elder scrolls 5 - 04/15/18 11:05 PM

After the disasterious attempt with nwn2. I decided to revisit elder scrolls 5 ( I did the quick version last time) I am doing the quest "missing in action" and I have traveled quite a way to rescue a member of a family, only when I reach him he turns on me and tries to kill me, If I kill him
I get a quest failed message, what have I done wrong

See if this helps.

Hi Merrick, can you let us know if you are playing the Special Edition or original version of Skyrim, if any expansions or mods are active and what level you're at?

Apparently, you've somehow triggered Thorald's agro (aggression/trouble) levels and he doesn't like you very much. This could be caused by earlier quests and your current alliance. If you are allied with the Imperials and have actively killed Storm Cloaks or attacked any member of the Grey-Mane family, that might do it. I also know that particular quest can be very challenging at the lower levels, is it possible that you hit him with a spell or weapon strike during the attempt to free him? That might do it as well.

If none of the above, you might want to go back to an earlier save and try it again when you've leveled some to see if that has an effect.

Re: elder scrolls 5 - 04/16/18 06:19 PM

Im playing Elder scrolls 5 legendary edition, I tried about 5 differant ways of going into tht room and each time the guy who I was rescuing attacked me, so going back to my save I looked at my journal
and I had allready failed the quest ( getting prisoner out was in red) I had to go back to before I
killed the outside guards before the fail, and I couldnt see a peacfull way of doing this quest, so I
found a cheat for completing the quest and ended it

Re: elder scrolls 5 - 04/16/18 06:48 PM

The only way to end the quest without any combat requires your character to have a pretty high Speechcraft score. That allows you to talk the Altmer guard captain into releasing Thorald. I've done that solution a few times, but only after I was at a higher level. The rest of the time I fought my way through the guards and was able to release Thorald, but had to kill pretty much every guard in the place. If neither of those opportunities presented themselves, then it might be a glitch inherent to the Legendary edition.

If you haven't done it already, the Nexus offers an all encompassing patch for the Legendary Edition here: https://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/71214/

It's installed like other mods using the Nexus Mod Manager found here: https://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/modmanager/

If you haven't used it before and are concerned about their terming it an "Open Beta" don't worry. It's been in use for years, they just update it pretty much continually. There's some wiki hints around the NMM, mod and patch loading here https://wiki.nexusmods.com/index.php/Installing_Nexus_Mod_Manager and here https://wiki.nexusmods.com/index.php/Installing_Mods_Using_NMM plus Gopher, a YouTuber has some great tutorials here: https://www.youtube.com/user/GophersVids

Re: elder scrolls 5 - 04/16/18 08:38 PM

Oh, man! I remember this quest! It was one of the first ones I did way back when. It took me forever to find the place. I kept getting lost in snow storms and mountain passes. I'm terrible at directions anyway, and the map was pretty much useless for me. I was so afraid the guy was going to be dead before I got there! When I finally arrived, I had to fight my way through. I was able to complete the mission, but on my second (current) play through I've avoided this quest. It was too traumatic! crazy

After doing the quest, I installed mods to help clear clouds from the map and reveal more roads and terrain detail. Now I can navigate Skyrim without too many problems. I've also learned that I can't just take shortcuts through mountains either. lol But I'll never forget those frantic hours wandering around in the blizzards of Skyrim worried that I'd be too late to rescue that poor man!

Re: elder scrolls 5 - 04/16/18 11:39 PM

I remember the first time I hit the quest. My character was at a fairly low level and while I made it through against the guards, I lost count how many times that Thalmer Justicair at the end killed my character. That's what sold me on poison arrows and a high sneak skill evil

I seem to have never triggered this quest somehow. Currently playing Skyrim SE, still having a blast. Doing a no-training game for a change of pace. Level 24 and absolutely nowhere in the game but "bleep", it's fun. Wonderful, mindless fun.

Re: elder scrolls 5 - 04/18/18 02:22 AM

If you talk to Fralia Gray-Mane at her Jewelry stall in Whiterun, after Olfrid Battle-Born berates her for believing that her son is still alive, she'll ask you to meet her at their house and you'll get the quest there. If you choose the combat path, you'll have more Altmer or Glass armor and weapons than you'll know what to do with dependent on what level you finish it. thumbsup

I agree, it is fun. I just recently reloaded it after not playing for quite sometime. Took me awhile to get all my mods reloaded, now I have to find time to play. Spending way too much time commuting now-a-days. I want to break the 6000 hour mark, there's got to be a record in there somewhere. grin

Re: elder scrolls 5 - 04/18/18 04:00 AM

When I need to rest my brain I return to old favourites and the big open world games are perfect. Not much thinking required.

Somehow I ended up level 27 with almost nothing to show for it. I spent far too much coin building a lovely house and then one of my rotten kids complained that it was too scary because there were monsters in the swamp below. Maybe I'll move her to that little shack in Whiterun, see how she likes it there.

Somewhere there is a mod that allows you to turn dragon souls into skill points since apart form Foos Roh Dah and a couple of others I don't find the shouts too useful. I used it last time I played and ended up with mega-skills. Maybe it also works with the SE version.

hagatha, here's a link to a mod that converts dragon souls to perks. It's made specifically for SE. I haven't tried it myself, but it might be what you're looking for.

Thanks for that link. The other mod I used was a pillar, but this one looks to be just as useful.

This one is SE compatible and I believe works similar to the one I've used in the past: https://www.nexusmods.com/skyrimspecialedition/mods/1955

It lets you configure how many souls it costs per perk point.

Here's the non-SE version I currently use: https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=13544

Hm. I'm currently running a couple of mods from the Steam community (the Unofficial patch and the Inigo follower mod, both of which are excellent. I have had no issues so far with these, but I did have a bad moment with another mod. Can I use these with Nexus mods?

Sure, just read the notes on the mod in the Nexus, most of the developers who are worth their salt will tell you if a mod conflicts with another type of, or specific mod.

Okay then. That settles it.

Incidentally, the Inigo mod is very good. He's a half-Khajit follower, well-acted and very useful in tough situations. What I like best is that he interacts with other NPCs. I just overheard him having a conversation with one my my children about becoming an adventurer (I don't coddle my kids with dollies and pretty dresses. They get sharpened daggers and spend much of their days working on their technique. This is Skyrim, not suburban Vancouver;) ).

While I do hit glitches now and again (been working through the "Grey Face Bug" most of the weekend) I run over 80 mods off the Nexus and about 8 through the Steam workshop. At one high point I had something like 115 off the Nexus including a complete Skyrim overhaul, plus another 10 or more off the workshop and was running fine until Bethesda came out with the Special Edition and every one started gearing mods for that version. I'm still running the standard version, not all the mods I like have been adjusted for SE yet.

Re: elder scrolls 5 - 04/22/18 05:24 AM

I've got five mods now, including the Unofficial Patch, Inigo, The Stones of Barenziah location mod (because really, 24 of them?), one that inserts a major quest into the mix (can't remember what it's called), and my cheating mod for skill points. Silly, because once you have a character with 100 in Sneak, 100 in Archery, and the Skeleton Key and a good bow, you really don't need much else. But it's fun to craft armour and enchantments and there's nothing like a good poison to set your day right. I just like making stuff, I guess.

The one thing I've noticed about the Se version is that it seems more stable, or maybe that's the effect of the Unofficial Patch. I'm having far fewer CTD's that I did in vanilla Skyrim.

Oh, and with regards to the OP in this thread, I haven't been able to free what's his face from the fort yet. Still working on it.

Re: elder scrolls 5 - 04/23/18 02:53 AM

Gah! I spent a better part of the day trying to rid skyrim's female elf population of the "mark of the beast" lol Occasionally, when using face texture changing mods, a conflict arises between the stock face textures and the new ones. You end up with either a number of grey headed people or elves with a red or grey forehead with a strangely muted stylized star tattoo right smack in the middle; thus the mark of the beast to which I was referring. Ended up having to uninstall all things Skyrim, including manually deleting any and all left over files, the reloading all my mods making sure to get the most updated version, all 90+ of them. It's worth it though from my perspective. I've played the game so much, that I need to have a ton of new content to make it more interesting.

As for followers, if you don't mind a rather bawdy female companion, Sofia, the funny fully voiced follower can be pretty entertaining. Just don't put any mead or ale in her inventory, she has no self control. lol That said, the mod is very well done and with the work the developer did on her AI, she's pretty darn good in combat, almost over-powered due to her stats.

The Stones of Barenziah map markers are a necessity as far as I'm concerned. Apparently, the reason the didn't include then in the original quest was because some locations can spoil other quests. I never finished the quest until I got the map marker mod, so worth a few spoilers to me. thumbsup

Re: elder scrolls 5 - 04/23/18 04:16 AM

I'll try Sofia next.

Inigo is almost essential, and has a LOT of conversation related to what you're actually doing at the time. Much more companionable than Lydia or any of the other stock followers and he is a dynamite fighter as well. Highly recommended.

EDIT: I just finished The Forgotten City mod. If you haven't played it, it's amazing, well worth the time. It's a full story, very immersive, with original music and very good acting. Ran flawlessly, too. It's a ten out of ten.

Wow, thanks for mentioning that Forgotten City mod - I've never tried that, so it's on my list! thumbsup

Re: elder scrolls 5 - 05/15/18 05:47 AM

It'a amazing.

And if you haven't had Inigo as a companion, try him. He has dialogue for most occasions and can even ride his own horse (and he has a sing for that, too). Good fighter.

I've decided that this game of Skyrim will just stay on my computer for when I need a Skyrim hit. I'm at level 59, ready to start using magic exclusively since I'm at 100 in all my main combat skills.

Re: elder scrolls 5 - 05/23/18 02:31 PM

Hey, I noticed that the maker of Forgotten City is a legit developer, no surprise really, considering the mod, AKA expansion's content is so amazing.

So, they're an indie dev house out of Australia under the name Modern Storyteller. According to their website, they are working on a new game using the Unreal Graphics engine. I'm assuming that they have some backing since that engine has produced some triple A titles. Apparently, they will be announcing the new game in early June at E3. I'll post anything else that I find out about it.

When I contacted the fellow who wrote the Forgotten City mod to let him know how much I liked it, he told me about the upcoming game. Could be good!
