It's been probably 30 years since I made shepherds pie and the ingredients I use are hamburger, mashed potatoes, green beans and mushroom soup. Problem is I don't remember how I layered it.
I am under the impression from what I have seen is that the meat is on the bottom, veggies in the center and potatoes on the top. I have never made it myself though.
I hope it comes out yummy!

In the Province of Québec, many will put indian corn as the veggie.
I like it with cremed indian corn. It makes it less dry.
And of course, you make some lines on the potatoes with your fork before you put it in the oven. I little bit of art.
But it does not matter much as I mix everything with ketchup before eating it.
The best part comes when you eat what is left over after mixing it in the frying pan.

Shephards pie for me (here in the UK) is minced lamb (the shepherd connection ;)) with onion gravy for the base - and a topping of mashed potato.
And when the dish is very nearly fully cooked, I always grate some cheese on the top and then put it back in the ovem for 15 minutes

I also use corn in my pie. When I cook the hamburger,I put a tablespoon or two of dried onion and garlic soup in it for taste plus fresh ground pepper and sea salt to taste. Sometimes I also put garlic powder in the potatoes when I mash them.
All the variations sound delicious!

By way of further clarification of British culinary practice (from a consumer rather than a chef!), the beef version would be Cottage Pie.
In either event, some vegetables might be mixed in with the meat under a mashed potato topping (preferably finally crisped under the grill) but some/most of the vegetables would usually be served separately.
Leftovers reheated with hot salsa can be very tasty...

I've also made it with layered leftover Thanksgiving ingredients, including stuffing and cranberry sauce. Very tasty!

Yes !! I used to alternate - making both - as some liked beef and some liked lamb

Many good variations; had also found numerous versions on search.
I keep thinking what I did was put the hamburger on the bottom of a cassarol dish, added the mashed potatoes, then the green beans and topped with mushroom soup. Then bake in the oven.
Sorta, ya might find one in southern Idaho??? lol

That sounds like it should have a different title, possibly as some sort of "bake" rather than a pie, but very tempting nevertheless!

My mother made something she called Pot Pie. She rolled up hamburger into meatballs cooked it then took tomato soup, sauce and paste cooked it for a little while added potatoes, peas and sometimes corn and cooked it for a long time. The house would smell of "Pot Pie". When it had cooked to her satisfaction she would pour it into a baking dish or bowl then add thick strips of buiscut dough across the top. She would then bake it till the topping was done. It just tasted wonderful! It didn't matter how much she made it went very quickly!
If I could only cook like my mother...

Wife puts hamburger in the bottom of a casserole dish and mashed potatoes on top. I don't know if she puts any soup or such in besides, but it's baked in the oven. And I douse it with a good helping of Picante, and a bit of salt, before chowing down. Mmmm...

Here is a recipe I found from the Food Network
2 pounds potatoes, such as russet, peeled and cubed
2 tablespoons sour cream or softened cream cheese
1 large egg yolk
1/2 cup cream, for a lighter version substitute vegetable or chicken broth
Salt and freshly ground black pepper
1 tablespoon extra-virgin olive oil, 1 turn of the pan
1 3/4 pounds ground beef or ground lamb
1 carrot, peeled and chopped
1 onion, chopped
2 tablespoons butter
2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
1 cup beef stock or broth
2 teaspoons Worcestershire, eyeball it
1/2 cup frozen peas, a couple of handfuls
1 teaspoon sweet paprika
2 tablespoons chopped fresh parsley leaves
Boil potatoes in salted water until tender, about 12 minutes. Drain potatoes and pour them into a bowl. Combine sour cream, egg yolk and cream. Add the cream mixture into potatoes and mash until potatoes are almost smooth.
While potatoes boil, preheat a large skillet over medium high heat. Add oil to hot pan with beef or lamb. Season meat with salt and pepper. Brown and crumble meat for 3 or 4 minutes. If you are using lamb and the pan is fatty, spoon away some of the drippings. Add chopped carrot and onion to the meat. Cook veggies with meat 5 minutes, stirring frequently. In a second small skillet over medium heat cook butter and flour together 2 minutes. Whisk in broth and Worcestershire sauce. Thicken gravy 1 minute. Add gravy to meat and vegetables. Stir in peas.
Preheat broiler to high. Fill a small rectangular casserole with meat and vegetable mixture. Spoon potatoes over meat evenly. Top potatoes with paprika and broil 6 to 8 inches from the heat until potatoes are evenly browned. Top casserole dish with chopped parsley and serve.

I make Shepherd' Pie with hamburger and onions on the bottom, creamed corn in the middle and mashed potatoes peaked on the top. Yum!
