elder scrolls 5

I am doing a quest "retrieve arvaks skull" and I am about three quarters through the game including
the dlcs. this quest is accessed through a portal into the soul cairn and so it says to get there I need to be a vampire except I am not, which means I cant do this quest?. Is this right?. I have been wandering around this castle for quite a while and I cant find no portal

I moved your post over to the Darkside as this appears to be a gameplay question rather than a technical problem.

As a part of the Dawnguard questline, you have an option to be soultrapped by Serana, allowing you to enter for the first time. This is not available after you leave upon the quest completion. To enter again, you must become a Vampire Lord.

Marian has it right. At the start of the quest, when you are at the portal with Serana she will explain that in order to be granted access through the portal you have to be undead i.e. a vampire. If you protest, the other option is that a portion of your soul will be trapped by Serana in a Soul Gem. This will reduce your overall stats. If you are a higher level player with a good amount of enchanted gear, the second option isn't that big of a deal. Once the quest is done, your soul is made whole again and your stats return to normal.

Also, as an FYI there is a cure for Vampirism that can be obtained (starts another quest) through Falion the wizard located in Morthal.
