Joseph Vargo describes the origins of Doctor Arcana —

The Cabinets of Doctor Arcana is a throwback to the early computer puzzle games like The 7th Guest, Shivers and Jewels of the Oracle. I was very influenced by these types of games and used them as inspiration throughout this project. Puzzle games seem to have become a thing of the past, and that's really unfortunate because they're very fun and challenging. I felt compelled to resurrect this classic genre, so we embraced the idea of creating an old-style puzzle game and ran with it. We specifically designed The Cabinets of Doctor Arcana to have a very retro look and feel within a simple framework with minimal mouse controls. The end result is an effectively moody and entertaining game that evokes a haunting sense of nostalgia.

The concept for the game began as a feature I created for Dark Realms magazine back in 2000. The feature was called The Cabinet of Doctor Arcana, based on the title of the classic silent horror film The Cabinet of Doctor Caligari. In each issue, the condescending Doctor Arcana presented puzzles for the readers to ponder, then insulted the integrity of anyone who correctly solved them. This jeering humor carries over into the game as well. Players are subjected to taunting remarks from Doctor Arcana throughout their adventure and lost souls who consult the in-game walkthrough, aptly named The Cheater's Compendium, will be scolded and ridiculed for doing so.

I developed the Doctor Arcana idea further on the Nox Arcana album, Theater of Illusion. The story centered around a secret society of magicians who possess actual magical powers and lurk in the hidden shadows of our world. I've always loved magic and magicians—the darker and creepier, the better. The concept seemed like a natural backdrop for an eerie adventure shrouded in mystery. In the game, players must explore this shadowy realm of magic and illusion and resolve a variety of devious puzzles to unlock Doctor Arcana's darkest secrets. The gauntlet of confounding conundrums consists of more than 50 logic puzzles, word puzzles, mazes, riddles and codes. For those seeking something more mentally stimulating than the usual arcade game or hidden object adventure, this is the game for you.

Do you know if this is point and click

Steam lists keyboard and mouse as requirements to play the game. The nature of the game suggests it is point and click.

There definitely seems to be a mouse cursor during the puzzles, suggesting point-and-click.

Very nice-looking puzzles.

Interesting how your cursor changes shape when you mouse around the https://www.doctorarcana.com website.

Hopefully it will be available somewhere other than Steam.

I am about an hour in and to me the game is closer to a Casual than Adventure but I can see if others would disagree. A big issue is that the game play area is in a 4:3 ratio as if it was originally made for the old monitor aspects. So far its just puzzles and I find them mostly on the easier side with a few that are harder and some types repeating. I haven't come across any that are what you would call Adventure puzzles, more like board game types that you would have found in The 7th Guest. The game is all mouse driven for those curious. I will hold judgement until I have played more to tell if the game is worth $15.

That sounds exactly like I was expecting, Greyfuss. Per the description that it was inspired by the 7th Guest, I was hoping that is what it would be like.

I have come across several quite challenging game/puzzles. The game does save upon exit and, a nice feature, it will save your progress within a puzzle/game so this will be something you can play at any time like on a Lunch or Coffee break without worrying about losing your place or not playing at all because you don't have enough time.

That makes it not like casual games (which generally have puzzles that are too easy) and more like games such as 7th Guest and Jewels of the Oracle.

Currently playing - the puzzles are not especially easy, but still it feels more like a casual game.

Thanks Greyfuss and Iurii for your observations! I will consider it to be a puzzle adventure like 7th Guest and leave it here. It's difficult to categorize them all.

So far I like it, but it seems most of the puzzles to get inside the door are exactly the same, which gets boring after awhile. So I take lots of breaks.

I usually like puzzle games as a way to spend some time when I don't feel like playing a full adventure. Much like a casual game. I like that it will save your progress within a puzzle (according to GreyFuss).

Thanks so much,
