E-reader -- help!

E-reader -- help! - 05/13/13 07:24 AM

wave Hey, gang! I'm interested in
buying an e-reader! Can you help
me?

I'm looking for one with..

1. A touchscreen;
2. A screen no larger than
6 inches, if possible;
3. A backlight for night
reading;
4. One that I can play games
on (maybe adventure games?);
5. One that would fit in my
purse.

I know there are tablets out there
with larger screens, but I'd really
like one that I can easily carry
around.

The brand name and price wouldn't
matter; and if it has more features
than what I need, it would be okay,
as long as it has what I want.

So, what do you think? Is there such
an e-reader?

I would really appreciate your help,
guys! Thanks alot!

Amazon now have a whole range of Kindles in a whole range of sizes, but you can of course have the Kindle app on just about any device, including the iPad.

The problem with all these devices is that gaming possibilities are very different from those on a PC or laptop. Other than that, from everything I have heard (and bearing in mind how much my wife loves her full size iPad), how about the iPad Mini?

I have the original Kindle and still think that takes a lot of beating as a pure e-reader, but it would be a struggle to play games on it and the screen is only black and white. Some of the newer ones are really tablets, and even the more basic one has a reading light option.

I hope these comments help. smile

Kindle has a e-reader white and you can read it out in sunlight. I have one like Lex's and I also have the Kindle Fire which is lit and can play any games and has internet access etc. like a little tablet. I take it everywhere.

If you want to play games the most versatile will be an Ipad mini but the size is 7.9 inches.

You can do all the things you list on the original Kindle Fire, though the screen may be a bit bigger than 6 inches. Son reads on his all the time. I find it a bit heavy to read on but son and both g'daughters use theirs all the time. luck

I use my Nook all the time. I also read books on the PC with the Nook app and Kindle app.

The nook has all your requirements but as stated - it really is not good for games.

I have had both sizes of Kindle Fire and an original Nook that's only an E reader, but is good outside in the sun. Neither of my Kindles can be used very well outside. I agree, the games you can play on the tablets bear no resemblance to the games you can play on a computer or game console. They're fun, but basic and just different. My Nook isn't touch screen, but both Kindles are. The Kindle line has a Paper-White screen that's easy to read anywhere, and some are quite small though they're black and white only. You can get both the Kindle and Nook reader apps for your smart phone too.
Good luck!

PS: A friend has the iPad mini, and loves it. I thought they were too expensive.

The Google Nexus is another choice that gives you a ton of options. For gaming you need to consider the operating system and the apps available. If you're wanting to play conventional adventure games, you'll need to have a Windows based OS. Although a lot of games are being ported to Android and the IPad, they are limited.

I have a Kindle Fire and absolutely love it for internet use and reading. I have a few simple gaming apps, but that's about it.

You probably won't find anything with a 6 inch form factor. They are either 7 inches or 10.9 inches. The Kindle Fire HD also has an 8.9 inch tablet.
