenge, but if it's to hard, I just get annoyed. wink
So that is indeed a fine line to walk, 'cause you want to satisfy as many as possible.
I have qouit some games myself beacuse it realle sucks the fun out of it,
it it's too hard. Or maybe we're too dumb, haha?

EDIT: Forgot to say thanks.....

It's easy enough to offer a puzzle skip.
Just don't make it easy to click by accident.

If it's going to be a slide show type game then you can count me out right away. I like to feel like I'm moving In a game and I want panning in my games. Some people prefer the slide show format but not me. The slide show thing is what turned me off the Carol Reed games.

If I understand you correctly, you like it as it is in the
early Carol Reed games then, where there is an skip but it's
pretty hard to find if you don't know what you're looking for?

Sorry to see you gone already. I do understand what you mean (I Think),
and the reason is of course that it's too difficult at this time.
I have never felt this though, in the CR-games, I feel pretty free.
Maybe we'll meet in the future, never give up. wink
I should Point out that I appreciate all thoughts,
although if your ideas correspond (Spelling?) with mine,
you are of course a better person. grin

No I mean don't put a puzzle skip button right near the puzzle where someone could click it by accident while trying to solve the puzzle.

What nest is that? Don't understand what you mean.....
I love to talk about things, and I can take criticism if anyone has it.
Honesty is like a religion to me and so on, but I can't see any nest....

Geez, don't kid about such serious things! I was really worried there for a while. smile
(no good sigh-smiley here is there?)

Man, you really got me. Well, now I can Breathe again. wink

Re: What would YOU like in my game? - 08/02/14 10:42 AM

I thought there would be full of notes in this my morning. lol
But ok, it was friday and so on, or maybe....ah never mind.

I found something else to do, getting other smilies!
This was the first one I found, I'm sure there's a lot of others out there
http://www.planetsmilies.com/

I realise now that maybe there isn't all that much to say about
a game that I haven't even got a name for yet.

I did get some topic in didn't I? It would be fun to have some of this in the game:
Or this:
But it will probably be mostly like this: Or this: Well I will stop
now before I lose it completely, hehe.

And now it seems I can't even put more smilies in, hahaha.
And no, i'm not on drugs just a Little high on Life! =)
(it drives crazy when some of the letters turn into capital ones, arrgg)

I love assembling photos or whatever and contrary to many other gamers, well-made slider puzzles really satisfy me. I've just gotten to the slider puzzle in Still Life and I'm taking my time with it. I'm also looking forward to doing the laser puzzle in this game, too. Plenty of drawers and rooms to go through.

Re: What would YOU like in my game? - 08/02/14 10:24 PM

Interesting. I didn't really know what people thought about slider-puzzles.
For me, it depends on the energy-level of my brain, haha.
I assume it's "easier" to make than some other puzzles, but there is still
differences to be found, in the quality of the pictures and other things.

What's the laser-puzzle all about? Should I have heard about it perhaps? =)

LOL... I hate sliders :-)

Re: What would YOU like in my game? - 08/04/14 07:21 PM

The graphics are important to me, and I do not like retro blocky style graphis anymore (except in old games that had them to begin with) but as long as not blocky /pixelated or poor quality can be either slide or moving / freeroaming 3d so they can be like Carol Reeds style as hers are beautiful.

Re the game the story is very important, much more than the puzzles, and re the puzzles they must fit with the story. There should be a skip button and maybe a hint control system as well.

I need a demo to be released before I will commit to buy so I know it plays /looks ok

I wish you luck!

Re: What would YOU like in my game? - 08/04/14 08:03 PM

The hint-system in the Carol Reed games are very good, and that would be great to have of course.
Since it is my first try, it might be a bit simpler than that though. wink
But it something to aim for, for sure.

I want the story to be a good one, and puzzles to fit as well as possible.
I Think in this type of game, the story is the most important ingredient,
so I'm trying to get it right. sherlock

RebKean,
Just one thing - if you're thinking about adding a maze, DON'T.
Was that emphatic enough? grin

Much luck to you!
I hope you have lots of fun making your game and it's everything you hope for.

Btw, have you thought about joining the AGS forum and talking your ideas over with people who've "been there, done that"?
They seem like a pretty nice bunch, too.

Gil.

Haha, yes that was very empathic. lol
Have you watched too much of The Shining? evil

Thanks, and a hope it stays fun!

I looked at their software (asg), but decided (so far) on Wintermute instead.
You mean I should infiltrate their forum? cool
Just kidding. There seems to be alot of people in that forum, so maybe I should check it out?
Thanks for the tip!

Yes, I do mean you should infiltrate their forum. thumbsup
Look around there and you'll see that the maker of the recent game Samaritan Paradox (his first game) is a member.
Dave Gilbert of Wadjet Eye games got his start with AGS and the (then free game) The Shivah and may still be a member.
And Francisco Gonzalez may still be around.
He's the maker of the popular, free Ben Jordan games (8 of those at my last count) whose first pay-for-it-dude game, A Golden Wake, is coming out soon.
Here's his Grundislav Games website where you can download the freebies if you want to and see his progression over the years.
He uses AGS for the Ben Jordan games...not sure about Golden Wake...but looking at these may be of some help to you whatever engine you use.

I just looked at the "license" Francisco Gonzalez includes with his free games and had to laugh.

"If you paid for this game:

You should demand your money back, cause you got ripped off, my friend.
This game is FREEWARE and as such, should not be sold, because God knows I ain't getting any money for it. If you did pay for this game, please contact me at grundislav@hotmail.com and tell me who sold it to you.

That way I can kill them."

grin

Thanks for all the info!
I will check it out, and you also gave me names so it will be a lot easier for me now!

The "license" is great, eccept if anyone actually would die,
the it's a bad thing to have it on print! grin

Re: What would YOU like in my game? - 08/05/14 06:19 PM

Well, RebKean, I realize the kind of games those guys make...mostly with AGS graphics...is probably not the type you're most interested in since you mentioned really liking Carol Reed, but the forum members still might be a bit of help to you.
It might also help if you look at what they say in the forum on unfinished games/games in progress.
Frankly, it's all Greek to me but maybe not to you!

You might even consider getting in touch with Mikael who makes the Carol Reed games and is a member here at GB.

Anyhow, good luck!

Re: What would YOU like in my game? - 08/05/14 07:53 PM

It is possible to use ags for the type of game i will make, i found one there a while ago,
The Oracle or something like that. And I get what you mean, you never know where help will come from. wink

And the reason for trying out Wintermute is because I already am in contakt with Mikael.
So I have great assistance there. smile

Thanks alot!

Re: What would YOU like in my game? - 08/05/14 08:19 PM

I played The Oracle years ago!
Yes, that was based on photos, now I think of it, though I can't remember what country it was in or if that was even mentioned.
I see The Oracle is still available for download if anyone's interested.
Got quite a good rating, too.

Canada and Portugal is what the info says.
Yes I tried it recently, didn't play long though,
more interested in my own one, hehe.
But at least it shows that you can make that type of game with AGS.

Re: What would YOU like in my game? - 08/08/14 02:01 AM

Good voice acting always makes a game much better, when voices are monotone with no emotion or acting like someone reading badly from a script, it makes the game a lot more boring and less fun to play!

Re: What would YOU like in my game? - 08/08/14 12:53 PM

Haha, yeah the voice-acting will be interesting. blush
I'm alone, perhaps I can get my man to help out,
at least he won't be photographed! (shy one)
But I will certainly do my very best,
I can promise you that! thumbsup
I do have an advantage, since I'm alone I can
work with the voice at any time and try out
different ways of speaking without being
embarrast all the time in front of other people.

It will get better when I make the next game(hybris...),
and I have something to show to people. grin
