Tomb Raider One & Two

Tomb Raider One & Two - 12/21/13 11:52 AM

I have a question about the original TR games. I have them on disks and I noticed that in Stella's walk thru she mentions - "if you are playing on a Mac" - does this mean I might be able to play them on my new iMac? If so will I need special software to make them work?

Unless you have a PC emulator on your iMac, you need a Mac version of TR I & II to play them on a Mac. Once upon a time I owned the TR II Mac version, but it left along with the Mac one country and two homes ago!

Thanks Gremlin and L4L. I don't know if I have a "PC emulator" on my iMac. I'll see if I can find out more info on that. wave12

The original Tomb Raider 1, 2, and 3 were made for Mac OS 8.6 and earlier.
They were never made for OS X.

For the Mac OS 8.6 and earlier versions -
Rosetta was supported by OS X up through Mac Snow Leopard (OS 10.6), but not on Lion (OS 10.7) or Mountain Lion (OS 10.8). So unless you have Mac Snow Leopard (OS 10.6) or earlier, you can't use Rosetta to run the original Mac versions of Tomb Raider.

If you want to know more about Rosetta, it was created so people could run their older software (made for OS 9 and earlier) on Macs with OS X. So it could be used with old games.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rosetta_%28software%29

Note that Stella's walkthrough for the early games was written many years ago, around when the games were first released. At that time all Macs could still play games made from the old OS 8.6 and earlier.

For the PC versions,
You may be able to run the first Tomb Raider in DOSBox, since the original was DOS-based. Tomb Raider 2 and 3 are Windows-based though, and would require a virtual machine with Windows inside to run.

If you have Lion or Mountain Lion, you are better off running the Windows versions because Rosetta is no longer supported. Programs like VMware Fusion, VirtualBox, or Parallels can be used to run Windows on modern Macs. But you will need a version of Windows to install on the Virtual Machine they create.

Recent Tomb Raiders have been made with Mac versions. But just as with a PC, you need to make sure your video card meets the system requirements.

I'm still hoping that GOG will eventually update the early Tomb Raiders for modern Macs.

Thanks Jenny100 and l4l. My iMac actually is 10.9 version so I will continue to play the old ones in DOS on my old XP computer. It would be great if GOG updated them for my iMac. Thanks again. wave12

If you want to play the original TR games, they're all on Steam, and work just fine with modern PCs.

But not modern Macs.
GOG has versions for PC too, as do other download sites.
But none of those sites has downloads that work on modern Macs without some kind of emulator.

Actually Tomb Raider II seems to have been released on the Mac App Store, but none of the other early Tomb Raiders.

I did see it at the Apple Store to Jenny. I'm sure sooner or later they will be available for the newer apple computers. There are 2 TR games listed.

Even better, today they're on sale as a bundle for GBP 8.99 (about $14.50) for the first 10 games, and 2013 for GBP 5.99 (about $10).

p.s. giving prices on here is the only time my US keyboard bugs me! (but it was the only way I could afford a Microsoft ergonomic keyboard when I bought it)

Yes there are Tomb Raider II ($7.99) and Tomb Raider Underworld ($19.99) at the App Store.

Tomb Raider II for OSX 10.6.6 or later.
Tomb Raider Underworld for OSX 10.6.8 or later.

But Underworld isn't one of the old series.

I'm guessing they'll have Tomb Raider III through V before they have Tomb Raider I, since TRII through V are Windows-based and TRI is DOS-based. TRII through V could probably use the same wrapper, but TRI would probably need a different type of wrapper.
