Hero U: Rogue to Redemption Now on GOG (from the designers of Quest for Glory) - 07/10/18 01:01 AM

For those of you who played and loved the Quest for Glory games from Sierra, the Coles's new game, Hero U: Rogue to Redemption, was released on GOG a few hours ago. This game has been in the works for many years, and it is great to see it released at last.

You can check it out here.

Thanks, Marian grin

I got my "backer's email" - with a download link - today.

[I was asked a day or two ago as to whether I wanted Steam or GOG - although the link I was actually sent today takes me to a "backerkit" address.]

So hoping it's for the DRM Free version !! wink

I think this game looks good and I like this sentence I saw in the description: "Most combat is optional for those who prefer a pure adventure game"

I'll have to keep an eye it and what players say about it.

Re: Hero U: Rogue to Redemption Now on GOG (from the designers of Quest for Glory) - 07/10/18 06:42 PM

Yes, I think it's possible to get through the game with very little combat - which made me wonder if this game could be included as part of Adventure Game Discussions. I wasn't sure, though, so I started a Darkside thread.

I hope your game is DRM-free, Mad. Looking forward to hearing what you think of the game!

I'm quite excited about this release. I loved the Quest for Glory games. I have also met and talked to Lori Cole before, because she and her husband live in the same area that I do, so it's fun times. happydance

I found PDF manuals and stuff, Marian, but no "GOG" game key. Apparently that hasn't been sent to me .... yet smile

Thanks Marian! wave

Sounds like an action-adventure game with a puzzle solving story mode, fits in with the Darkside stuff. grin

Now, I just wish that game makers would understand that linear skill leveling, turn based combat and a fantasy theme does not an RPG make. *sigh* I'll jump off my soap box now...head first lol

Re: Hero U: Rogue to Redemption Now on GOG (from the designers of Quest for Glory) - 07/11/18 01:42 AM

I really think this game is more of an adventure game than anything else, but the small part of it that isn't compelled me to put it in the Darkside forum. Time will tell what genre most players consider it to be. wave

Thanks for letting me know, Mad. I didn't know about the patch, but that's not surprising that there is going to be one. It seems like a lot of folks are playing it on Steam without problems, but not a bad idea to wait for the tweaks and improvements. smile

Re: Hero U: Rogue to Redemption Now on GOG (from the designers of Quest for Glory) - 07/11/18 08:39 PM

According to the patch info, there is a "game stopping" bug that needs to be rectified - so maybe the folks already playing the game haven't encountered it yet whistle

Re: Hero U: Rogue to Redemption Now on GOG (from the designers of Quest for Glory) - 07/11/18 08:42 PM

Well, I do know that the game has many paths to the end - and some people have played through the whole game without coming across that - so apparently it is something that not everyone will encounter due to having taken a different path - but nevertheless I am very glad to know about it and I hope they can get it patched ASAP. Thanks for keeping us posted. wave

Re: Hero U: Rogue to Redemption Now on GOG (from the designers of Quest for Glory) - 07/11/18 09:04 PM

I just found this on their Kickstarter update:

Quote:
There are some errors in the game books, a few dialogues and game events that could use tweaking, and at least one known "game-locking" bug.

(If you see a plaque labeled "Pyoter," it's best not to click on it. There was a bad line of code that freezes the game.) We will also keep a close eye on player reports and feedback over the next few months.

I think what they mean by "game-locking" is that the game freezes up. If so, that's not fun, but it's nowhere near as bad as "game-stopping." wave

Re: Hero U: Rogue to Redemption Now on GOG (from the designers of Quest for Glory) - 07/11/18 11:13 PM

I just read that there is a possible achievement in the game to get through the whole thing without killing anyone, so it seems that the combat doesn't really have to be a component of the game unless you choose to make it such.
Posted By: Mad

Re: Hero U: Rogue to Redemption Now on GOG (from the designers of Quest for Glory) - 07/12/18 03:39 AM

Oh .... I translated "game locking" as "stopping play".
Is that not the case, then ?? headscratch

But being able to complete the game "without using combat" might attract more buyers yes

Re: Hero U: Rogue to Redemption Now on GOG (from the designers of Quest for Glory) - 07/12/18 07:02 PM

Game locking means that the screen locks up/freezes, but I can see why you interpreted it the way that you did. Most designers don't bother to mention such problems, at least not that I recall.

I remember my outrage when I came across actual combat in one of the old Quest For Glory games! What??? Fighting??? But ultimately it was those very minor encounters that allowed me to feel safe buying my first RPG, which was Baldur's Gate.

It's nice to see these old game styles being recreated.

Re: Hero U: Rogue to Redemption Now on GOG (from the designers of Quest for Glory) - 07/15/18 03:09 AM

Great game indeed - already finished my first playthrough.
But why 'The Darkside'? It is not an action-adventure game: you can even complete it without any combat.
And the battles are turn-based anyway, like in 'Quest for Glory', so I would rather call it a pure adventure game smile

Re: Hero U: Rogue to Redemption Now on GOG (from the designers of Quest for Glory) - 07/15/18 03:31 AM

Iurii, in the past we always put the previous Quest for Glory games in the Darkside forum, and that's why when this game was released I put it here. It does indeed sound like Adventure Game Discussions would also be an appropriate forum for the game.

Re: Hero U: Rogue to Redemption Now on GOG (from the designers of Quest for Glory) - 07/15/18 05:01 AM

Generally, a game that contains combat in any form, even if it is optional, is usually directed here to the Darkside forum - That includes games with turn-based battle. Many classic RPG's are defined by that style of play. There are also "Darkside" style games that contain a Story Mode, allowing an individual to take part in the game, but avoid combat.

Personally, I would simply term games that fall out of the usual classifications as hybrids. In recent years there have been departures from what would be considered "pure" game genres and the foundational game definitions (yes, they did exist) are becoming less adhered to.

Adventure gamers are more than welcome to discuss those hybrid games here, we don't bite. Well, maybe just a little. evil

Thanks, Trail. That is pretty much what I was thinking when I put the game here on the Darkside.

I just hope that those who only play adventure games will learn of this game, too. smile

Hi Marian smile

I followed the path you have given, thank you, and DID get to a notice about the patch and what it fixes - but can't find anything to click on that will let me download it woozy

I don't use Galaxy and am wondering if that could be the reason ??
Posted By: Marian

Re: Hero U: Rogue to Redemption Now on GOG (from the designers of Quest for Glory) - 08/06/18 01:15 AM

I use Galaxy exclusively and there's a box that you check that automatically updates the game with any patches needed.

Having said that, I would think that if you are not using Galaxy that the game download would include the patch, being as you don't see it as a separate download.
Posted By: Mad

Re: Hero U: Rogue to Redemption Now on GOG (from the designers of Quest for Glory) - 08/06/18 01:39 AM

There is no indication as to whether the version being displayed by GOG for download - NOT via Galaxy - includes the patch or not and I obviously need to know that lol

If I use Galaxy, am I able to download both game and patch files without them auto installing ??

[The reason I normally just download the files by browser is so that they go direct to my "Downloads Folder" and stay there until I want to install them.]

If you think this needs to go to the Bugs & Patches Board, please move it and I will follow laugh

Thanks.

Mad smile

Re: Hero U: Rogue to Redemption Now on GOG (from the designers of Quest for Glory) - 08/06/18 02:16 AM

There might be a new version number after having downloaded the game from GOG, but of course I don't know that for sure. And you would need to know the original version number, of course.

If you download the game through Galaxy, it will install the game with the patch automatically. Maybe there is a way to keep it from auto-installing, but since I have never done that I am not sure.

Re: Hero U: Rogue to Redemption Now on GOG (from the designers of Quest for Glory) - 08/26/18 05:22 PM

Corey and Lori Cole would like to make several sequels to this game. Doing that will all depend on how well this game does financially. I read that in the next game they would like to have a female mage as the main character.

I have the game and was able to play for about four hours and then haven't gotten back to it, as I've been too busy. What I did play, I enjoyed. At this point, though, I will probably start over from the beginning when I have the time to play it, now that I have more of a feel for it. smile

[I will keep my fingers crossed then that Hero U does well for them.]

I've already re-started the game !!
But I quite often re-start RPG's after getting to know better how to "do" things from a preliminary play....

Well I hope you can manage to get back to it at some time, Marian grin

Re: Hero U: Rogue to Redemption Now on GOG (from the designers of Quest for Glory) - 09/02/18 09:34 PM

I'm really surprised that there haven't been more posts here at Gameboomers with regards to "Hero U".
For me, it's a wonderful "modernised graphically" but definitely authentic Quest for Glory game and much credit is certainly due to the developers praise

I think I must be getting fairly close to the end by now (I play veeery slowly lol) and I know I'll be sorely tempted to immediately play it again !!
But I must resist and get back to Blade Runner because IT has been ignored .... despite being one of my great favourites shocked]

EDIT :
Or maybe I'm not as close to the end as I thought .... I've just unlocked yet another new area !! joy

Re: Hero U: Rogue to Redemption Now on GOG (from the designers of Quest for Glory) - 09/02/18 10:37 PM

I think it's probably not getting much attention here because we are not categorizing it as an adventure game (which is a shame, because that's really what it is. Unfortunately if a game has any combat in it, even optional combat, it gets relegated to the Darkside).

I am so glad to hear that you are enjoying it so much. That also bodes very well for when I play it. I did like the part that I played and am so glad that the enjoyment continues.

I think the developers tried very hard to conform to the spirit of Quest for Glory as much as possible. yes

Re: Hero U: Rogue to Redemption Now on GOG (from the designers of Quest for Glory) - 09/02/18 11:13 PM

I don't really know how the game could be played without any combat, Marian.
It IS very simple combat but of course, even so, it won't be to everyone's taste.
I just can't see how certain quests could be completed without it so I'd be interested to be told yes
Posted By: Marian

Re: Hero U: Rogue to Redemption Now on GOG (from the designers of Quest for Glory) - 09/02/18 11:21 PM

The no-combat is something I read about when the game was in beta testing; someone said that most enemies you can sneak past. I also thought I remembered reading that one of the beta testers got through the entire game without combat. I don't remember where I read that now, though, so would have to look for it. If I find it again, I will let you know.

Maybe this is where I got the idea; this is from their Kickstarter page:

Quote:
In fact, there’s a Steam Achievement waiting for everyone who completes the game without killing any monsters. That will be one of the most challenging of the game’s achievements.

Anyway, if I can find info that states you can positively get through the game with zero combat, I will let you know. smile

There's a thread here where the developer talks about the possibility of no combat, among other things.

And I guess this would be the "last word" on the subject for now - I found this in the game description on the Steam page:

Quote:
Most combat is optional for those who prefer a pure adventure game, but there are ample rewards for those who choose to valorously fight the creatures that threaten the school and all of Sardonia.

There seems to be a sudden and unexplained reduction in my bank account. It just happens to be an amount very close, identical in fact to the sum required for this game and the Quest for Glory 1-5 package. I'm not saying it's anyone's fault here for talking about how great the games are, but I'm not, not saying it either...wait, that's not quite right, or is not, not quite right? crazy
