COC on Steam

Quote:
Plunge into Cyanide Studio’s Call of Cthulhu, the official Cthulhu videogame inspired by Chaosium’s classic pen and paper RPG. Uncover the chilling mysteries of this RPG-investigation game, descending deep into a world of cosmic horrors, creeping madness, and shrouded Old Gods within Lovecraft’s iconic universe.

The Cthulhu Mythos has been fascinating audiences for generations, growing to become one of the largest shared universes ever envisioned and giving birth to countless stories, novels, movies, tabletop and videogames since the original publication of H.P. Lovecraft’s The Call of Cthulhu. Adaptions and references have formed a widespread legacy stretching back to the very beginning of the 20th century, latching on to the key fear of the human psyche: that of the unknown. Now, Call of Cthulhu will bring the mythos to life like never before, on PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC.

In this world, nothing is as it seems. Sanity is an irregular bedfellow, all too often replaced by the whisperings in the dark. Strange creatures, weird science, and shadowy cults dominate the Cthulhu Mythos, intent on realizing their mad schemes to bring about the end of everything.

Your mind will suffer - balancing a razor-thin line between sanity and madness, your senses will be disrupted until you question the reality of everything around you. Trust no one. Creeping shadows hide lurking figures… and all the while, the Great Dreamer prepares for his awakening.

1924. Private Investigator Edward Pierce is sent to investigate the tragic death of the Hawkins family in their imposing mansion on the isolated Darkwater Island, off the shores of Boston. Between unfriendly locals and dubious police reports, it becomes clear there’s more to the case than meets the eye. Soon enough, Pierce is plunged into a terrifying world of conspiracies, cultists, and cosmic horrors.

Hidden passageways, nightmarish asylums, illegal bars, and seemingly-abandoned warehouses make up Darkwater’s scattered geography. Originally supported by a now long-dead whaling industry, the island is home to only desperate old sailors and decaying families of old money with nowhere else to go. They do not like outsiders.

Faced with terrors beyond human comprehension, you must delve deep into the secrets that lay beneath the surface of the Darkwater Island community. Speak with the island’s inhabitants, overcome deadly horrors and discover cryptic clues, in a desperate attempt to expose the terrible truth at the heart of the Hawkins case.

Thanks revco, this looks intriguing. I've never played the pen and paper version. I'm interested to see how they integrate RPG player development into this type of story line.

I wonder if H. P. Lovecraft had any idea how much of a stir he would create by bringing Cthulu to life in so many reader's minds?

I wonder how it will compare (in terms of scariness) to the 2005 COC? That was the first game that actually scared the living daylights out of me.

Oh I can't wait to play this! I love H.P. Lovecraft's stories, and can't wait to see if this game "feels" like the worlds he created!

PS Does anyone know if you can buy the game on cd or DVD? The picture of the game says DVD on it, but when I go to buy the game the only options are digital ones.

Thanks!

I think it's digital only. If there is anything that looks like a retail box, it probably just comes with a Steam key.

The Call of Cthulhu - 12/21/18 05:03 AM

Is anyone playing this game right now or played it recently? It is on sale on Steam and I was hoping to get some input about it. It also states this game needs an internet connection - is that only to download the game or while playing as well? Also the full game The Council is on sale and it looks like it may be a good adventure game. Also needs an internet connection. Any input appreciated. Thank you.

It's a DarkSide game, Linda so I will move you to the discussion thread there!

Hi Linda, the internet connection required on a Steam game is a form of Copy Protection. When DVD's are available and purchased from the retailer with a Steam requirement, only a portion of the game is actually on the disks. The rest requires downloading from Steam. If purely digital, then the entire game is downloaded. Usually in both cases, the games are also maintained (patches, fixes and such) automatically through Steam.

From what I gather, The Council is an Aventure/RPG hybrid. The narrative and general game play is Adventure style, but there is an RPG style character development tree and leveling system.

There's a gameplay video located here that might give you a better idea of how the game runs.

Me too. I've just started chapter 4 so a long way to go though.

Re: The Call of Cthulhu - 10/12/19 11:11 AM

Just to add regarding the comparisons with the Council, having played both, I agree that this game is a very similar Adventure/RPG hybrid. This could have as easily been included in the more general adventure game section.

That is good to know, teassoc. wave
