How many backgrounds does adventure game have? - 09/13/14 07:04 PM

Hello, im just curious to how many backgrounds does an average adventure game have?

I have read about 30 for resonance adventure game
And also around 30 for COGNITION: AN ERICA REED THRILLER per episode.
Also around 30 for Blackwell series... Can somebody tell me if this is right, that the episodic adventure games have around 30 main scenes/backgrounds per episode?

Im just curious :-).

welcome to GameBoomers, mikcik.

I don't have an answer to your question, but maybe someone else will have an idea.

I'm not sure what you mean by backgrounds. Maybe that's beacause I haven't played those games. =)

EDIT: The easiset way is probaby to play and count.

I mean the number of main scenes, main "rooms" where the game takes place.

Maybe one or more developers that visit the forum might give you an idea.
I would presume that it depends on the storyline. I have played adventures that are 5 to maybe ~50 or so.

And then there are the (generally free) escape-the-room games that have only one room. Maybe two. grin
Of course, as RebKean said, you could count but I don't know how you'd manage that if, like me, you would get too interested in the games and forget to count the rooms.

I'm not even sure what counts as a "scene."
Especially in a 3D game, where you don't have discrete backgrounds and the "scene" could be exceedingly large and extend through the whole chapter.

I occasionally notice when a game has a limited number of locations (I find that a easier concept than 'backgrounds' or 'scenes'). Some games use locations that have a wider span that a single screen can show, so they pan across left and right, or sometimes up and down.

My gut feeling would be that a game that had 10-20 locations as a fairly small game, but then again, it would really depend upon the complexity of those locations because some story-tellers can do a lot with a handful of locations, where others need dozens of locations with not much content in each.

There is no exact definition as to what a "background" really is. I'd say that when you move from one screen to another, you have seen two backgrounds. I prefer to use the term "scene" for each new screen. The number of scenes are usually much higher in first person games than in third person games. You have to have a wider perspective in third person games, since it must be plenty of room for the character to move around in. Hence, the scenes in these games usually contain more details and objects to interact with. And, as have been pointed out previously in this thread, you can sometimes pan across the scene, which obviously makes it even larger.

I would also count a close up of an object or small location in a larger scene as a separate scene, while some may not.

Locations on the map, or places you can "travel to" is something different, in my opinion. There are games with plenty map locations, but few scenes, and games with lots of scenes contained in a small amount of map locations.

For some absurd reason, I used to count the number of scenes in the first adventure games I played, all of them from Sierra. I think that Leisure Suit Larry had about 80, while the King's Quest games had between 120 and 300. I'd guess that the average number of scenes for a commercial adventure game today is 80-100. But one has to keep in mind that the graphics are more detailed nowadays than in the early Sierra games.

3D games like Dreamfall is a totally different cup of tea. Since you move around seamlessly between rooms and locations, there is no actual method of establishing the number of scenes.

Thanks guys ans girls for all the tips, especially those from Mikael were helpfull :-).
I also think that a major new full (not episodic) adventure contains around those circa 80-100 backgrounds/scenes.
